Quote:

"Death and war is not black and white. It is not like you think of it in your head, being a world covered in clouds and dark skies. It's much worse than that.

You die in sunlight. In bright skies and sunshine. You can be driving or sitting, completely minding your own self and die from a rocket, a bullet, or artillery. There is no music to accompany your coming doom. No warnings.

Urgent tasks remain unfinished. You just stop being. You die and become meat. Everything about you is gone. You are no longer yourself, you become meat rotten in the sun. It can happen anytime. No experience, weapons, or friends can save you sometimes. If you are going to die you are going to die.

No, it (war and dying) is not like cinema or books. The plot does not revolve around who you are. You just die like a letter on a page being turned and there is nothing you can do about it. But what we (the living) can do is remember. We can build monuments to these people who give their lives so hideously.

We can say we will remember the sunny days those men died. To so many of us a sunny day with birds in the sky will never be as it was before. It will never be peaceful again because we know death creeps in the shadows of the trees and in the ditches and in buildings.

All we can do for the guys who died so ugly in the sun is be cautious of the shadows and remember they did not pass and rot for no reason. Even dead dogs will feed the grass. No, these men did not die for no reason. Our children will remember that I'm sure."

I like knowing that this is happening, but I am a bit aghast they are making it public. It seems a bit self congratulatory

So they lost a ton of manual labor force and are importing Ukrainians in the most manual labor rich area of Ukraine. Lose 20,000 forces but now have 900k people you stole from Ukraine. This war is about resources and workers.

If our intelligence agencies are worth their weight in salt, they should have had a pretty good idea months ago that the Russian buildup was likely to turn into an invasion. If they briefed the President and congressional leaders as such, those leaders should have been making contingency plans that included how to sell Europe NG to give them another option other than Russian supplies.

Converting current maritime assets to NG transport ships or fastracking production of new NG transports should have been a priority. Maybe it was and they are working on it and we just don't know but if not, somebody needs their ass kicked between their ears.
I think the main barrier is offloading and storage facilities in Europe (particularly Germany), not the availability of transport capacity.
I'm no engineer, but I would think land based storage facilities would be fairly simple to design and build? Germans are known for their ingenuity, maybe they need to take some of their global warming brainpower and redirect it to NG storage problems so they freeze their butts off next winter.
Natural gas storage isn't like storing crude. An undergrad could design crude tanks but the spherical natural gas tanks are a bit more complex to design and manufacture.
Any salt domes over there to store natural gas in? As in Mt. Belvieu Tx. And several others nearby.
After looking around, they already do this so as noted before, storage isn't Germany's issue.

As OA said, it isn't NG storage that is lacking, it is the inability to offload and store LNG or turn it from LNG to NG to store in their existing facilities. Gas travels as LNG in ships and Germany can't turn LNG into NG fast enough to replace what they get from Russia.

U.S. intel helped Ukraine protect air defenses, shoot down Russian plane carrying hundreds of troops

Quote:

As Russia launched its invasion, the U.S. gave Ukrainian forces detailed intelligence about exactly when and where Russian missiles and bombs were intended to strike, prompting Ukraine to move air defenses and aircraft out of harm's way, current and former U.S. officials told NBC News.

That near real-time intelligence-sharing also paved the way for Ukraine to shoot down a Russian transport plane carrying hundreds of troops in the early days of the war, the officials say, helping repel a Russian assault on a key airport near Kyiv.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said, "We are regularly providing detailed, timely intelligence to the Ukrainians on the battlefield to help them defend their country against Russian aggression and will continue to do so."

Ukraine continues to move air defenses and aircraft nearly every day with the help of American intelligence, which is one reason Russia has not been able to establish air dominance. In some cases, Ukraine moved the targeted air defense systems or planes just in time, the officials said.
"The Russian military has literally been cratering empty fields where air defenses were once set up," one U.S. official said. "It has had an enormous impact on the Russian military's ability on the ground."

While U.S.-Ukrainian cooperation had been building since Russia seized Crimea in 2014, the Biden administration shifted into high gear in the weeks before the Russian invasion, when a U.S. military team visited to assess the state of Ukraine's air defenses. The Americans provided Ukraine with detailed advice about how to disperse their air defense systems, a move that U.S. officials say helped Ukraine prevent Russia from seizing control of the skies.

Ukrainian forces have used specific coordinates shared by the U.S. to direct fire on Russian positions and aircraft, current and former officials tell NBC News.

I imagine we currently doing the same in the Donbas region. Which explains why Ukrainian troops have repelled so Russian offensives while being severely outnumbered.

Update from Wali, the Canadian sniper from a couple days ago,

(using Facebook translation from French to English.)
Quote:

War in Ukraine...

Here's the image of a Ukrainian artillery shell exploding in front of a Russian soldier, who died today, according to all known knowledge.

This image well represents the violence of the projectiles that are fired on a modern battlefield. You can see what it looks like a wall of firecrackers. Every glow is a piece of metal as sharp as a well-sharpened knife. These bursts cut flesh, organs and bones. A few days ago, I saw these firecrackers passing by me like red lasers. Moments later, I realized that my comrades had just been killed.

A modern battlefield is a place where machines shoot at machines. Little humans in the middle of this metal storm most often try to just survive.

The war is ugly.

One interesting thing.

As former Soviet bloc / aligned nations send their Ukraine-compatible, Russian-origin weaponry to Ukraine, it is getting backfilled by Western equipment. This is jump starting or hastening a transition from being dependent on Russia for military equipment to being dependent on the US or Britain. Interesting trend.

Add it to the count:
Russia has:
Strengthened NATO's sense of purpose
Forced several more countries to join NATO
Forced Europe to invest heavily in alternatives to Russian energy
Weakened the eastern bloc alliance
Obliterated Russia's prestige and credibility
Decisively lost any sympathy that previously existed in Eastern Ukraine
Transitioning weapons sourcing in Eastern Europe from Russia to the US

Belarus achieving full independence is still on the clock
