Damn, I hate that Facebook deletes that stuff because the people that repost it make it easy to compile a "who is a ****ing idiot" list.

I believe this is a serious situation being made 1000x times worse by the panic inducing media and unsubstantiated nonsense and rumors being posted on Twitter/Facebook/Reddit.

This panic is what is going to lead to our hospitals being overrun and it's at least partially avoidable if the media wasn't freaking everybody out.

Doesn't look like a 14 day quarantine is gonna cut it.
Quote:

Testing positive after being declared clear of the infection: a 31-year-old evacuee from the Diamond Princess cruise ship was first infected on Feb 18 while aboard, but later appeared to have recovered and tested negative on March 4 and 6 in Japan before returning to Hong Kong on March 7.

On March 9, she was found to be still infected. Disease expert Dr Joseph Tsang Kay-yan said several reasons such as sampling error and "insufficiently sensitive" tests could have accounted for the woman's "false negative" results in Japan. "Perhaps the swab was not done properly, or an antibody blood test was not done."

In any case she would have to be tested for a particular type of antibody 21 days after the diagnosis, before results can be conclusive that she was clear of the virus. He believes the woman was not reinfected as her antibodies upon recovering would give her immunity for a period of time.

Or it was a false negative test. The current test kits are very good, but nothing is 100%.
That's exactly what the above text suggests. My commentary was about the typical 14-day quarantine when this woman's infection has spanned 21 days and counting.

Oh. Yes. The image says deep state central. I was wondering why NY Gov selected New Rochelle to deploy National Guard to set up quarantine... i have had many clients from N.R.NY - but never thought about checking its wiki page for notable citizens. Oh my.

Its action by the govt & It's pertinent to the topic.

Yeah but it's not really a quarantine. Cuomo is just shutting everything down and the National Guard is there to help them clean. Those are his people, many probably have a direct line to him. The squeaky wheel gets the oil in this case, I don't think it's really that big of a move on his part other than concentrating a lot of resources to "save" a lot of VIPs.

me neither, but if you can treat mild cases / low severity cases on the cheap, over the counter, then that would be huge

it would require double blind trials to confirm, and we don't have that

but the potential mechanism of interaction is really really cool

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - Texas A&M University is suspending two days of class next week out of concern for the spread of coronavirus.

Classes are suspended for Monday, March 16, and Tuesday, March 17. Faculty and staff are still required to report to work on those days, the official told KBTX.
The University's dining, transportation, health, counseling, and other services will be available while classes are suspended.

In a message posted to the University's Coronavirus Update page, Provost Carol Fierke said there are no plans to cancel classes or move courses to an online format.
Monday, the university canceled school-sponsored travel outside of the United State through May 1.
On March 6, Texas A&M launched a website for mandatory reporting of student, faculty or staff travel through locations that have been designated as Level 1, 2 or 3 by the CDC for COVID-19. Any students, staff or faculty currently traveling to those areas will have to self-quarantine for 14 days. Those affected are also encouraged to monitor their temperature twice daily and make note of any cough or difficulty breathing. During business hours, affected Texas A&M students may call 979-458-8300. After business hours, students are encouraged to call the Dial-a-Nurse program at 979-458-8379.

There have been no cases of coronavirus reported at Texas A&M and no students who are presenting any symptoms, including those few individuals who returned from CDC Level 2 and 3 countries.

Im sure it has been discussed before on this thread, so forgive me for not keeping up with all almost 400 pages, but I wonder if the situation in Italy and Wuhan have any linkages to chronic respiratory issues caused by smoking.

In china, males smoke at a rate north of 60%, compared to 15-20% here. With that type of culture, you have people in old age that have smoked for decades, weakening their lung function. Also, the air quality in urban Chinese cities is notoriously bad, so even your average city-dweller probably has at least some respiratory damage.

I dont know the stats in Italy, as I have only been there once in 2003, but it seems like smoking would be more prevalent there as well culturally in which you might have a similar cohort - older people that were chronic life-long smokers.

Just a thought. would be interesting to put the numbers of deaths up against % of population of smokers.

It has been discussed throughout the thread, and other than the virus cheerleaders who only believe the worst news should be posted, most everyone agrees that it is far more dangerous to people who smoke.

Heck, just breathing in the air in China is probably close to as bad as puffing on some cigs. Northern Italy has a pretty high percentage of elderly residents, and smoking there is also very common.

it's bad and definitely does not help

what i'm concerned about stateside is how this virus plays out with the obesity epidemic

we might not smoke as much, but we're fatter, and what's that going to look like in terms of comorbidities

so just because we have fresher air and don't smoke as much doesn't mean we don't have our own set of vulnerabilites
