If you are stocking up for an extended home stay, I might suggest ramen noodles to do it on the cheap.

Best option is pig feed. Same nutritional requirements, dirt cheap. In desperation, why the hell not...?

Here is an email sent from UC-DAVIS Hospital Employees.

Asking them to self-quarantine....can't believe we were just reading about hospital infections in Wuhan just 2-3 weeks ago and here we go...

It's not that it's bad. Just tough as nails on the larger ones

That shouldn't be the case. Test kits for Influenza A and B are cheap and widely available. Test takes about ten minutes with a nose swab.

Can anyone tell me what divergence and mutation means in these layouts?

e.g. Comparing the divergence of the latest UC-Davis Case with some of the original Wuhan Cases listed.

Not a doctor or even a medical type, but I thought part of the issue was determining which portion of the viral RNA or whatever to include in the vaccine? Enough to get antibodies, but not enough to get symptoms. Is that right? So even if you have a novel method of delivery that generates antibodies, wouldn't you still need to do the...guess/check/whatever... to see what the right bit of genetic material is?

Anecdotally:

My children attend a school where a family (child in the same class) has been in Italy for the last month (returning to the states in 2 weeks). The school did not have a plan in place to prevent the child from returning to school.

The school has decided to prevent the child from returning to school for at least 14 days after returning to the states.

We are in San Antonio, fwiw.

Hoping for a serious answer. I'm a bit unnerved about this whole thing, but I'm reluctant to go full blown panic. Does anyone have any links to web forums or other media from pig flu, sars, etc? I'd like to see a comparison to determine if we are overreacting.

I want to know, on average, how many people would likely eventually be infected from one person with Corona Virus flying coach? You come into direct contact with the food/bev cart people, who come into direct contact with probably 3/4 of the plain. Not looking good for the people directly next to you. I prob won't be flying for a while...

I went out and bought some minimal supplies as a precaution for a possible rush on items. I am not losing sleep On Corona but I know herd mentality. I'd rather buy things I needed anyway and get ahead of a rush on the HEB.

Do you want worms, or coronavirus? a lot of the big fat hogs may have some parasites during the hot nasty part of the year. younger ones should be fine. Soak them in brine and then cook them.

Transmission of airborne diseases on commercial aircraft has been shown to be very low due to the air circulation system's HEPA filters. This has been true for the flu, SARS, MERS, etc.

Im not worried about spread on the flight itself. But bringing in new potential carriers into the country from countries know to have an active outbreak.

Sheesh. Too close to home. Hopefully protocol for limited quarantine procedures (individual travelers, as needed basis) will be defined for similar situations soon. I live in New Braunfels and work in Austin so any appearance of heightened risk along the Austin to San Antonio portion of the I-35 corridor will certainly get my attention.

My work sent out a memo saying people sick should stay home. No one is sick but they sent it anyways. It's called CYA.

The doom n gloom rumors will spread faster because no one wants to look bad.

This is a serious issue that is going to cause some significant economic damage and maybe help tip some countries into a recession, but pandemics have happened before and will happen again.

Civilization is not going to end, your lights are going to stay on, your TV is going to continue to work, and your internet will continue to exist so that you can post your thoughts on a site like TexAgs for years to come. Humanity is a tough species and will adapt, we're basically like ants. This virus will imbed itself in the community and over time immunizations and better treatments will come out and this will be just another thing on the long list that people sometimes get. People thinking of hoarding or going to those extremes, I got bad news for you. Your U.S. Federal Income Tax Return is still going to be due by April 15th.

Obviously, some people have been and will be directly affected by this, and thoughts and prayers to those who actually get serious ill or even pass away. That is of course terrible. Others are having to deal with no doubt very frustrating situations such as being quarantined, blocked from traveling somewhere, and so forth.

The odds of any one person getting personally getting sick from this even if a full blown pandemic is probably going to be lower than not getting it. The Swine Flu in 2009 infected an estimated 61 million Americans. So you had about a 1 in 5 chance of getting H1N1 when that pandemic happened.

Even though the majority of people in the world will not be infected by this virus, economically, whether from higher prices, a hit in the stock portfolio, supply chain disruptions, etc. and perhaps travel plans for some, most of the world will be affected in that way in big or small ways.

Glad I'm out of the market, aside from 401k. My hope is that this is all overblown, it doesn't spread like wildfire here, and that some good buying opportunities are presented in the coming weeks/months.

But can't this be spread pretty easily by physical contact? Think about how many people you come into contact with indirectly through the flight attendants passing our snacks/drinks and taking trash. The person who was just sitting in your seat and putting their hands all over your fold down tray on the last flight etc. I'd think the Virus would have to be pretty resilient to live on a coke can or napkin for more than just a few seconds, but isn't this one supposed to be?

I was responding to Boo's question about spreading it on the aircraft.

Any flight could in theory bring someone who is infected. No way to be sure unless they're already showing symptoms, which should keep them off the flight. If it was me, I would have banned all flights from Italy and all travelers who have been to Italy and Iran regardless of where their flight originated. If we need to bring Americans home, we can do the same thing we did with China. Fly them out on those 747s and stick their butts in isolation.

True, but it is MUCH worse if they give it to just 1-2 of their neighbors on a flight than if they are sole carriers.

The problem is not the airplane, it's the airport itself. You're in close proximity to many other people for a long period of time before the flight with many people touching your stuff during security and bag checks.
