I swear that looks like the elevator going up about the 2 second mark
Clearly you can't accept that it wasn't the grain elevator that was the big explosion. What will it take for you to see otherwise? All video evidence thus far is pretty clear that it was the building in front of the elevator that exploded.
Of course I'm willing to wait and see.

We're all guessing, for entertainment purposes, right now. You, as well as me.

Looks pretty clear to me that there were two explosions. Or even three, if an explosion preceded the fire. When the explosion happened, it appeared that a second, larger explosion overtook the first. And while it is possible that the elevator simply had debris knocked off of it, the video looks for all the world that some of the silos are blowing out.

The live stream video shows the elevator still standing, though heavily damaged. Several possibilities. One, is that the elevator did not blow up at all. Two, is that the elevator blew up, the outer walls blew out, the inner core is still standing. Three, one end of the elevator blew up, but not the other.

I'm wondering about the third possibility. The elevator you can see on the live feed does not appear to be as long as the pre-explosion photos.

The previous post is by no means intended to be utilized as a substitute for IMDG Code and refers to the stowage of general and containerized cargoes, not bulk.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki it is not, and not even close.
It will be interesting to see what the rating of the explosion is.
Won't even rate 1 kiloton.

Probably around 250 tons of TNT equivalent would be my guess.
Yep. That explosion seems relatively small compared to the Tianjin explosion from a few years ago.

And that's why you don't smoke near a grain elevator.
Our local co-op had an employee who was surly and unpopular with customers.

He lost his job soon after I told the manager I saw him smoking as he unloaded a grain truck.

I don't think that got him fired, it was being caught doing it again. And again.

So I don't know much about explosions but to casual observer it looks like their were 3 explosions. First looks like fireworks were somehow ignited and caused a relatively small explosion. This caused a chain reaction of some kind of chemicals to explode (weird maroon cloud), and then immediately after the chemical explosion the grain silos explode (big white cloud).

Seems likely to be an accident.

It's a reasonable suspicion, but I think the Iranian Navy could wind up being involved on their own as well. Because they are demonstrably the most inept folks in the world around boats.

Comments?

Seems to show that at least some silos blew up/out.

Yes and no. Hezbollah is a member of the ruling government coalition, but they are not the largest party. The largest party is the FPM which is a center-right, Lebanese nationalist and Christian nationalist party. The current President of Lebanon is the founder of FPM.

Nitrogen tetroxide? Would explain red/brown color. That's a rocket propellant.

Quote:

Highly toxic; Quick CPC Like other nitrogen oxides, inhalation of NO4 may induce delayed pulmonary edema. Concentrations of 25-50 ppm cause irritation of the eyes and nose while 50-100 ppm can cause pulmonary edema and death. Cases of irritant-induced asthma have been reported. In animal experiments, methemoglobin level of 55% were produced in one hour after application of NO4 to the skin of rats. HSDB Liquid is an equal mixture of nitrogen dioxide and nitrogen tetroxide (evolves toxic vapors);

A strong oxidizing agent; Reacts with water producing nitric acid and nitric oxide;

Classifications in the EU: Causes burns; Highly toxic by inhalation; Human exposures most commonly associated with "silo-fillers disease." Three members of Apollo/Soyuz Test Project crew were exposed to an estimated average concentration of 250 ppm in flight; Each member displayed signs and symptoms of chemical pneumonitis and increased methemoglobin levels; "Since N2O4 is in equilibrium with NO2, the toxic properties observed in clinical and toxicological cases have not distinguished between the two." Israel is not known for attacking large citizen populations, not saying it is not the case here but doesn't fit their M.O. Plus if it is true there was a US ship docked they would have not done the attack at the risk of turning one of the few countries that are on their side.

Yeah this seems more plausible because ammonium nitrate will burn red but the smoke is a deep orange iirc. Maybe some heavy metal salts like strontium from the fireworks could be contributing.

Grain elevators blown open. Looks like internal explosion blowing out, could be external blowing in.

Is that a view of the face of the silo that took the blast or the back side of the building?

Either way, amazing its still standing (for the most part).

my guess is it is a chain of events...fireworks get lit, they hit a supply of something very explosive then the grain elevators go. the pics seem to point to this. but we will see.
