Sorry if you like him. I voted for him too. IMO he doesn't have the personality for this kind of issue. Fighting political fights yes. Handling fast moving situation that requires tact and delicate use of language, not so much.

Patton was a great fierce general on the front lines. Ike was a master strategist w political acumen. Both great men and great at the job in front of them. But switch the roles and you get completely different outcomes.

Trump is Patton. This situation requires Eisenhower type.

Howabout we start a political coronavirus thread.

Really tired of you showing up to b*tch about Trump every page.

Let's keep this focused on news please.
I mean obviously we would be better with Biden, he would speak in circles so much and probably call it an Ebola pandemic so we would all get confused and forget Covid-19 us even a thing. Maybe corn-pop can fight the virus with his chain but hopefully his sister wife doesnt get infected....But I mean I think he is actually running for Senate anyways so not sure he is the face we need leading the fight either

I have some experience with it. The biggest problem is, after the development of the vaccines, doing the clinical trials takes a ton of time. Drug trials have to be done to determine how effective they are and how much negative / harmful effects do they cause. That takes time. I strongly believe that it will take us at least 18 months to develop an effective vaccine to this virus. In China, a vaccine could probably be made sooner since they could bypass ethics in testing procedures that our medical personnel would have to follow.

Does anyone else think it would be helpful to have a separate thread that strictly discusses steps we can take as individuals to mitigate our families' risk and prepare for possible healthy or sick self-quarantine?

There is a fair amount of that mixed in on this thread, but such a lengthy news-based thread really isn't useful as a clearinghouse for info about how to manage risks and symptoms.

Probably no human on earth has had any exposure to any portion of this coronavirus that enabled their immune system to produce antibodies against it. Thus, we are at its mercy and hope it doesn't spread like the H1N1 virus did. It may have at least a 15% kill rate in those over 65 with any respiratory problems and a 1% to 3% for all other adults over 30. Hopefully, it will not spread rapidly.

We have very few test kits in the US so we do not have much accurate information on this problem here. No matter, please do not pay any attention to what our POTUS says. Especially, if you have significant flu-like symptoms, please do NOT go to work like the POTUS suggested.

Listen only to the medical experts. PLEASE!
When did he say it is okay to go to work with flu like symptoms? I have a son with the stomach flu, so I haven't watched the news in the last day

"Because a lot of people will have this and it's very mild. ... So if, you know, we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better, just by you know, sitting around and even going to work, some of them go to work, but they get better."

He is talking about 80%+ of the cases being mild and the fact that some people will go to work and be fine. He didn't say they SHOULD go to work.

Trump is always going to try to put the best spin on a situation like this. And his opponents will always try to use his words against him.

Trumps handling has been extremely disappointing and I'm not sure he is fully understanding what can happen here. I've read even yesterday they aren't even screening people coming in from Italy... how is that possible. All flights from Asia should have been shut down immediately.

He didn't at all say it's okay for people to go to work. He's talking about people that have a mild case and don't even realize it, that some of them may even go to work.

A more disciplined speaker would have said that you definitely shouldn't go to work if you have it just to make that point clear, but in no way did he recommend people go to work who have corona.

That's a blatantly misleading statement and people who do that kind of stuff on both sides of the aisle should be called out for it publicly, and especially when trying to score political points in a time of crisis. It's shameful.

Every POTUS follows the playbook that has been in place by the experts to deal with these types of issues. It's basically the same playbook that Bush 43 and Obama followed. The only deviation Trump has had from the playbook is to recommend more strict restrictions on allowing people in the country, something he took political heat for early on. This stance actually was ignored In one instance by a health bureaucrat who's been in place thru multiple administrations.

Trials can move quick when the conditions are right. There's loads of old people in nursing homes probably in the early stages of panic, so recruitment wouldn't need to be a bottleneck. I'm curious how much efficacy can really be warranted. I don't see how it's ethical to run a controlled trial on an infectious disease, especially one with this kind of propensity for severe complications.

Is there a reason that a small stage safety trial can't be implemented, just to show that it isn't causing cytokines storms or something very dangerous, then immediately go into post-marketing like trials? Regulatory decisions are always risk/benefit. For some populations, the risk/benefit makes sense here. I'd worry that manufacturing and distribution are the most problems bottlenecks.

Exactly. The risk is it is more dangerous than the disease or is shown to be clearly useless. Then you have to scale production. I don't see FDA standing in the way absent an alternative.

I said it was a rambling statement, which it was. I didn't say I agreed with the tweet. That was the first video clip I found of the statement, and felt it was very relevant to hear what Trump said rather than go off of other's statements on the matter.

So early on in the US, I think there was an infected person on the verge of death that was given some sort of antiviral as a last ditch effort... which ended up saving the person's life.

In the case of new vaccines, can the same approach be used or is it too late in the process for a vaccine to work at that point?

With their dependence on public transportation, I could see it spreading fairly quickly. That is one thing about Houston. Almost everyone drives

This is where it would be helpful to know a little more about the patients. Is it a 40 year old 480# fatass/diabetic or a 40 year old marathon runner.

My daughter got a prescription for Tamiflu a few weeks ago, before I was really following this. Pharmacist filled an extra bottle with the prescription. Thought it was odd, but maybe they knew something. I'm not sure there's any reason to think it would work, but am thankful to have it just in case.

No. Tamiflu is a monoculture of antibodies for influenza viruses. Basically just floods your body with synthetic antibodies. Won't work on anything other than influenza.

Edit: I am an idiot and this post is incorrect.

Tamiflu is not antibodies. It's an inhibitor that blocks an enzyme used in viral production.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oseltamivir

I don't know if coronaviruses use this mechanism

It will be interesting to see which products have delays, shut downs vs those that make it in easier. Irish is reporting his poultry is making it in. Your apparel is on the board.

I've got a friend w cable assembly/wire harnesses for medical devices that are delayed due to component shortages. Same w a friend in paper and plastic restaurant supplies.
