Update from Wali, the Canadian sniper from a couple days ago,

(using Facebook translation from French to English.)
Quote:

War in Ukraine...

Here's the image of a Ukrainian artillery shell exploding in front of a Russian soldier, who died today, according to all known knowledge.

This image well represents the violence of the projectiles that are fired on a modern battlefield. You can see what it looks like a wall of firecrackers. Every glow is a piece of metal as sharp as a well-sharpened knife. These bursts cut flesh, organs and bones. A few days ago, I saw these firecrackers passing by me like red lasers. Moments later, I realized that my comrades had just been killed.

A modern battlefield is a place where machines shoot at machines. Little humans in the middle of this metal storm most often try to just survive.

The war is ugly.

Apparently we have brought in additional people into Moldova to support information sharing. I need to firm up details but I bet that gets dicey fast.

It still boggles my mind that two modern armies are hurling cruise missiles and heavy armor at each other in 2022. That being said, Slava Ukraini.

Ukraine was attacking strategic targets in Russia as early as February 25th! I don't remember hearing anything about this.

ETA: I found a post on page 40 in this thread about it, but there was so much else going on, it was a blip in all the info coming in.

I see this sentiment all the time and don't understand it. What the heck does the year have to do with it? Are you suggesting that you thought humans had evolved into something different in the last 100 years? Human nature doesn't change, and it won't. If we're still here then we'll have large scale warfare 100 years from now and 1000 years from now. There's nothing special about this year just because we're living in it.

Ok, I feel compelled to write this. This thread is what I read in the evening and again in the morning. As a former battery commander in Germany from 1985-1989, I have a keen interest in how this is going to turn out. I hope the Russians get everything that's coming to them. Things have not changed in 37 years.

They're probably sending your equipment to the front lines
That equipment was probably deemed obsolete 30 years ago…M109A2's.

I guess anytime there is incoming, do they scramble the jets so they aren't sitting targets? Simply too valuable an asset to lose it on the ground

Sounds like the US is sharing the Yamamoto playbook with Ukraine. As for moving artillery, I know that all countries want to use this tactic but the US has been very good at this for a long time. In the Mexican-American war US field artillery was significantly more mobile and provided a clear advantage. Then in WWI, I thought Truman was famous for getting through the war without taking counter battery fire, sometimes relocating in the nick of time.

WRT to the concept of "modern armies", I think that is relative. The Soviets - err, Russians, or at least Putin - still seem to be wedded to the concept of grinding down their enemy by sheer preponderance of force - Putin doesn't care how many Ukrainians or Russians he kills to meet his goals. The Ukrainians are at this point in the war fighting a high-level, high-intensity insurgency, and are being essentially reactive (with help from the West as noted). NATO countries would be much more economical of their human capital and rely even more on technology and advanced weaponry. Does that make them more "modern"? I would argue it is more the nature of the war as it is being prosecuted now as opposed to any concept of modernity.
