Would be very interested in knowing the underlying stats here. I have to assume that the 2-4% in Wuhan reflects either very delayed, non-existent, or insufficient treatment and that the 0.7% is much closer to what properly treated cases reflect.

Maybe or it could be a timing lag. Would be good to see how many deaths are from pneumonia that happened because the patient had the corona virus. Seems like the deaths are caused from pneumonia like symptoms.

Yes, as complicated cases play out, and people die lingering pneumonic deaths.

The first scattering of cases can be properly treated. Eventually proper ER and hospitals get overwhelmed and things balloon out of control and there are not enough oxygen concentrators or ER beds or trained doctors and nurses to go around.

Again: Is the early data still holding up indicating that the vast majority of deaths are the elderly and those with preexisting medical conditions?

So far but again getting reliable data has been difficult. As we see the spiraling cases in SKorea, Japan, and Italy I think we'll get a much better feeling for the data. I would suspect you'll also see a very high correlation of malnutrition to deaths in places like Iran, Pakistan, Africa and so forth as well.

I heard a rumor at dinner that this was making the rounds in Italy and we very well may be going there in the near future. I had been following this thread daily while we were in port but it took me over 5 minutes to make this post. I appreciate it.

Okay, popping in for a minute.

On the city in CA asking for the block-- what happened was this. Travis AFB is only housing the evacuees, and are not involved with anything else. The CDC and HHS are the ones in charge. I am following one of the evacuees on Instagram. She posted a letter that was passed out. Basically, the CDC said if anyone tested positive and showed symptoms they go to hospital. If they test positive and have no symptoms they have to be removed from the base and relocated. The irony is that they gave people a choice about testing. The person I'm following decided against it because she didn't want to be relocated. She said she will test if she starts feeling ill. I'm pretty sure the other evacuees that were released had to be swabbed and test negative before they were let go. I'm assuming same for this group. So while optional now, it won't be for release. But I'm just guessing there.

On my trip to Italy in 2 weeks. The Italian in charge says nothing to fear, it's in southern Italy and no cases there. They will however no longer transport large groups of us on buses, but instead we will be put in vans with 5 people. Anyone who questions it is branded as being dramatic and that fake news is to blame.
The American aspect of the trip says they are monitoring hour by hour and will see how things play out in the next few days to see how our conference should be handled or if it will be cancelled.
My friend that I was meeting there lives in New Zealand with her husband and kids (they have dual citizenship with UK & US, she does not- she is only US). Her flights through Seoul and Singapore have now been cancelled with the option to rebook. She is going to pass, since she is worried that if things continue to go downhill, New Zealand might not let her back in.

I've got a big trip to Italy planned for the beginning of May. Florence and Naples. I'm super worried now that it's going to get cancelled, and I'm going to be SOL on the in-country stuff that I've booked.

Time to cancel all tourist visas.

We can't stop the spread but we should be able to slow it down to give longer lead time for a vaccine development.

Anyone leaving the US is notified upon their return they're going into quarantine.

We will be there in June. Let us know how your trip goes! Seriously we aren't changing anything - let's see what March looks like.

That's what I keep trying to tell myself - take it one step at a time and not get too stressed until we know more.

Basically the number of cases has gone up a lot outside of China. South Korea has had a big increase, but over half are from one Church(cult) group.

There are significant number of cases in Iran and Italy. Cities in parts of Italy are closing schools and the like. The grocery shelves in Italy are depleted as most Europeans only grocery shop a few days at a time, and everyone is now in a panic. No one's really sure about Iran numbers, except they have double digits cases & several deaths. It looks to be starting to spread from there in the middle East.

Does not appear that children have an innate immunity, but the sample size is still too small to know the true risks. We will know much more about mortality / critical illness rates in about one month (once ROK, Japan, and Italy report). We also have our group of Americans with the disease, so hopefully they will all survive and the picture will not be so grim. China is lying about everything, hence the delay.

Sadly we have seen children who have passed in videos.
