This is an RNA virus like HIV, correct?

I'm worried it isn't necessarily "like the flu" ... what if it causes slow but chronic damage to organs and body systems and lessens life span in those that don't die suddenly?

Anyone seeing data to disprove this fear?

On a similar note... what if it makes your pecker fall off? Has anyone seen data to disprove that fear?

Y'all do know that we discussed that this virus can cause sterility...swollen balls...may or may not fall off.

The issue for me is that, compared to swine flu for instance, no one did **** to contain it really. No major quarantines, economic shut downs, travel bans, welding people in towers, temporary detainment centers, military mobilizations, etc. even when it infected 60 million people and killed 300k.

I certainly paid no attention to it.

This one has a response orders of magnitude more drastic.

Therefore those making those calls, who are quarantining not only people but information as well, believe this will be orders of magnitude worse than 60 mil/300k dead.

Thats the disturbing but only logical conclusion.

So if we're not careful, this could legitimately kill more people than the 150 million people gunned down since 2007?

If the world didn't miss the first 150 million lost I doubt they'll miss the next 150 million either.

We're testing the route of overcompensating in the social media era by presuming the worst in many cases and rapidly spreading attention getting negative news. There are positive news items in there too I am sure but due to human nature they are less interesting and motivate us less. Humans are wired to pay attention to threats.

There is a danger in being incautious, and a different danger in overreacting.

If a vaccine is not found this thing is going to be a real problem in the US starting in the late fall of 2020. I would guess the warmer more humid weather cuts it way back similarly the way flu goes back into its hole.

It will be interesting to see what happens in colder Southern hemisphere regions May - Oct.

This has had unprecedented response in the vaccine. Something like 1/4 the time for SARS. The challenge is going to be keeping up the tempo, especially if the rates start to decline.

A vaccine will not be in play until a year from now at the earliest.

Phase 1 trial will start in less than 2 months which will be the fastest ever for any vaccine.

Any predictions on what Trump will say?

If he sticks with the story that everything is ok and there is no transmission going on in the USA and he is proved incorrect within a few days that is going to be bad for him.

the latest numbers I see right now...

so its looking more like the fatality rate is around 8%

Those are worldwide numbers.

I believe I read somewhere the annual numbers for influenza in the US alone are;
-200,000 infected
-35,000 fatalities

edit forgot to type fatalities after 35,000

That doesn't sound right for annual influenza in the US alone anyone have accurate numbers?

New article: What should the World do now?

Quote:

Some countries may decide it's better not to impede the free flow of people too much, keep schools and businesses open, and forgo the quarantining of cities. "That's quite a big decision to make with regards to public health," Dye says, "because essentially, it's saying, 'We're going to let this virus go.'"

To prepare for what's coming, hospitals can stockpile respiratory equipment and add beds. More intensive use of the vaccines against influenza and pneumococcal infections could help reduce the burden of those respiratory diseases on the health care system and make it easier to identify COVID-19 cases, which produce similar symptoms. Governments can issue messages about the importance of handwashing and staying home if you're ill.

lol. yes, china, the authoritarian regime in history most concerned with saving face, keeping their economy running smoothly, preventing social disturbances, mobilized their military, locked 10% of the world's population in their homes, shut down their businesses, ports, and airports, and shut off their internet and phone service worldwide, because they're 'virtue signaling.'

that is not a logical conclusion.

and by the way, the only decadent, stupid, countries that are living off the remnants of their better forefathers, such as the US and western europe, do things like - 'virtue signaling'

china is a corrupt, dishonest ****hole, but they act in their own best interest. and this is not in their best interest unless it looks like the only way to prevent another revolution or worse catastrophe.

PS - 900,000 people die in china per month, NORMALLY. so what does it take to freak out and forcibly shut down their entire country? something more than 'just a flu' i suspect.

He's going to say that we have the greatest and best people working on it, and that it is under control in the U.S. He'll promise that we will not stop working until we have vaccine (or more likely "cure"), and that the best thing you can do is continue working in the greatest country in the world.

I think he'll say something to the effect of:

"we're doing great...better than any other country....no big lockdowns....etc" and follow it up with "follow the advice of the CDC and state/federal officials".

The flu in the US numbers are in the millions. Deaths caused from the flu or complications brought on by it range anywhere from 10,000 to 80,000 in 2018.

China postures and virtue signals all the time. WTF? They posture all the time...to their own people more than to the external world.

But here's just one enormous example that affects us all. They are pretending to care about "global warming" by making a few highly visible examples of use of solar and wind....meanwhile they open hundreds of coal fired electrical plants a year. They are investing hundreds of billlions in coal. And they negotiated their way out of having to provide resources to less wealthy countries supporting the Paris Treat.
