Been burning for 40 mins and they keep opening fire on it. Seems weird for one already engulfed building

Only thing I can think of is that they think Zelenskyy is possibly in there because it is beyond overkill

Not sure if that link to google maps will work, but that's the plant. My guess is the building on fire is the one labeled as Navchal'no, but that's just my guess based on the camera angle and the fact that there was a reactor building on the left when the camera panned left.

Surely when the shelling has gotten close they powered down or greatly restrained the plant. Having it running full bore in the physical middle of a battle does not seem smart. People keep saying things the Russians won't do, but that appears to be just another line that they're willing to cross to save face in terms of looking like the old bully Russia.

It has six reactors. Two were down as of Feb 25

There's more to nuke plants than just reactors and cooling systems. There's generally buildings for fuel waste disposal, offices, and other things.

Nuclear power plants can't just shutdown immediately from what I know. I'm hoping a nuke engineer could fill in the blanks a bit more here.

No link or proof, saw it on TikTok so it probably isn't right (although it is kind of a news account). Guy said Russia believes we are doing a lot more than providing weapons at this point as a type of cruise missile has been shot down that Ukraine doesn't have the means to shoot down.

Nuke engineer here. Nuclear plants can do an emergency shutdown called a SCRAM. However, there is still a lot of residual heat that still needs to be removed from the reactor for a long time. The danger is if the Russians damage the systems that handle the prolonged core cooling. That's what happened at ***ushima, they lost long term heat removal, and then a steam blowoff had to occur which is what you saw from the videos of the roofs popping off. Chernobyl was a steam explosion stemming from a variety of reasons.

They can shut down the reactor right away (i.e. stop the fission process), but the fuel is still hot enough to melt itself down due to all the decay heat from radioactive products produced during operation. Active cooling is still necessary for a very very long time. Looks like the plant still has power so the pumps are still running, and from what I can see from the camera and the google map view of the plant it looks like an office building is what's being lit up right now.

Reactor containments are built to withstand fully fueled commercial airplane crashes so they should withstand some shelling, but no one has assaulted a nuclear power plant before so that's kinda a new one......

Not a nuclear engineer, but I did watch Chernobyl. Based off that, I learned that you should be able to shutdown a reactor in a matter of seconds. Also, I learned that Soviet built reactors are fool proof and impossible to meltdown.

UN nuclear folks were worried about an errant middle or explosion. All of them discounted the idea that a direct attack would happen.

I believe it takes days to shut down a nuke but I could be wrong. Probably providing power to most of Ukraine so they would want it on

Chernobyl did not have a containment dome. Which was one reason why the accident was so bad. Does this one?

Looking at the aerial there is no western style containment dome.

How stupid. If you want to shutdown power attack the damn switch gears or blow the power lines. The risk here is way to high.

Is this for real. Who is dumb enough to shell a nuke plant. Even if the reactors are off those things are still full of all kinds of 'dirty' water and waste some of it still very hot.

I wonder of the Russians were smart enough to check the wind direction" <-- sick joke for a sick event.
