Not surprisingly, CDC says be prepared for school cancellations and be prepared to work from home.

This is going to be a huge economic disruption.
I've been worrying about this. More than the owners and other guys at work. As plumbers, we can't work from home and will likely be cut-off early on. I'm sure house-to-house service tech jobs will be curtailed very early in any quarantine situation.

I tried to stress for them to be prepared to miss work for an extended period. I was pretty much blown off.

When will we start testing more people and how many cases will it take for the CDC to be concerned?

That's what I'm doing, it's just hurricane shopping early. I'd be buying this stuff anyway in June.

Lol,

This conversation is hilarious.

CDC has not idea what is going on. They are not testing, and need more test kits from other countries.

Earlier she said the CDC had tested over 400 samples last night.

Wide spread testing is still at least 2 weeks away because of the snafu with the early test kits.

Right now 12 different places are able to test locally. She didn't say how many states that included but a couple of days ago a news report named 3 states.

Is it possible the CDC isn't testing because they know the kits are useless? Maybe we'll see in uptick in testing once they're comfortable the kits are actually doing what they're supposed to.

I'm with you. I wonder what percent of people can really work from home. My guess is 30-40%. If people in the natural gas, coal, refineries, power, water treatment, Fire, police, EMS, healthcare quit going to work we will have problems.

How many here will be forced to stay home if schools close? If schools close, daycare should close too. There goes a good percentage of the workforce.

My guess is the CDC isn't testing because who are you going to test? I haven't heard of people in the US showing up at doctors or hospitals with symptoms of this.

Here. I can do a fair amount of work from home, but I am to a degree tied to our production system at least until my local transfer hits. The new assignment I'm less sure about but I'd imagine it's possible.

Since I'm a single parent I'm already under the assumption that my kids will get it and day care will close. I'll probably catch it as well. My parents are the ones I'm actually concerned about since mom had pneumonia earlier this year and I think dad had it last year. He has three broken ribs from coughing so hard that to my knowledge aren't healed.

There are over 360,000 Chinese students in the U.S. What percentage went to China during the Christmas break and returned infected?

Hopefully most returned before the big rise in infections in Wuhan.

The tone has finally changed I see. Looks like this one is real. Containment has failed utterly, as most of us knew it would. We are a true global community of BILLIONS. You aren't gonna lock it down. Far too little, far too late. As expected really. And with an incubation period that long, it was inevitable. We were probably doomed before this thing even had a name.

So, this is happening. I don't think anyone here can argue that anymore. Even the naysayers. The fight now will be against the scale of it. The lethality of it is not Ebola bad, but absolute numbers could still be high after all said and done. We can mitigate to an extent but this thing is in what, 20+ countries now? Most of which have limited or zero containment themselves?

The problem with things like this is that there is an irrational view of pandemics. We hear the word and think Hollywood movie doomsday stuff. People turning into mush in the streets kinda thing. Not gonna happen with this one. Let's stay grounded in reality.

What WILL happen is another consequence of the global community. The economy. We Americans are horribly blind and take our economic machine for granted. Mainly the supply network. This may be the first thing to truly disrupt our daily standard of living in generations. This is what I am worried about. That and the absolute cost to our healthcare that would ensue if even only 1% of our populace gets it.

These are my truths as I see them. I do also think our government is more prepared/preparing and taking this more seriously than they are letting on. Still probably not enough to stop us from hurting though. I got to be part of a gubment think tank years ago and it truly opened my eyes to some very harsh realities.

Does Sam's sell any relevant meds? I'm there this afternoon and would like to prevent dragging the kids along to additional places.

Ya, they have pain relievers, nasal and chest congestants, etc. Get meds to treat symptoms since it's a virus. Chances are you'll have a really bad flu type sickness, so you just want to avoid being miserable since meds will be gone and hospitals will be overcrowded and not treating mild cases anyway. We got food items just to avoid having to go to crowded grocery stores.

Yeah you're buying hurricane supplies anyway. I'd add some vitamins and immune boosters to the lists and maybe be a little heavier on canned fruits and veggies.

I would buy the premade cold and flu severe stuff. It's already formulated for the closest thing we can get to the COV over the counter.

Mucinex, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, hand sanitizer, etc. are sold there. Buy toilet paper, canned tuna and chicken, canned vegetables, also.

Gotcha. Shouldn't be a big deal since I'm picking up a quarterly refill prescription and my annual hurricane non perishables anyway. Like I said, I have a 1.5 and almost 4 year old so I'm assuming everyone will catch it. Might as well pick up stuff now from somewhere I'll already be.

The big challenge will keeping myself from raiding the Doritos. You always need Doritos, you know.

Italy now at 322 positive cases, 3/4 as many as the US has even tested. We aren't testing nearly enough.
