It might sound harsh, but if that's they way they're going to react because they think they have a disease that's going to kill less than .1% of the population I'm not sure it's all that sad.

I think a higher prevalence of complicating factors in the older population is also a problem. Higher cardiovascular disease rates and diabetic rates.
If we can test and determine who has immunity vs who doesn't we can start getting some people back to work.

Serological testing will also get us much better data on the virus itself. Given the number of mild and asymptomatic cases in the few populations we have tested, the magical modelers are pulling numbers out of their collective arses to make their projections.
BD has an FDA approval for a point of care finger stick test. Not sure how long before they can get that widely deployed.

The shelter in place period is being used not just to slow the spread but as a delaying tactic to build up the testing capacity, PPE and vent stocks, and evaluate treatment options. The real importance of the more robust testing capacity is going to be felt when we start loosening restrictions. And that's even moreso the case if we can establish a treatment regimen in the interim that lessens severity.
Widespread plus quickly available testing will allow for contact tracing which will reduce/slow the spread without the need for as severe of restrictions like shelter in place. That plus a treatment option means we can take the teeth out of this thing.
