They were attacking the building between the museum and the $ sign (gift shop?).

They attacked every building in the museum area. The last in the middle received the most attention though

They haven't shelled a reactor, just a building uncomfortably close to one.

Wonder if Ukraine forces were running some sort of C&C operations there, or if Russian forces were taking potshots from the building by a few security troops.

And they're definitely not having firefighters extinguish it either. They definitely turned away all of the flashing lights

I think it is vehicle alarms set off by the concussion of shells or cannon fire.

So was the tactic here to light up a building that wouldn't cause radiation leaks but to scare the operators into turning over control so they can safely shut the plant down or cut the power its providing to the country?

That's what it seems like.

At some point they were going to have to go after Ukraine's electricity production and 50% of their power comes from nuclear so this was bound to happen eventually.

All reactors in Ukraine are VVER reactors designed by Rosatom (Russian state owned nuclear agency) so the Russians know them inside and out.

Obviously it's sketchy seeing a fire fight and explosives from a nuke plant security camera, but even the Russians aren't dumb enough to blow up their own reactor designs.

If there's no resistance that's not necessary. Maybe the Russians are trying to scare us. Maybe they're incompetent, scared, and hungry

They are designed to withstand the impact of a 747 crashing into them 9/11 style.

They will be okay.

Ukraine's resistance is severely hampered if you take out their electricity production, and taking over a site with 6 operating reactors is a pretty good way to accomplish that goal.

Don't ever count out the ability of someone to be dumb.

That being said, this seemed like something way more surgical and not intended to create a nuclear meltdown scenario. All they needed to do for a meltdown was to send a missile or airstrike.

Some of their vehicles pushed further and out of sight towards the cameras which is next to the reactor area. Looks like the road they came in surrounds all sides of the plant. No doubt they are inside the plant now with tanks very close to reactors

The shell, yes. Everything else, not so much. The reactors aren't necessarily the concern. It's all of the infrastructure around them.

Taking out the power also helps Putin slow the information coming out which is severely hampering his BS narrative.

Your talking about containment dome standards in the US. The Soviet Union never had the same standards.

For example Chernobyl was built with no containment dome, which is why when it melted down then exploded it rained fizzle material for a 100km or so and sent a radioactive cloud over Europe.

It is also why ***ushima did not spew material into the air.

I believe the Soviet Union did have domes on later reactors (Chernobyl was older design). I don't know what is here as far as containment.

No; it was on the road into the facility being blocked by the armored vehicles. Lasted for 10+ minutes and then shut off.

These are VVERs not RBMKs. The RBMKs did not have containment structures up to Western standards, the VVERs do

For example Chernobyl was built with no containment dome, which is why when it melted down then exploded it rained fizzle material for a 100km or so and sent a radioactive cloud over Europe.

Chernobyl had a steam explosion which blew up the building and exposed the core to the outside environment, then was hot enough to cause a graphite fire which continued to spew stuff out of the open building, then the fuel melted.

It is also why ***ushima did not spew material into the air.

***ushima did have a release of radioactivity because three different containment buildings (of Western standard) did explode due to hydrogen buildup inside the building and subsequent detonation of the hydrogen.

I believe the Soviet Union did have domes on later reactors (Chernobyl was older design). I don't know what is here as far as containment.

See first point.

You can take out the interconnect to the plant if you want it offline. No reason to make electricity without connection to the grid.

If Putin wanted to maintain infrastructure for a future RU puppet he would do exactly this. There is no need to control the power plant proper. Take down a transmission substation or a couple of spans of transmission and you have isolated the power plant. Take and hold those substation breakers and you can turn the power on and off at your leisure (with the correct knowledge). Directly attacking a power plant, especially a nuke, is a fools errand.
