Fabulous article by a former Commander, US Army Europe.

Shares his first-hand observation of both the Russian and Ukrainian armies over the course of several decades.

Definitely worth a read: WHAT I SAW
Great read!

This means we are getting more serious about logistics and supplying things neccessary and not just patchworking on an ad hoc basis.

Just a guess, but i'd think it's going up to the Baltic Sea and dropping in Poland. Maybe quicker this way than transporting across land, idk.

The Russians, being Russians, do a funny thing where they put fuel tanks inside the cabin on Mi-8/17's ...

Bet there is not a single no smoking sign in there either.

Yes. Now we'll be strategically arming Ukraine. They're only going to get more lethal

Sinking a vessel from a NATO nation heading to a NATO nation is a very bad idea for Russia

This is stretching the envelope at our finest. High stakes poker and I love it. I wouldn't want to be on a P-8 in the Black sea this week - but shooting down an unarmed US surveillance plane invites a more costly US response ... like a cruise missile attack on the Crimea Bridge over the Kerch Strait. Or destroying something equally valuable to Russia's war effort.

Wash Post story of US transferring Russian made Mi-17 helicopter previously used in Afghanistan...by Afghans..

we bought it and paid for it, Now we re-directing to Ukrainians...
.

Great article, thank you.
Quote:

When the United States wanted to purchase a fleet of helicopters for the Afghan government in the early 2010s, it chose the Mi-17 sold by a Russian state-owned arms exporter.

The decision infuriated U.S. lawmakers who felt the Pentagon should choose an American manufacturer. But the Defense Department stayed the course, saying the Russian helicopters were relatively inexpensive, functioned well in Afghanistan's desert expanses and high altitudes, and Afghan pilots knew how to fly them.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky personally appealed to Biden for the helicopters last week during a phone call that resulted in the last-minute addition of the aircraft to the latest security package

Conveniently, five Mi-17s already were in Ukraine for maintenance when Russia's offensive began not an uncommon occurrence given Ukraine's expertise in Soviet-designed military equipment. The other 11 Mi-17s are in storage at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base outside of Tucson. The Pentagon could send them to Ukraine as early as this weekend
It's almost like Zelensky has a team scouring all over the internet for information on what country has what arms. Also why Zelensky is so critical. His job is basically fundraising arms, and his rock star hero status is so important.

Far more likely that the P-8 was keeping an eye on the subs that have reportedly been launching cruise missiles into Ukraine. The Moscow would have likely been easily tracked by our Drones and/or E-3s that have been down around the edges of the Black Sea for weeks.

Yep, and he also has diplomatic experience, meaning he'll be cultivating an international torrent of arms, aid, and funds to the Ukraine.

Also as a former 3 star general with experience in Germany, Iraq, and Afghanistan, he'll command respect from other country counterparts, and you won't be able to bull**** him in arms discussions.

Not unarmed. P-8's are a real threat to ships and subs in their own right. They may be unarmed in this context but the Russians wouldn't know one way or the other.

"Sources". "Reportedly". Sounds like someone trying to stir up trouble and people just uncritically repeat it without any corroboration.

Probably why he deleted it. Too much potential backlash even if he did hear it from a normally reputable second hand source. Wouldn't be surprised if he was asked directly by whoever told him to delete it. It wasn't up for very long.

No. It's not even close, sadly. This thing still has plenty of room to get even more effed up. Much respect to those giving their lives in order to preserve the freedom of Ukraine and its citizens.

Anyone wonder if it's possible for an outbreak of the soldiers in Mariupol as Russia diverts forces elsewhere?

snipt from the wash post article...

What i find interesting is that we have in storage 11 Mi-17 russian made helicopters in AZ airbase...

Yes, it good to be rich... we poured nearly 5 Billion $ to Ukrainian just start of this conflict. Congress will likely authorize more if needed.

This is one "special operation" Putin can't win...

And to put into perspective what we're able to sustain, we were pumping out around 9 billion a MONTH in order to maintain operations in Iraq. We're not even breaking a sweat.
