Amazing how quickly this was politicized.

I have spoken with several people regarding the virus and their response was "that's just the left trying to get trump out of office". It's being completely dismissed now that it's become political as being completely fake news. And this guy is getting on a cruise ship this week.

I think most agree here that panic is not in order and will not help, but to completely ignore the signs is just as illogical in my opinion.

If this is true, this is probably the worst news I have heard so far.

Its cool. What the world needs is less old people voting and a higher percentage of youngsters voting - because they are so smart, experienced, and unindoctrinated

I saw the phrase "calm proportion" and it is good way to say yes there is a risk to my elders and I will not scoff at precaution but also act rationally as a member of society.

Because Italy specifically scoffed at limits to human interactions, protocols, quarantine. border control, and literally blew it off until it was too late. I feel awful but hello.

Now since I'm an infectious disease physician who works in a major urban tertiary referral center every day and am fielding multiple calls per hour about this at times, allow me to learn ya somethin'.

The medical systems in these countries initially become saturated not because of the overwhelming numbers of critically ill patients, but by the innumerable patients who present with viral symptoms in a panic they have this. And because of disorganized or completely absent screening protocols, many of these otherwise reasonably healthy people are getting admitted for rule out. Which is fine, until it isn't. Now you've got a ton of beds eaten up by people not that sick, most of whom do not have symptoms, and suddenly they realize "****, now were intubating people in the hallway".

Most US hospitals in major urban centers are operating at or above capacity right now, despite almost nobody actually having the virus. That isn't because a bunch of extra dying 80 year olds are in house.

So yes, this is a big deal. Elderly people are going to die who otherwise didn't have to. But it's not because of the overwhelming virulence of this bug. It's because of media fueled public panic and incompetent state and federal public health leadership.

I'm on day 2 of my vacation... I looked at my retirement accounts and got depressed... I reached for my Vodka and its running out. So my question is this... are liquor stores still open?

Doesn't this assume the number of actual critical cases is below capacity? What if that isn't a good assumption?

To you people freaking out, I have this message.

1-The people in the USA have had weeks to prepare for this. Most of all of us have stocked up on items and sanitary supplies.

2-Most of us all are practicing what we have been told. Wash hands constantly and stay home to self quarantine if you know you have been exposed or you are showing symptoms.

3-The public at large is very aware of what is going on. We are all thinking about this virus and how to keep ourselves healthy

4-We are in a better place than Italy because we have had time to get educated on preventive measures and have had time to change habits

5-Testing people is a great idea, but testing is not a cure and wont stop you from getting the virus. What will keep you from potentially getting the virus is doing exactly what we are doing. (Washing hands and using common sense and self-quarantine if needed)

6-There isn't really much more that we can do. It is up to each individual to practice what we have learned. The Govt and private sector are trying to make test kits as fast as possible. Local communities are within their power to take action and limit group meetings. Schools and business are on alert.

7- The bottom line is that we are doing the best we can right now and I am sure we will adapt as the situation develops. CALM THE F DOWN.

8-If you are still freaking out, then stay at home and don't go anywhere. That is your right.

I don't exactly agree with the "everyone will be Italy..." statement but the lines clustering was interesting.

Why will we be an Italy? Why won't we be more consistent with S. Korea or Japan?

More and more universities are either starting spring break early or telling students not to come back from spring break...most are trying to get distance learning up and running for all their students.

Ohio St and Harvard are recent additions to the list.
