11 more cases in New York City, all connected to that damn lawyer.

One of the cases is the rabbi of the synagogue he attends, and apparently the members who are supposed to be under quarantine are refusing to do so.

Good luck every getting a synagogue to obey a quarantine. They are just as bad as mosques.

Great, this 14 month study that has a 55 year old upper cap on age will save us...

I get that it's a step but it's not a short cut.

cool. let's inject a bunch of 80 year olds and see if it kills em then!

it is impossible to keep up with this thread but I am able to get through every now and again. We are being quarantined on our ship if it is less than 2 weeks between port visits and not in the same port that we just went to. we had about 18 hours of liberty in rota spain and will be restricted to our ship when we pull in to our next port. no telling when we will be allowed to go back in to another port as things obviously continue to get worse before they get better. no one on my ship has any signs or symptoms, but this is coming from the admiral of EURAFRICOM. I REALLY hope I am able to get off this ship in a reasonable amount of time but then that puts me on an airplane from Europe back to my kids with asthma issues back in the states. UGH.,
Man that sounds not fun hope it works out!

From the available data this seems to be harmless in kids. I'm sure plenty of Chinese kids with asthma caught it but it still seems like it is a bunch of nothing in the young.

Seems like a bad idea to let you guys off the ship in a place like Spain but I guess everybody would go stir crazy otherwise. Good luck in your travels!

One more case in Houston, from the same group who went to Egypt that the rest are from.

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

But it is fewer than people concerned about the future of Democracy under Trump, wouldn't you say?

My medical friends all want the media just to shut up, the majority of the people dying of this virus are people with impaired health. In most cases the infected people are fighting it off, if their health isn't already impaired.

It's the current fad of the fake news and it will be gone in no time, when someone flashes the next shiny object in front of their face.

I would say that anyone that gets on a cruise ship right now is crazy. Unless you want to potentially have to live on it for the next month or so...

It only takes one person to get sick (and they might not even have coronavirus!) and then the entire ship is banished from docking at any port...

Considering that it seems to be less harmful to children, does it really make sense to close schools for extended periods? Maybe close for few days for a deep cleaning and make arrangements for workers over say 50 yrs old. Or is the logic that young people cant be trusted to not touch one another and generally be hygienic? Closing schools already puts pressure on other sectors and services and may even put those others areas at risk.

Basically I'm wondering are schools, especially colleges where people are supposedly smart and informed, don't seem like they're that much prone to spreading this disease than church services, the gym or the grocery store.

Respiratory medication supply issues - Trying to avoid using their "panic" headline

Quote:

On Thursday pharmaceutical manufacturer AmeriSource Bergen sent to its pharmacists a list of respiratory medications that it's placing on back order because they are in short supply, The Post has learned.

The $168 billion publicly traded company flagged nebulizer solutions and two types of generic respiratory medications used for asthma and other breathing disorders, sources said. The Valley Forge, Pa.-based company did not return requests for comment.
If you or a loved one needs these, please get a reasonable supply now.

Quote:

Drug supplier Anda Inc., meanwhile, warned its pharmacists about low levels of respiratory drugs and inhalers, as well as antibiotics, alcohol prep pads, face masks and hand sanitizers. Privately held Adna also did not return requests for comment.

Their outreach was intended to encourage pharmacy customers to place orders now for items that may not be available in the near future, Tom D'Angelo owner of Franklin Square Pharmacy told The Post.

Have you considered flying space A with the military? You are active duty- so you would have one of the higher categories. I know it's iffy with leave, but you could try and then do a one way back to where you need to go. Where are you taking leave from? You can look at Rota's space A page. If you need more info, you can PM me.

I find cruising to be fine for the most part but being stuck on a ship involuntarily for an extra two weeks sounds like hell. Its not you have access to the pool, movies at night and soft serve machines. And then you get stuck with the crap pizza and chicken tenders. Ugh.

I need someone to explain something to me. If this has a lower death rate than flu (or even rightly the same), if it's nothing really to worry about, then why are we cancelling all these events like concerts and business conventions? Why are companies canceling air travel? Why did univ of Washington shut down. I don't remember anything getting shutdown in any past event like SARS, h1n1 or whatever.

Either Karens are causing mass panic or we are not being told what is happening.

So Spain is spreading at 1.35 rate to total cases per day.
Applied to US we will be at around 1500 cases next week. At the China rate we will be at around 4000 cases. Will try to do some other baselines...

Death rate is somewhere from 10-30x higher than flu among the older segments of population
Hospitalization rate is also much higher than flu even for younger populations
No immunity
Severely limited testing
Longer incubation period and can be spread asymptomatically

It really doesn't matter that the symptoms are mild among younger people. The problem we're trying to avoid is widespread infection, which will happen when it spreads throughout classrooms to parents and beyond. At that point, the elderly will be at risk whenever they go out to get groceries / meds / etc. If we can't stop the spread of the disease (which will likely require dramatic efforts given the apparent transmissibility of the virus), we're going to end up losing a good chunk of our senior population.

Pj's chart is misleading. That's not the rate the virus is spreading. It's the number of new cases discovered. Those "new" cases could be people that have had the virus for several days or a couple of weeks.

I suspect it is out of an abundance of caution and I don't agree with the assertion that it is the same or less deadly compared to the flu. It's a no win situation unfortunately. You either react appropriately by cancelling events (which prevents further spread and gets people pissed at the overreaction and panic) or you don't until it really gets bad at which point people are yelling about the government and companies not doing enough.

The CFR/IFR is not the metric which is causing some of us the greatest concern. I've stated before that could be zero, as in you R0 (are naught) gonna die from this, and I would still be equally concerned.

The problem with the COVID-19 bug is that it's saving throw vs. a trip to the hospital is rolled on a d10 rather than a d100 like the flu and others. In other words, it's sending people to the ICU in numbers that are very concerning in a disease that has it's apparent infectious rate.
