I was thinking more about surface to air/manpad issues with helicopters the 45 or so miles around to Bagram, that's a whole lotta ground to secure AND have troops/contractors still operating and needing to be evacuated from the embassy AND Bagram at that point

U.S. officials tell Fox News General Frank Mckenzie, the commander of U.S. Central Command, met with Taliban leaders Sunday in Doha, Qatar to warn them to not attack Americans evacuating Kabul or else the U.S. military would "strike back"

Frequent updates by Al Jazeera. A lot of countries are sending staff in to help evacuate. The UAE is acting as (in a sense) a neutral party to help facilitate evacuations. A lot of flights in and out of that airport. The French have moved their embassy operations to inside the airport facility. They are also staging troops for intervention if necessary.

Curious if we start seeing some chartered long range, efficient aircraft coming in to limit the fuel needs.

So far the Taliban seems to be holding back on the airport and not interfering with operations. Thus far, no reports of major clashes.

To me it's pretty clear there's been some sort of arrangement for evacuation. Taliban could've already walked up on the airport if they wanted to. So far they haven't. Again, they aren't just dealing with the United States but also pretty much the entire EU is evacuating their people along with a lot of surrounding Asian countries. Even Nepal is evacuating their people. They want to avoid international incident. India says their embassy is staying open for now.

And Al Jazeera is now reporting there are protests in Iran against the new Afghan Taliban government. Apparently there are a lot of Afghan refugees there. In fact, it seems like a lot of the Afghan troops who abandoned their posts in the border area tried to get there. It's unlikely Iran is a big fan of having a fanatical Sunni country next to them with modern weapons.

That being said, there was a post on another thread showing advanced US made military equipment being hauled in to Iran.

Maybe Biden will release all Gitmo inmates tonight and fly them back to Afghanistan so they can join the celebration tomorrow

Yes. Helos operate at low altitude making those runs all over. Not ideal but less problematic than big aircraft that can't maneuver and are in takeoff/landing phases.
