After viewing images of the murdered civilians my heart is saying yes to a hot war with Russia. My head is saying mayyybe. Can we do some 'kinetic' attacks in Ukraine and blame it on someone else?
My great uncle was captured on the first days of the Bulge. Bounced around multiple POW camps in Germany and was a known trouble maker and again, never said he was mistreated. It wasn't a death sentence for troops to surrender to Nazi Germany. That same treatment wasn't expected for the Marines in the Pacific and the Russians seem to lean quite a bit that directionagent-maroon said:
My grandfather was captured by the Nazis at Salerno and held as a POW in Poland. He froze his ass off and lost weight but never talked about being mistreated. He and a couple of other officers escaped when the Nazis were retreating from the Russian advance. While walking their way to safety they encountered a Russian patrol that stole their food at gunpoint but didn't kill them before moving on. Some Polish farmers gave them just enough that they didn't starve and they caught a rail car to Odessa & a British ship of some kind.
My grandfather hated the Germans, but he really, really, REALLY hated the Russians after that.

Was in Egypt last week. It's a big deal. Egypt imports most of their wheat from Ukraine and Russia ... and wheat is one-third of Egypt's caloric intake per person. Not much these poor countries can do except watch.aggiehawg said:
Bad move by Russia, IMO. That will draw more nations towards war.

No, the best analogy is every single battle in the Pacific after Corregidor. And BTW, there weren't any Marines on Corregidor in 1942.pocketrockets06 said:
I mean for an Aggie, you really should consider that the best analogy to Mariupol is actually Corregidor where the marines did surrender.

In #Ukraine, parents write contact details on the backs of their children in case they are killed and the child gets lost. https://t.co/F3BAKr44d5
Yes, I was about to correct you. My uncle, Paul A. Brown (A&M '28), Capt. USMC, was on Corregidor and eventually died in a Jap POW camp in Japan.benchmark said:No, the best analogy is every single battle in the Pacific after Corregidor. Edit. The smallish 4th Marine regiment (1,500) was at Corregidor and 500 died in captivity.
it seems to me, broadly, that as both sides reposition to fight in the east that ukraine is in good shape to (continue) preventing russian advances but generally lacks the wherewithal for large-scale offensive operations

anyway bloomberg just reported that the u.s. is indeed sending the "600" model switchblade, which has an anti-armor warhead
— Gerry Doyle (@mgerrydoyle) April 5, 2022
... so far the russian air force has only been able to operate over its own lines in the east and south. shutting that down is important (not that russian airpower has been particularly effective even in those areas)

Ex-Soviet Heavy Armored spotted being moved out of Storage and onto Trains today in Czechia, this may be some of the Equipment that the Czech Government had received Approval from Germany to send to Ukraine specifically the BMP-1s, these T-72 MBTs are most likely being sent also. pic.twitter.com/cFD9LjTxVH

The greater the casualties sustained by the Russian military, the harder it will be for Moscow to accept a compromise. Russian popular opinion is supportive of the war, but it will shift rapidly if Moscow accepts reduced terms. Are 10,000+ KIA worth retaking all of the Donbas?
— Rob Lee (@RALee85) April 4, 2022
Another issue is that the Ukrainian military is consistently characterized as weak and incompetent in Russian outlets. That obviously isn't true, and the sooner Russian websites admit that, the sooner people can come to terms with the Russian military's struggles in Ukraine. 4/

Is interesting how Russia manages to get so much video of Ukrainians in the act of purportedly committing atrocities in Ukraine. It also seems that each time a video is released by Russian sources, it's deconstructed, leading to a successively released video that addresses those weaknesses. There's a new video of Ukrainian soldiers posing with dead Russian soldiers somewhere near Kharkov, some of the dead have their hands tied behind their backs, clearly indicating execution.
— Russians With Attitude (@RWApodcast) April 4, 2022
I wouldn't bother with that account. You already know it's Russian based propaganda.
Except that in this case, the video is very real.
The scale of Russian war crimes in Ukraine is many many orders of magnitude higher than the Ukrainian ones. This does not mean though, that the war crimes perpetrated by Ukrainian forces should not also be investigated.

Maybe. Maybe the Russians wanted to taunt the West by putting all the bound bodies in the street. But maybe not....it would actually make more sense not to give the media such great fuel.
In Bucha it is said that every male aged 16-60 was killed by the Russians.
