I sure as heck wouldn't self report minor symptoms which may ultimately be a coronavirus infection knowing what will be in store for you. Yeah, you can't trust the numbers, though I'd still say overall the fatality rate will skew overall lower as the under reported mild or asymptomatic cases would be not reported in far greater rate than the severe cases which would force people to seek medical attention.
Especially in China! In all honesty I'd be tempted to hunker down at home until I knew this wasn't just the sniffles. That's probably the same for pretty much everyone, otherwise hospitals and dr's offices would be flooded with people with the common cold and whatever else right now.

The first time this made the rounds most of us (me included) dismissed it outright, because it seemed inconceivable that someone in her position would be stupid enough to send these texts.

I'm having second thoughts now, but I still think it is fake because I feel like the news would have leaked if there were already thousands of cases 10 days ago.
Yep. Too many people involved to be able to keep a secret like this. Someone would've talked and then it's out.

That's fine and all, but there's been no evidence to support this idea. In fact, just the opposite as the WHO and others have stated there not a larger pool of mild cases that have gone unreported.

The WHO , based on their looking in China and coupled with efforts from South Korea and Singapore, are NOT finding a large number of unreported cases (i.e. people who have it but only mildly and therefore haven't sought medical attention)

The hope has been that these types of cases were widespread, thus lowering the seriousness of COVID-19. Unfortunately, this isn't appearing to hold up.

83 people under observation. You might think they'd be testing them all since they are concerned enough to keep them under observation. Nope, they are only testing six.

Has there been confirmed person to person transmission in the US? Most cases in the US were picked up on overseas travel.

15 cases that were not evacuated from anywhere. But I think 14 where either associated with travel or close contact (family)

In that case it hasn't really yet lost containment that we can observe within the US.

And how many hops were those cases from an international traveler?

By the numbers no. We also have not been testing. I would say we do not have a clue where we are at. Could be fine, could be spreading.

~400 tests that the CDC has conducted is not enough to know for sure.

There are two cases that have been classified as person-to-person. The rest are direct from China or evacuees from the cruise ship.

the latest numbers I see right now...

81172 cases
2768 dead
30,258 recovered

so its looking more like the fatality rate is around 8%

Those are worldwide numbers.

I believe I read somewhere the annual numbers for influenza in the US alone are;
-200,000 infected
-35,000 fatalities

edit forgot to type fatalities after 35,000

That doesn't sound right for annual influenza in the US alone anyone have accurate numbers?
The flu in the US numbers are in the millions. Deaths caused from the flu or complications brought on by it range anywhere from 10,000 to 80,000 in 2018.
Thanks for the response.

Yes
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

There is also a the possibility that case 15 reported today is local. When Azar says epidemiology is ongoing it worries me a little. Seems there is no CLEAR point of infection.

I believe that is the case, yes. To be honest, I'm starting to lose track of what I've seen where... but I think those are the numbers direct from the CDC.

No!

It's time to diligently prepare, plan and monitor. Steadily stock up on supplies, talk with friends and family, continue to pay attention so that your not a victim of the panic.

unless you are in the grocery business, then you should be buying max inventory ahead of the panic so after the first shelf wipe out, you can reload shelves quickly.
