A really good friend of mine in town is going with her extended family, 18 in all, next weekend on a cruise. The mom has been making all of them take Vitamin c, elderberry syrup, and zinc for the last few weeks.

She also has three boxes of gloves and two of masks for the trip. My friend is convinced her mom is going to come back with a tan with white hands and a mask outline

Ebola is also a terrifying disease. COVID-19, while dangerous, doesn't liquify you from the inside out and kill 60%+ of its patients.

I have been told that pregnant women are at higher risk (similar to the elderly) and it is possible for vertical transmission (transmission of the disease to the fetus).

If you look at the S Korea chart, the number of new cases peaked last week, about month and half after the contagion started.
This is a developed country model that should apply to US unless we completely botch things.

this thing is just an economic bomb

it's like a cross between 9/11 and 2008. all the paranoia and demand subsidence of 9/11 and the agonizingly slow required unwind of 2008. it's not as catastrophic as either, but it combines some of the worst economic aspects of both.

i just struggle to understand what would constitute an all clear

will it require multiple waves with decreasing epidemic peaks? will it require a vaccine? eventually enough people get the mild case such that we have sufficient herd immunity and the outbreaks aren't as far reaching and severe. but we don't want that to happen too quickly because it'll overwhelm things and result in unacceptable deaths over a short period of time (making the economic chaos even worse).

That does not appear to be the case. Men appear to be at a higher risk and at a higher risk for complications. This is also likely due to the split in behavior (smoking for instance) between men and women where outbreaks have occurred. Doesn't mean it's true, but that's what we've seen so far in the very early part of whatever this is.
