Give me a freakin break!! Guess it would be better if the POTUS says nothing to worry about like Xi in China?? Or maybe just silence? Or maybe tell everyone to quarantine and don't go in public ( a little mass hysteria anyone)??

then you haters have other "experts" to tell us how wrong each of these positions are!!

What we all knew would happen, happened. Not quarantined long enough, not properly quarantined. Probably transported with others and has passed it along by now. The long incubation period seems to be what is making this virus so hard to contain.

Know what this tells me? The tests for the virus are about worthless. This is the 234958702435 time that we have heard about an infected person testing negative, and then later testing positive.

Hand in hand with being asymptomatic yet being able to spread it around to others.

What helps it to be so infectious is also good news - 80%+ of the people who get it experience mild or no symptoms at all.

Yep, this is simply not containable due to all kinds of reasons. Again, it's just a matter of when this is coming to most places and the only question is the severity/impacts from health and social to economic.

20% serious with a lot of people sick will over run healthcare systems and tons of work/life interruptions still. Will just have to see how it unfolds

That is consistent with his tone and demeanor but does not downplay or overhype the issue.
Not bad. I just hope we are putting plans in overdrive. The test kit fiasco has put a large dent in my belief that our CDC can handle this situation. There are still too many people in government that would prefer the world burn rather than Trump succeed.

He's pretty much damned if he does and damned if he doesn't say anything. It's an awful position to be in and an extremely difficult scenario to be thrown into.

We will see how well he handles this going forward. There are all types of leadership styles and methods. He has his strengths and weaknesses. I don't think he has it in him to be a good leader during a major crisis. Fighting back against opponents, yes, dealing with rapidly changing complex/complicated situations without being polarizing and not shooting from the cuff, not so much. That's just my opinion.

Balanced reporting. Media reporting should be balanced and contextualised, disseminating evidence-based information and helping combat rumour and misinformation that could lead to stigmatisation.

That is identity politics social "science" garbage interfering with and distracting from the proper and efficient execution of strategies to deal with a life or death matter. In that light, it is almost sociopathic to focus on such irrelevancy.

Agreed. I think you will see that the % of serious won't be as high in a place like the United States but I expect it to certainly put a strain on our system.

I agree "What should Trump say"? We expect a wave of death soon? This guy obviously hates Trump.

Trump is at the doorstep of a really positive trip. There is most likely much anxiety since India is close to China.....if I was in Trump shoes I would have the same thing. It is clearly a comment that captures a snap shot of the moment. Any other dark speculation is just speculation.

These freakin people deserve to suffer another 4 years of Trump.

I have my tinfoil hat on right now. So if you don't want to participate in my thought experiment move on and save yourself the frustration...

If this is going to spread through the US. Is there an advantage to being a patient while the system is still operational? If you come down with it last, after the system is overwhelmed your care will suffer drastically.

A few reasons this would not necessarily be true is we don't know much about re-infection. You could get it , recover and then be infected again possibly. It appears there could be long term effects of the virus not fully understood.

This is NOT something I'm seriously considering doing, but it makes sense on some levels. Just a thought experiment.

If new drugs, vaccines, or treatments are developed, you are not going to take advantage of them.

Self-quarantine for 27 days is not going to be fun, either.

Someone I know said if it shows up here, he is going to go kiss a Chinese girl so he can get the virus before the system gets overwhelmed.

Meh, they are covering the bases. Lat spring during the measles epidemic on the East Coast, there were some incidents of people assaulting Orthodox groups who were out in public. People such as yourself who can think rationally i.e. 'not every person from X country is contagious' is not to whom this would be directed anyway. It's to remind the media/healthcare communicators that not everyone is smart enough to figure that out.

As far as the spread in the US, flights are still going and coming from countries such as Italy and China so including those already here who are stricken, its only a matter of time before it spreads. The elderly seem to be the most afflicted, so if nursing homes and elder facilities have awareness, then hopefully the impact will not be overwhelming. Just depends upon how well communities can contain it. It's a shame the CDC/Global budget was trimmed but it looks like they are going to pump some money back into it to address the issue.

Hard to strike a balance between inducing panic and ensuring precautions are taken, so thank you to those medical personnel on the front lines.

I was gonna call it a Corona Party.

Even the healthy people in China are in 27day lockdown anyway. The drug thing definitely makes sense, but no telling what time those will arrive.

Again, I'm not doing this, but right now the system is working at peak efficiency.

I would be wary of a vaccine that has not been test on others first, especially if they get reinfected.
