Let's talk about what we can actually do, in our own homes. Besides stocking up on food and "hurricane preps", what could we buy now that we'll wish we had later?

My 77 year old mother in law lives in Assisted Living. If this thing hits in my town (if it's not already here) I'll go pull her out of there and bring her to my house. If she comes down with pneumonia like symptoms and hospitals are over run, what could I do for her at home?

What medicines could I buy now? What can I learn now that would be helpful? How can I protect the rest of my family?

Numbers of cases stresses me out. Taking positive actions calms me.

No tinfoil hats, just seeking advice.

.

Disappointing but not concerning. They probably had no guidance initially to take proper protective precautions, and given the situation they've been exposed to the virus to the tune of several orders or magnitude more than any normal person would be.

I saw a video from some doctor talking about just how important sleep can be to boosting your immunity to viral infections. If that's true, I would think that emergency medical personnel are at higher risk given their propensity to have little to no sleep every night.

First place to start would be over the counter DayQuil/NyQuil cold and flu. Liquid or pill, your choice. This would only help treat a mild case. I would also want to have individual meds like Tylenol to help relieve pain/fever. Maybe electrolytes like Gatorade and pedialite.

If you wanted to buy a cheap pulse/oxymeter, that would be helpful in saying when the hospital trip needs to start. It would tell you when oxygen in the blood starts to drop due of lungs not functioning well. Above 95% is generally considered ok depending on normal lung function for the individual.

I would buy some sanitation products like germX and chlorox wipes, some masks to help keep spread down a bit. Some masks if you can happen to find some

A concentrator is actually a great idea. She has been on oxygen in the past so it's likely that she'll need it again at some point in her life anyway.

I don't think there is anything you can do outside of good hygiene and hand washing when living day to day. Try to not touch your face. I have taken to wiping down my desk and door knob daily in my office due to the flu season anyhow.

Make sure you have prescription medications for your mother in law and your family.

I'm a planner and somewhat prepper by nature. I try to have a six month supply health & beauty normally. The only steps I have taken are to beefing up my toliet paper stockpile (necessity! I'm not living through a pandemic without tp), making sure I have a six month supply of products I normally use day to day (since supply shortages will happen with China shut down), and getting a few extras at the store for the pantry and freezer when grocery shopping.

As far as I know nothing you do is going to prevent, just prepare the best you can.

Elderberry is a natural antiviral remedy. I would start with that until remdesivir is approved for use in the general public.

Start practicing not touching your face with your hands. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. Use scented hand sanitizer, if for nothing else to remind you not to touch your face.

Zinc is antiviral. I don't know how truly effective it is but it has some effect. I'd stock up a little on effective drugs for respiration. True Pseudoephedrine HCL (not too much or they assume you are a meth cooker), sinus inhalation misters, expectorants. There will be a run on these both globally and nationally as this thing goes off the chain.

From reading their list it seems like a natural disaster/hurricane preparedness list.

So just shop and prepare for hurricane season year round I suppose.
that article downplays the use of masks, says they are basically worthless. I disagree. If your face is covered, you are not going to touch it with your hands.

I've got a big trip to Italy planned for the beginning of May. Florence and Naples. I'm super worried now that it's going to get cancelled, and I'm going to be SOL on the in-country stuff that I've booked.

We will be there in June. Let us know how your trip goes! Seriously we aren't changing anything - let's see what March looks like.

Honeymoon May 30-June 6 over there as well. I'll be watching out. Not cancelling that for anything short of a travel ban.

Plus even during normal flu season I'm constantly washing and or sanitizing my hands.

I'm scheduled for a 20 day trip to Thailand in June. Not planning on canceling as of now but starting to get nervous. I have a friend that teaches in China and has relocated to Thailand temporarily while her school in Shenzhen is closed (there is a sister school there that will allow her child to attend).

Apparently, there is talk that all of the schools in Thailand will be closing in the next few weeks.

or go buy some Bronkaid or Primatene - Ephedrine and Guaifenesin
but yeah, have your DL ready

also if you have a walgreens nearby I recommend their Generic "Wal-act" which is the original drug formula from the 1958 product Actifed... pseudoephedrine hydrochloride 60 mg as the nasal decongestant and triprolidine hydrochloride 2.5 mg - It WILL make you Drowsy.... but kills sinus headaches.

"Actifed was included in the standard medical kit aboard the United States Apollo missions, and was used during Apollo 7 and Apollo 12 when crew members developed head cold symptoms"

Democrats are desperate right now. They will try to exploit anything to hurt Trump, facts are irrelevant.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Rapidly evolving and spreading.

Names a few of the countries from the last few days.

Meets 2 of the criteria for the pandemic - only thing missing is worldwide spread.

Restricted travel into the United States.

Travel notices changing almost daily.

Goal is to slow the introduction of the virus into the US to buy time.

So far has been successful. Will become harder and harder - ultimately we expect community spread within our borders. Only question is how many will have severe illness.

No medications approved to treat it at this time.

Goal is to delay community spread while limiting local impact.

Blah blah, that was enough for me. No new information

EDIT: I stayed on - rest of the call is talking about what people can do to be better prepared for a pandemic here in the United States. Schools closing, etc. Sounds like they are ramping up.

Well, reading this little piece on Iran's containment strategy should make everyone feel much better...
Quote:

Unlike in Italy, Iranian officials are refusing to impose quarantines in areas affected by the outbreak. They say quarantines are old-fashioned and that they do not believe in them.

The Shia shrines in the cities of Qom and Mashhad are still open, despite Qom being a hotbed of the virus.

There are grand ayatollahs in Qom who believe that its shrine, which attracts millions of pilgrims from around the world, and its important seminary, which hosts many foreign religious students, are the pride of the Shia world.

Shutting them down would be a huge step for the clerics and not one that they would be likely take unless they come under international pressure.

We can see the clear conflict between religious fundamentalism and science.

Iran also lacks the medical equipment it needs to help contain the outbreak. It has run out of masks and does not have enough testing kits.

A number of medical workers have also been infected, so there is a worry that they will soon run out of doctors and nurses to attend to those with the disease.

The majority of Iranians are extremely worried.

This. It's likely already here already and we're just not looking or finding it from other respiratory cases. I'm reading between the lines there, but that seemed to be the inference that should be made. I would bet it gets here and then when it starts infecting health care workers in a cluster is when we'll be alerted to it.

It's probably too late to stop the spread. Maybe.
