10% economic loss is not a blip. That's a depression.

It's also world wide.

By itself the US can weather supply disruptions. There may be some empty shelves and slow downs but it's not a complete killer. How many storage units and barns are full to the brim with "stuff" we can't keep in our houses? Buying used and flea markets will become super popular.

BUT a lot of people will lose their jobs. Retail, Commercial Real Estate, Mortgage Brokers, Restaurant staff, cleaning crews etc ....

The unemployment rate has the potential to skyrocketed with this.
I think it unlikely a lot of US citizens will lose their jobs. We still haven't seen the widespread spread of the virus in US cities. Most economists think this will be a few months drag on the economy at worst....not a depression.

Look at the price of oil / gas because of this. Wouldn't be surprised to see layoffs that are related.

A little like the UK people in France--> The family from Taiwan that somehow got it on their trip to Italy. Changing planes in Hong Kong is the suspected spot as to where they picked it up.

https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3873332

Interesting above post about travel in Germany. It does seem like the majority of people are really lax about it. If we start seeing more of these cases of people picking it up at airports etc that might change.

I was scheduled for a conference in Germany and Italy at the beginning of next month. I think if we keep seeing more of this spreading, they will probably cancel. I did notice the Berlin conference posted this:

"As you are aware, the first cases of the coronavirus have now been identified in Europe, including here in Germany. Indeed, the authorities in Berlin have already issued a statement to the effect that Berlin is very well prepared to deal with any cases. The safety and health of our exhibitors, visitors and partners is our number one priority. At present, we do not foresee any impacts, but as a precaution we are introducing new measures to increase the safety of all attendees:
We will have a number of rapid response English speaking medical teams and other health professionals located here onsite to deal with any situations that may arise;
Hand disinfectors will now be provided at all entrances of the exhibition in addition to hand sanitation already installed in all toilets and washrooms at the event;
We are increasing the frequency with which our sanitary facilities are disinfected; Please be assured that we are monitoring the situation very closely and are in regular contact with the health authorities of the State of Berlin.

Should there be any changes to the current status, we will take account of any recommendations from the relevant federal and state authorities, and the municipal health authorities, and implement all appropriate instructions."

On the BBC reporting comment- yes, they have been good at trying to cover it for sure. Their reporter Stephen McDonnell went into Wuhan and they kept kicking him out. They then quarantined him in his apartment in Beijing. His twitter account is @StephenMcDonell.

My experience with China is limited - just a few friends, a handful of trips, and helping run a JV in China. That's why I am happy to learn from people who know more than me.

It seems unusual to me because I've never seen an action on this scale with this magnitude of economic consequence for them. Especially affecting both the interior and coastal provinces. If there are examples I don't know about I'd like to read about them.

A work colleague (military) in Europe just picked up his wife at the airport today. She transited to our location via Hong Kong.

The military has directed that the military member and wife quarantine at home for the next 2 weeks.

I traveled to WuHan City a couple of years ago and took this photo in one of the large street markets. I have no idea if this is one of the markets implicated in the spread of the virus. You can see meats hanging in the background . The thing that stood out most to me, though, is evident in the bottom of the photo. The vegetables looked great, but there were channels cut into the concrete to let water from ice and overspray run directly into the street sewage system. And, yes, people would throw trash into those channels as well. It makes me a bit sick to look back at it now, but you can see how disease can spread rapidly in second and third world countries.

There could be a massive revolt but the timing isnt ideal for either side. However, if the party starts to be viewed as the protected (from the virus or as the cause itself) while the citizens start falling off in massive numbers then threatened people act in extraordinary ways

I'm not arguing that there's going to be a revolt. I'm arguing that quarantining a few cities of people for a couple of weeks is not an unusually heavy-handed response for the Chinese.

We in the US would see that as an unheard of response to an apocalyptic scenario. China routinely imprisons it's own citizens hundreds of thousands at a time. Having a few cities of people stay home for a week or so is not the Defcon 1 level reponse some in this thread are assuming it is. They run their country very differently than a western power, and you have to view their actions in light of their norms, not ours.
Now THAT is very illuminating observation. So you do see that here, or in Europe, or even South America---that response would be off the dial in its implication. I even think it would be for Russia. But you are saying no, not for China. The bold then is true? If that is true, then it might explain some of their ire at us "making it bigger than it is" -- without them grasping that to us such shut downs are mind-boggling. Hmmm....

