uh, I was responding to you putting a mask on when around sick people. Surgical masks don't really offer much protection for the wearer, but they do reduce risk to those around you if you're sick..which is why what the Singapore government said made sense, and why what the Japanese do culturally make sense.

South Africa is pretty liberal, what does that have to do with anything?

What about gloves? Seems like those would be more effective than masks.

S. Africa literally robbed (and killed in some instances) the rich and gave to the poor.

Kind of an aside, but I have seen an increase in the use of latex gloves by folks in the food and beverage industry here in the Houston area due to the virus. It should be the norm.

Since you guys seem to want to talk about masks, I'll leave you with this tidbit, and hang-up and listen:

"The national shortage of N95 respirator masks can be traced back to 2009 after the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, when the Obama administration was advised to replenish a national stockpile but did not, according to reports from Bloomberg News and the Los Angeles Times.

A federally backed task force and a safety equipment organization both recommended to the Obama administration that the stockpile be replenished of the 100 million masks used after the H1N1 outbreak, according to the Los Angeles Times."
“It ain’t like it used to be.”

"Surgeon General Tells U.S.: 'This Week It's Going To Get Bad'

"I want America to understand this week it's going to get bad," U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said Monday morning, speaking about the COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to stop the coronavirus from infecting more people in the U.S.

Adams also urged people to stay home to prevent the respiratory virus from spreading and he said too many people in New York and other states are ignoring guidance to observe social distancing and avoid close contacts with others.

Adams also noted that COVID-19 seems to be acting differently in the U.S. and other countries than it did in China, where it was detected in December. In an important shift, the virus seems to be affecting young people at higher rates."

virus can't penetrate skin. wouldn't be as useful as hand washing not touching your face IMO.

Understood. I was thinking in terms of making people aware not to touch their face when they have gloves on their hand. I know I'm more aware of that when I wear them when cooking.

Also don't think people use gloves properly. In food establishments in particular I've noticed the workers must think the gloves kill germs. They'll use one set of gloves to touch the food, register, money/CC, and then go back to the food.

I wore gloves and a mask to the grocery store but was kicked.

Yes, their shutdown is working, and you see results at around a ~4-6 day lag.

Up until 10 days ago they were on the ~20-25% a day growth line.

We are on the 33% growth line now, hopefully on shutdown NYC day +4 (tomorrow) we'll start to see that roll off of the sharp line.

When I look at a rolling trend of their liftings, I see the peak rate change actually being in the 2/29 - 3/3 range at a roughly 40% day over day change.

When did the lockdown start?
Zobel

Progressively starting on 2/21 in Lodi, Lombardy, leading to a total nationwide lockdown on 3/9, then a shutdown of all non-essential everything on 3/21.

You've got a lot of local epidemics being summed up in the Italy number. Lombardy is way worse locally than Italy is - at one point over half their cases were in that one province. Just like NYC is going to be worse locally than when its washed out in the US as a whole.

The archived data is downloadable and can be opened in Excel, here: https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19

I put the below charts together using their data output.

It looks like Miami is getting slammed now with quite a few hospitalisations and woefully under-reporting the number people being treated.

Does this mean we wont reach the multi-million level deaths the doomers predicted?

But I am curious what it really means.

Let's do this.

Quote:

An orphan drug is a pharmaceutical agent developed to treat medical conditions which, because they are so rare, would not be profitable to produce without government assistance. The conditions are referred to as orphan diseases.

The assignment of orphan status to a disease and to drugs developed to treat it is a matter of public policy in many countries and has yielded medical breakthroughs that might not otherwise have been achieved, due to the economics of drug research and development.

In the U.S. and the EU, it is easier to gain marketing approval for an orphan drug. There may be other financial incentives, such as an extended period of exclusivity, during which the producer has sole rights to market the drug. All are intended to encourage development of drugs which would otherwise lack sufficient profit motive to attract corporate research budgets and personnel.

Orphan Drug Designation is a fast track program for treatments that lack a sufficient patient population to attract profitable investment. Rare diseases...I think the US threshold is 200,000.

They get guaranteed faster review times, no requirements for pediatric development, and waived user fees for marketing application. Apart from the user fee, I'm not sure they really needed the rest of it in this climate. Review times will be faster anyway and no one is going to hang up on pediatric program.

Does this speed up the time that it can be classified as a "cure"? If so, from what approximate time frame to what approximate time frame?

No. This is purely about administrative process and cost incentives. The bar for scientific evidence doesn't change on the basis of fast track designation. Safety/efficacy is always a matter of risk-benefit.

For most situations, this would reduce the amount of time the FDA is allowed to take for review. It would also allow certain studies that might normally be required to either be waived or more easily deferred. In this case, I think this doesn't matter as much as the urgency is significantly more apparent as a public health matter. The user fees and, I think there are some tax benefits, will help Gilead though.
