This thread has me thinking that smartphones should be banned in K-12. Dumb old Nokia style only. The social media and apps on the devices are designed to be addictive, and designed to take and hold the users attention. It's not conductive to learning. Society is royally ****ed.

To be fair regarding the phone/email option, over the last 10 years trying to accomplish anything over the phone has become a chore. Hold times, "Press 1 for", etc, etc...

Has email decreased our ability to socialize physically? Sure. So did the phone.

Why do we rely on email over phone calls? Because as a whole, it is significantly more productive. Are there situations where a phone call is better? Yes. But it's kind of silly to blame email (or texts) for this societal downfall of civilization when it has probably been one of the more significant advances that any of us have seen in our lifetimes in regards to communication.

You're exactly right. Children can and will get addicted to these things. Those cringey PSA's and commercials of the late 90's and early 2000's of the kid being a zombie in front of the tv screen turned out to be correct.

Honestly I didn't realize they were even allowed. Agreed there should be no reason when these kids enter school that smart phones should be allowed. If they need to bring a phone for emergency or after-school use, then check it in at the office at the start of the school day.

I've found it's way faster to order food over the phone than over the Internet or an app. I can speak an order faster than I can fill in the online menus.

Much of that is just a product of age/generation. I grew up tinkering with computers so I can run productivity circles around anyone over the age of 35, and I'm sure there's plenty of 20 somethings that can run productivity circles around me.

It's a matter of balance. "That guy" who is sorely lacking the ability for in-person or even in-phone communication? He's probably still employed because the online production that makes up the bulk of most people's day he is super efficient at.

The problem is parents not having authority over their kids before their kids hit puberty. Just let the kids do whatever they want from infancy onward. And many parents are themselves immature, so the kids just become like their parents.

We don't know yet if the youth will regret their youth and how that will impact their parenting.

My kids are young, they don't have smarts phones or tablets. Until they need them for school, they won't have them, ever. When they do get them, they will be locked down and come into our room at night.

But please by all means think I'll be lenient with my own kids.

The biggest problem is access to the internet with tablets at a young age. This damages their time preference and screws up their ability to focus. Kids should never have tablets or phones, period until they are old enough to understand right from wrong at the absolute earliest, preferably waiting until puberty.
