You say building. Are they shelling the reactor?

Been burning for 40 mins and they keep opening fire on it. Seems weird for one already engulfed building
Russian army is firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Fire has already broke out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chornobyl! Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!

Only thing I can think of is that they think Zelenskyy is possibly in there because it is beyond overkill
Has to be fake.TAMUallen said:swc93 said:Burning now.TAMUallen said:

It has six reactors. Two were down as of Feb 25Jay Reimenschneider said:
Sorry l, but how do you have a nuke plant without a reactor?

Nuclear power plants can't just shutdown immediately from what I know. I'm hoping a nuke engineer could fill in the blanks a bit more here.hunter2012 said:
Surely when the shelling has gotten close they powered down or greatly restrained the plant. Having it running full bore in the physical middle of a battle does not seem smart. People keep saying things the Russians won't do, but that appears to be just another line that they're willing to cross to save face in terms of looking like the old bully Russia.

They can shut down the reactor right away (i.e. stop the fission process), but the fuel is still hot enough to melt itself down due to all the decay heat from radioactive products produced during operation. Active cooling is still necessary for a very very long time. Looks like the plant still has power so the pumps are still running, and from what I can see from the camera and the google map view of the plant it looks like an office building is what's being lit up right now.jabberwalkie09 said:Nuclear power plants can't just shutdown immediately from what I know. *FIREFIGHTERS NOT ABLE TO REACH FIRE AT UKRAINE NUCLEAR PLANT

Not a nuclear engineer, but I did watch Chernobyl. Based off that, I learned that you should be able to shutdown a reactor in a matter of seconds. Also, I learned that Soviet built reactors are fool proof and impossible to meltdown.jabberwalkie09 said:Nuclear power plants can't just shutdown immediately from what I know. I believe it takes days to shut down a nuke but I could be wrong. Probably providing power to most of Ukraine so they would want it onhunter2012 said:

Is this for real. Who is dumb enough to shell a nuke plant. Even if the reactors are off those things are still full of all kinds of 'dirty' water and waste some of it still very hot.jabberwalkie09 said:#BREAKING: Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Plant spokesman says Russian troops are shelling Europe's largest nuclear power plant- AP
