I don't think there has been a single poster that has claimed that smokers are much more susceptible.

So no big deal... will only impact the older of the 34 million Americans who smoke.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-09/alcohol-kills-14-in-iran-in-misguided-effort-to-kill-virus

Quote:

Fourteen people in Iran's southwestern Khuzestan province died overnight from alcohol poisoning, the Fars News Agency reported Monday, as some turned to ingesting industrial-grade ethanol and methanol in a misguided effort to stave off the coronavirus tearing through the country.

Deaths from alcohol poisoning were also reported in the provinces of Tehran and Alborz. An unfounded rumor has spread through the country that drinking alcohol will kill the virus, and hospitals have seen a spike in alcohol-poisoning cases, the Mehr news agency reported. More than 200 are reported hospitalized in Khuzestan alone, according to the Iranian Labour News Agency.

This is horrible news for some folks on this thread.

“It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.”

My comment was in reference to some people who seem to think posting any good news is "downplaying" the virus. The doom and gloomers have a hair trigger.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Agreed. But we've also got the "it's just the flu" posters as well to balance them out.

Honestly we've got a pretty happy medium here at Texags.

Fairly detailed article about how Taiwan slammed the lid on the Kung Flu very quickly.

Quote:

TAIPEI, Taiwan As countries around the world grapple with the coronavirus, Taiwan may offer valuable lessons on how to curb its spread.

The island is just 81 miles and a short flight away from mainland China, where COVID-19 is believed to have originated in the city of Wuhan. As the outbreak took hold in January, many Taiwanese business people and their families based in China were returning to celebrate the Lunar New Year, and up to 2,000 Chinese tourists a day visited the island, potentially bringing the virus with them.

And yet, Taiwan has had only 47 cases of COVID-19 and one death as of Tuesday far fewer than China's 80,754 cases and 3,136 deaths, a stark contrast even when taking into account the enormous population difference: Taiwan's 23 million to China's 1.4 billion. Taiwan's numbers are also much lower than neighboring countries such as South Korea, which has had more than 7,500 cases, and Japan, with 530. It's also faring better than countries much farther away from China, such as Italy, with more than 9,000 cases, and the United States, which has over 700.

Of the 100-plus countries and territories affected, Taiwan has the lowest incidence rate per capita around 1 in every 500,000 people for a place that is located so close to China and with so much travel to and from.

What lessons can Taiwan teach the world so other countries can stem the spread of the virus?

Of course Nothing But Crap News has to get in their plug for government run healthcare at the end.

The Taiwanese hate the power struggle with the Chinese. They could've announced they had a bad case of the sniffles and Taiwan would've jumped at the opportunity to ban them from entering.

Also, EVA Air is awesome!! Only airline I fly when going to Hong Kong.

I just find it interesting that the most scrutiny Obama received back during the H1N1 virus was going "chalk" on his NCAA basketball bracket (and that was in March, right around this time).

Can you imagine if Trump even tried to fill out a bracket in a week during all this hysteria. And swine flu killed over a thousand a month in mostly all demographics (sure it skewed older but not like this one, at least so far).

What fun is a new virus without hysteria? You would think that this thing has killed more than the flu. It may even get to stomach bug levels at some point.

No. It's not the flu. It's a new virus. It may catch the flu at some point tho.

It doesn't scare me. I'm not sure how to answer that. If I worked in hospital, I wouldn't quit my job.

If I caught it, I would return to work 14 days after recovering and get back at it.

It is a "presumptive case" in Tarrant county by someone that traveled to a conference in Kentucky.

I never get a flu shot and so I would probably not want a vaccine for this either. I would just get over it if I got it. Not a big deal.

Or you'd be in ICU. Little chance you'd die, but you'd be miserable. And the chances of that are much higher happening to you than a routine flu infection.
