"I haven't written because I had nothing to say. Now I have something. Ukraine is stronger now than in February. I see it everyday. In February, I thought we would not hold a week. The crossing over the border came fast and strong in so many places.

I admit. I was a defeatist. I did not have the attitude we would win. I was ready to run. Now after fighting and seeing our army and what it can do, I believe we will win. We have had rest. Yes, some battles are very tough. Irpin was a difficult area, but we can rest. I have had many days of rest since 24 Feb.

I have had new training. New arms. New uniform. New everything. And experience and rest. Russian soldiers do not have this. More and more we are seeing them tired and hungry. We are seeing them exhausted with blackened eyes. We can rest in our country. They cannot. They have 2 months of battles some of them. How does it feel to see their comrades shot from the sky? Lay unburied in the fields?

Their big victory is only Mariupol. Outnumbering the defense 10 to 1 and they still cannot 'clean' the steelworks. 20,000 dead on their side and what have they done? It is a matter of time and will for who will win. We have both. They do not have either. The conscript army cannot occupy a country who will die defying them."

"We are always digging. If we stop for one day we dig. If we stop for several days we dig. Most often we dig in defenses ordered by officers to defend parts of villages, roads or other important areas.

I have dug more holes and moved more earth in 50 days than I have in 26 years being alive. Soon, you become experts at digging trenches. They are not outdated ideas. Trenches can save you.

More than one time trenches have saved us from drones or artillery. Good concealment is also recommended. We once dug a trench right through a destroyed home and used it as part of an observation post.

In that part of the trench we placed chairs from the home, and a kettle and pot. We could heat food because of the half standing walls that concealed smoke. We make do however we are able.

Maybe after the war I will work for the government to dig trenches for pipes or irrigation. I am a professional earth mover now. Beware Russians! I will bury you!"

It amazes me that whoever is in that car can just drive right past those tanks with nothing happening to them.

Particularly as Ukraine has given its citizens an app to quickly report locations of Russian forces and which correlates the individual reports to help provide an overall intel picture.

Is there where China flexes their with chip production and can slow rearming down? At some point we have to keep things for our own use.
Taiwan are the kings of the latest and greatest chip production, and it isn't even close. I'm sure they'd be willing to supply everything we need.

That being said, I don't think Stinger missiles require the latest and greatest chips. And there are plenty of manufacturers of 'non latest' chips outside of China.
It depends on how old the chips are. The processes for those chips may not be around any more. I would be a little surprised if those parts were sourced from China as the defense companies focus alot on semiconductor sourcing from US companies.

There's going to be a delay replenishing the Army's MANPADS missile stocks, either by restarting the Stinger line or by buying a more modern replacement system. To be fair, the Army still has many thousands of Stingers in stock and has continuously upgraded them and extended their shelf life over the years.

Can some ex-military or logistics folks enlighten us on how Ukraine will maintain and repair all these different heavy weapons?

I'm happy at this flood of arms, but it can't be easy or quick training up a whole army of mechanics on the many different hardware rolling into the Ukraine.
Given the last 60 days of combat operations, I have plenty of confidence in the Ukrainians being able to wield these new weapons and maintain them in an effective manner. Combat is the ultimate innovator. Ulysses our arty expert can chime in here but I would think most artillery systems require the same general maintenance, just like an IC engine requires the same lubrication between ford and chevy. We have already seen them cannibalize parts from one piece to another and should be able to do the same on these. I suspect they would also send certain groups of weapons to certain areas to simplify the logistics IE send Arty X to the SE and Arty Y to the NE. At this point in the war the underground rat lines for small stuff is likely very efficient all the way to the front, the big stuff likely also very efficient to behind the front, getting the big stuff within range in wide open areas like the east is where the difficulty lies. This is why the need for long range artillery along with drones is key to any major successful UKR counter strikes without suffering significant loss. Some of this is supposed to enter theatre in the next 1-2+ weeks. In the meantime it appears the front is mostly stagnant, with most clashes engaged with recon type (cannon fodder) elements, of the russians, getting exposed to territorial defense units and SOF. I do see UKR continuing to counter in the Kherson and Kharkiv areas but not so much in the dead east. Unless something extraordinary occurs, I think Mariupol will have to survive another 4-6 weeks before any counter could get to them and this would have to include enough blocking elements to stop russia from countering/resupplying from Crimea or the East. On the other hand, send in enough predator/reaper drones with ISR to be on station 24/7 to provide direct support in Mariupol while also knocking out any Indirect fire assets stationed within range of Mariupol, while small squads sneak in Antitank range as directed by ISR. Do this and I think Mariupol could get a break in days, but it wouldn't be over and worse would come UNLESS it broke the russians into mass retreat/surrender. You would have to be able to defend in place continually as the russians resupply from the east and crimea to the southwest while they continue to pound the area from afar. Mariupol is currently 120KM behind enemy lines and the drones would likely have to stage out of Dnipro almost 2 HR flight time one way or possibly Zaporizhia closer to 1.3 hours (half if Reaper variant) The assets required to get them all out civilian/military would be massive, requiring you to completely control Melitopol and at least contest Donetsk.

We're going to see many of the countries which provided materiel to Ukraine also offer to repair damaged equipment.

France's victorious Macron boosts weapons, stakes in Ukraine - April 25, 2022

Quote:

In another remarkable move, Macron is talking openly about the guns, lifting a veil of secrecy he'd thrown over French military aid. The delivery and the publicity together signal a tougher line from Macron in his dealings with Putin talking less and engaging more in brinksmanship with the Kremlin.

Macron was in the closing stages of his presidential re-election campaign when he name-dropped the Caesar cannons in an April 21 interview with the newspaper Ouest-France. He also mentioned Milan anti-tank missiles, although those supplies had already been reported.

Macron didn't give numbers. Citing unidentified French sources, Ouest-France said 12 Caesars will be drawn from the French arsenal and that 40 Ukrainian artillery soldiers were arriving for training at a military base in the south of France.

Macron said his "red line" remains not entering into direct conflict with Russia, but within that limit, "we must provide maximum help to the Ukrainians."

His armed forces minister tweeted that thousands of shells would also be part of the delivery. The Caesars will allow their crews to go hunting for Russian artillery pieces being used in eastern Ukraine that are indiscriminately pummeling civilian targets.

Russia cannot possibly conduct an effective fighting retreat against a sustained attack. If Ukraine can gather the resources for a substantial and deep attack at the right point, they could easily drive deep into the rear of Russian formation and cut them off because the Russian leadership structure absolutely could not manage a response. A major collapse on part of the battlefield would happen, I suspect.

So selling arms to Nazi Germany and providing a safe haven for stolen treasure during WW2 is fair game but allowing another country to give away Swiss manufactured ammo is too far?

I did Nazi that coming.

Yeah, that's the really hypocritical part. I get wanting to remain neutral. But making ammo and selling to Germany kind of threw that out the window already.