I've been struggling with how to respond to these types of questions. Is it outside the norm to think the Chinese gov't apparatus would forcibly quarantine 400 million people; I think the answer is no. Given their absolute lockdown on power and the threat to social stablity; and ultimately Party stablity; they have both the governmental will, the Party will and ability (Local and Federal police structures; and Security police structures) to execute such broad reaching actions. Is it unusual that they have seen the need to take such sweeping actions affecting 1/3 of their nation; yes. Signaling there is a significant issue that requires this extreme reaction is far from normal. They don't like admitting something got away from them and that they are not 100% in control of their destiny. I don't think there is any doubt that this is highly unusual and disruptive. They are obviously gravely concerned. Xi and his chronies; and the nation in general, fears social disruption and chaos. All Xi's actions have been to centralize power under him and reduce local/regional autonomy.

I have 22 years of experience working inside of China; lived their for a year back in 2006 in what was at the time the southern manufacturing hub for the country prior to things moving inland to Chengdu or Chongqing; and lived in Japan during SARS. During SARS, I never experienced a forced quarantine from entering China. They did not execute sweeping national or regional quarantines of anything near what we are seeing now. There were airport screenings both entering and exiting China and countries in the region at the time.

I have seen what they are willing to do to force their will on their people. Tibet, the Sichwan region and Xinjiang; all under Xi have undergone a massive transformation. Millions have been "relocated". These are massive geographical areas. In the Tibetan areas; they have moved millions out of their traditional isolated mountainous homes into villages of minimally about 60k people. Entire cities that didn't exist in my 1st trip to Sichuan, sprung up overnight within 2 years. Complete infrastructure, hotels, train stations, HDB's, et al; and fully populated. Dozens of these cities. In all three of these regions, Security Police presence is very visible in all public areas. It is normal for armed Security police in hotel lobbies 24/hrs; patrolling the streets, etc. In Tibet and Sichuan, the Llama's are the main source of trouble for them. In general, there are checkpoints about every 50 miles that require you to pull over and the vehicle and occupants to be inspected. I have been denied entry to entire counties due to local "unrest". I have seen the security police convoys being rushed in to address issues. In Xinjiang, the Muslim populations are the issue. Traveling in Xinjian is still relatively unhindered in the northern parts; this is beautiful Alpine country similar to what you see in Switzerland or Northern Italy...but not the South where the camps have been built. Similar to regions in Tibet and the Tibetan plateau, the further you approach those areas; the more restricted the travel.

Whether we ever get the truth of the virus origins; I would doubt. Transparency with the outside world on something like this would likely only come accidentally with the translation of some internal discussion that was not meant for outside consumption. In Xi's writings, he is quite specific on his taboos; like freedom of the press, inalienable rights apart from the states, western style democracy, etc. Xi is an absolute dictator who has been consumed with centralization of power in Mao-ist fashion since he came to power.

Sorry for the long winded response.

Nailed it and I agree completely. These lockdowns are not local party decisions trying to look good as the people who stopped the quarantine. They are from the top - and that is somehow more concerning to me.

On the previous page, someone posted one of those "the flu is more dangerous than coronavirus" articles

As a side note, it's an interesting how the people who mindlessly repeat those MSM articles are leftist trolls and those who seek a variety of sources tend to be more right leaning.

Unfortunately the "variety of sources" that are being sought out are usually random Twitter accounts, YouTube videos, or posts from Reddit, virtually all of which cannot be backed up, are a picture or video without any context, or are just made up crap. Just because someone claims X on a picture or video, does not make it reality; nor does someone claiming to have a PhD or MD mean they really do.

There is only "leftist troll" here, and you all know who he is.

The rest of us just use critical thinking and don't swallow everything posted on Twitter, YouTube, or Reddit as gospel. Other people here do because it fits what they want to believe, or it fits whatever crazy agenda they're trying to push. (Would not be surprised if at least one is a troll doing it for the laughs.) If you notice, the vast majority of the more outrageous doomsday posts are not posted by people who have been here a long time, and virtually all their posts are on this one thread, or the other threads about the virus.

How scared of coronavirus would you hay to be to cross into North Korea to escape? And then you still brought the disease with you.

China may have found a way to destabilize North Korea and oust Kim without a single shot being fired by spreading the virus.

Been on Texags for decades. Had an old very active account. This account was a sock used by a friend and when he stopped posting, he told me his password. Started using it a few years ago sporadically. Glad to see so many are analyzing my posting history.

And yes, I am concerned but I have always been fascinated with this stuff...from back when Hot Zone, The Demon in the Freezer, Cobra Event (fiction), Virus Hunters of the CDC, etc were published. Part of my job is to keep track of things of this nature and raise alerts when it can affect our supply chain. I've mainly been treating this thread as a place to post things I run across that raise my eyebrows. There has been a lot that I have seen and not posted.
