Yes, we know. Don't trust the WHO, but trust some off shot conspiracy theorists website that is convinced we didn't land on the moon either.

Some of y'all are absolutely insufferable and will believe nothing that can be taken as progress or good news.

Oooh, which off shot conspirator are we trusting today?

We did go to the moon though, i have proof sitting in my desk.
Not to derail, but what kind of proof?

If you look at the S Korea chart, the number of new cases peaked last week, about month and half after the contagion started.
This is a developed country model that should apply to US unless we completely botch things.

So far the US response is MUCH worse than South Korea.

an effective anti-viral would go along way. Tami Flu has done a lot to lessen the flu over the last few years hopefully they can find something that helps for covid 19

When NYC blows up with cases will companies require 14 day work from home for employees returning from there like they are for employees returning from some countries?
Received a screenshot from a friend who works in midtown manhattan today of a survey sent out by their employer (large public multinational firm) asking employees how long they could work from home right now, what equipment they would need to be able to WFH for 2 weeks, and who their responsibilities could be transferred too if they couldn't work.

So, yep, sounds like at least some are preparing for the possibility of shutting down entire departments regardless of travel/exposure.

Haha I can only imagine the replies.

How long? Forever

What do I need? Nothing at all, especially not a laptop or telecom equipment.

Who could responsibilities be transferred to? No one. I'm the only one who can do my job.

For those who don't go to the article, it is not referring to the potential case in Austin.

It is about the case in Ft. Bend County.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

this thing is just an economic bomb

it's like a cross between 9/11 and 2008. all the paranoia and demand subsidence of 9/11 and the agonizingly slow required unwind of 2008. it's not as catastrophic as either, but it combines some of the worst economic aspects of both.

i just struggle to understand what would constitute an all clear

will it require multiple waves with decreasing epidemic peaks? will it require a vaccine? eventually enough people get the mild case such that we have sufficient herd immunity and the outbreaks aren't as far reaching and severe. but we don't want that to happen too quickly because it'll overwhelm things and result in unacceptable deaths over a short period of time (making the economic chaos even worse).

this is a real deal global crisis

Pretty sure the societal "all clear" will revolve around the mass distribution and administration of a viable CV-19 vaccine.

CDC Bungling of Test Kits

Quote:

The rollout of a CDC-designed test kit to state and local labs has become a fiasco because it contained a faulty reagent. Labs around the country eager to test more suspected casesand test them fasterhave been unable to do so. No commercial or state labs have the approval to use their own tests.
Quote:

If a new disease emerges, CDC normally "gets the ball rolling" with diagnostics because it has the expertise and the biosafety laboratories to handle dangerous novel pathogens, says Borio, who now works for In-Q-Tel, a not-for-profit venture capital firm. Typically, there are few confirmed viral samples from patients at the outset, which researchers need to validate their tests, and CDC has the capability to grow the virus for this critical quality assurance step. Once the agency has a working test, that goes out to state labs. Then, in a third phase, commercial labs take over and either produce their own tests or scale-up the CDC one. "I would have hoped to see that third phase by now," Borio says.
Quote:

In the case of SARS-CoV-2, as the virus causing COVID-19 is officially known, CDC's sluggishness was apparent 1 month ago. On 26 January, the agency held an unusual Sunday teleconference for the media to provide an update about the rapidly growing outbreak. There were then five cases in the United States, but the CDC lab in Atlanta was still the only one in the country able to test for the virus, and it repeatedly had backlogs. Asked why more labs weren't able to do the tests, Nancy Messonnier, who then was leading CDC's response, said it was a quality issue. "We hold ourselves to an incredibly high standard of precision in terms of laboratory testing," Messonnier said. "We wouldn't want to inadvertently make a mistake in patient care."
Quote:

CDC finally started to send kits to state and local health labs on 5 February. But on 12 February, it revealed that several labs had difficulty validating the test because of a problem with one of the reagents.

The key problem with the kits is what's known as a negative control, says Kelly Wroblewski, director of infectious diseases at the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL). CDC's test uses the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay to find tiny amounts of the SARS-CoV-2 genome in, say, a nose swab. To make sure a test is working properly, kits also include DNA unrelated to SARS-CoV-2. The assay should not react to this negative control, but the CDC reagents did at many, but not all, state labs. The labs where the negative control failed were not allowed to use the test; they have to continue to send their samples to Atlanta.
Quote:

When the United States declared the outbreak a public health emergency on 31 January, a bureaucratic process kicked in that requires FDA's "emergency use approval" for any tests. "The declaration of a public health emergency did exactly what it shouldn't have. It limited the diagnostic capacity of this country," Mina says. "It's insane."
Lots of bureaucratic screwups.

We also noticed that the only Asian donor (male) has a much higher ACE2-expressing cell ratio than white and African American donors (2.50% vs. 0.47% of all cells). This might explain the observation that the new Coronavirus pandemic and previous SARS-Cov pandemic are concentrated in the Asian area.

This non-peer reviewed research suggests (via very limited sampling) that Asians may be more susceptible.
