The curve would be similar in shape but the total numbers in each category might be substantially different.

Influenza doesn't kill 18% of octogenarians that contract it.

I looked up flu and the ratios are similar across age groups but mortality isn't as high with the flu. Keep in mind though that this data is for mainland China and many of these people probably didn't receive proper treatment. I'm not sure if they ration care to the elderly but it wouldn't surprise me.

Not happening yet.....This still has plenty of twists and turns before all is said and done.

Your thinking is so 1960s. The purpose of bio warfare is less to attack the military than it is to attack the civilian infrastructure and basically sow panic in the rear ranks.

Every day new information comes out that "mitigates" the potentials of this disease ranging from descriptive Epidemiology to treatments etc. If we can delay it, then our healthcare systems can better deal with it and not be overwhelmed. The Chinese approach has actually protected the rest of the world for a short period of time. We should use that time wisely.

From a "best for the group point of view" the complete lockdown and possible disinformation has accomplished several positive things

1. Every day we learn more. Test better treatments.
2. Every day we can stretch the impact out, the better our HC system can handle the patients.
3. Every day we get closer to summer which will blunt the virus significantly.
4. Prevents panic & hysteria which can be more dangerous than the virus itself.

On the last point, I don't even blame WHO and the CDC for downplaying this even if they KNOW its gonna spread to everyone. Get too many doomsayers and you can get a "run on the banks" which throws everything into chaos.

It is very encouraging that our government is preparing by hiring new people, even if it is for 13 months.

Nah that's really only true in Tokyo in my experience. They live in very dense urban spaces, but I never felt uncomfortable or squished except in Tokyo.

Besides, I asked if Japan was cleaner? If anything that subway picture of their "men with gloves" would indicate yes...

I only saw one homeless person ever in Japan in many trips over four years.

But the subway thing has no comparison. They literally shove people in, when there's no way you can get more people in without someone shoving.
