"The country that has historically tried to contain Ukraine doesn't need a self-sufficient, massive country such as ours. They think that it is dangerous to them just by means of our existence. But that's far from the truth. They are the ones threatening the whole world."

Slow start (maybe scroll forward to the 23-minute mark), but great discussion about Russian air force in Ukraine.

Guest speaker is an analyst from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a prestigious British defense think tank.

My grandfather flew/worked on the RC-135E Lisa Ann / Rivet Amber during the Cold War. A portion of the plane (I believe the radar system) was built/serviced in Greenville, TX at E-Systems/L3, and he traveled to Alaska and Hawaii for test flights. He is nearly 100 years old and can still tell stories for days on this aircraft and his theories on it's crash.

Originally designated C-135B-II, project name Lisa Ann, the RC-135E Rivet Amber was a one-of-a-kind aircraft equipped with a large 7 MW Hughes Aircraft phased-array radar system.[15] Originally delivered as a C-135B, 62-4137 operated from Shemya Air Force Station, Alaska from 1966 to 1969. Its operations were performed in concert with the RC-135S Rivet Ball aircraft (see below). The radar system alone weighed over 35,000 pounds and cost over US$35 million (1960 dollars), making Rivet Amber both the heaviest C-135-derivative aircraft flying and the most expensive Air Force aircraft for its time. This prevented the forward and aft crew areas from having direct contact after boarding the aircraft.[16]
The system could track an object the size of a soccer ball from a distance of 300 miles (480 km), and its mission was to monitor Soviet ballistic missile testing in the reentry phase. The power requirement for the phased array radar was enormous, necessitating an additional power supply. This took the form of a podded Lycoming T55-L5 turboshaft engine in a pod under the left inboard wing section, driving a 350 kVA generator dedicated to powering mission equipment.[16]
On the opposite wing in the same location was a podded heat exchanger to permit cooling of the massive electronic components on board the aircraft. This configuration has led to the mistaken impression that the aircraft had six engines. On June 5, 1969, Rivet Amber was lost at sea on a ferry flight from Shemya to Eielson AFB for maintenance, and no trace of the aircraft or its crew was ever found.[17]

SE tip of Ukraine that they just blew the bridge to from Odesa. Borders Moldova. Combined amphib and air deployment of troops to that spot from Crimea via Black Sea. Would be stupid but this is Russia we're talking about.
Rossticus

Of interest is the fact that Moldova has long been what Russia advocated for Ukraine as terms for "Peace". Pro-Russian government (corrupt as hell resulting in impoverishment), neutral, demilitarized. Russia still spawned a Russian separatist movement in a border region.

A less Russian leaning president was finally elected after people got sick of the isht hole that the Russia model has drug their country down into and suddenly Russia is pushing destabilization and threatening invasion. Being Russia's "friend" only delays the inevitable. A slow death while living on your knees, and eventual Russian aggression once you're too weak to protect yourself. And if you wish to protect yourself you're a Russophobic Nazi.

Yeah. Ukraine would have totally been just fine if they'd gone in that direction.

Guess Russia needs to add another country to the "unfriendly" list. Propaganda can report on yet another "US Puppet". How many countries is it that we have direct control over now? 40ish?

If Russia didn't try an amphibious landing early on, I have a hard time seeing them do it now less an amphib, a cruiser, and whatever that patrol boat that got rocketed. Plus the marine units have seen pretty heavy fighting in the south and Mariupol so I'm not sure how capable they'd be anyway. Plus the Neptune threat isn't theoretical anymore.

Maybe they're crazy enough to try it but I'm leaning towards a distraction/feint to keep the Ukrainians looking at Transnistria and the coast instead of driving towards Kherson

Is this more of Beijing playing both sides against the middle, or a signal that China may regret its support of Vladimir Putin? The largest manufacturer of commercial drones has "suspended" operations in both Russia and Ukraine. Shenzen-based DJI claims that this reflects the company's principles rather than taking sides, but …

Quote:

Chinese drone-maker DJI, the world's largest manufacturer of commercial drones, has suspended operations in Ukraine and Russia, becoming the first major Chinese company to openly quit the markets over a war that the leadership in Beijing refuses to condemn.
The privately owned Shenzhen-based company said in a statement on Tuesday that it was undergoing an internal compliance assessment and would temporarily halt activity in both countries pending an outcome. It was unclear what triggered the decision, which a company spokesperson told Chinese media was "not a statement targeting any particular country but rather a statement about our principles." …
President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine has put many Chinese companies in a bind. Beijing's official position is to claim neutrality while maintaining rhetorical support for Russia and a normal economic relationship with its burgeoning geopolitical and trade partner a potential lifeline for the Russian economy under the pressure of sanctions from the United States and its allies.
But for Chinese conglomerates with international reach, continuing to do business in Russia could mean losing access to far more important markets in Europe and North America if they end up being targeted by secondary sanctions from Western governments. Most Chinese companies with a presence in Russia have chosen to stay silent about their plans, while some have quietly adjusted operations to minimize exposure to the Russia market.
Last month, Ukraine's vice-PM urged DJI CEO Frank Wang to stop doing business with Russia, alleging that DJI drones were being used as targeting devices for Russian missiles. Other Ukrainian officials have accused DJI of tweaking their drone platforms to allow Russian operators to evade anti-aircraft systems. DJI had consistently denied those allegations, claimed that there was no military purpose for their product, and that they would enforce provisions to ensure that they didn't get used for that purpose:

Hello my friend- look on a map.

The Russkie attackers are a few hundred miles to the east moving west.

if they were to take Odessa, they could then link with Transnistria in Moldova.

This is highly concerning and not unexpected. I think Putin would love to position nuclear arms on our doorstep, given our leadership role in NATO's arming of Ukraine. Moreover, if he initiates action to do it, it will be the CMC v 2.0, and he will not back down, IMO.

I won't be surprised if it happens.

Let him try. It's yet another instance of Russia actually doing what they accused another country of planning to do, without evidence or logic, as false pretext for a land grab. Let them FAAFO.

If Cuba were to launch so much as a Russian spit wad at the US we'd shoot it down and then burn down the region of Cuba it came from. Cuba has way more to lose by housing Russian missiles than we do.

I think Putin has misunderstood the power of nuclear weapons. Nukes stop countries from invading you. If you use them in war, its game over, the world will retaliate 100x, and everyone loses.

The are so offensive, they are defensive. It doesn't matter if the nukes are in cuba or in a sub or in the russia mainland. If they decide to try to quick strike Miami, Disneyworld, Atlanta and DC they've just condemned Moscow and St. Petersberg to a smoldering crater.

He's spent so much money on a weapon system he can't use when he's getting rolled up in a conventional war.
