Iirc it infected about that many and killed well over 10%

It infected about 30% of the global population and killed about 3%
I recall a clear figure of 50-60 million. There were less than 2 billion people 100 years ago.

There were 1.5 billion people alive in 1918. 50 million is 3.3% of 1.5 billion.

Math is hard

There's a ****load of those videos. The theory espoused is that the virus also attacks the heart, which has no symptoms until heart attack. At first i was skeptical, but kore and more of these videos of people dropping dead keep coming out.

They're staged... Look at the accounts posting the original videos. They're Chinese millennials and GenZs. They're looking for he follows and the platform launch.

Coronavirus is capable of living on the surfaces as long as nine days, remaining infectious, according to the group of German researchers. Scientists from Greifswald and Bochum claimed in their report released on Friday that its average lifetime is four to five days at room temperature.

"Cold and high humidity increase their lifespan even further," Gnter Kampf from the Institute for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine at the University Medical Center in Greifswald warned.
Wonder why none of this type of information is coming out of China?

10% economic loss is not a blip. That's a depression.

It's also world wide.

By itself the US can weather supply disruptions. There may be some empty shelves and slow downs but it's not a complete killer. How many storage units and barns are full to the brim with "stuff" we can't keep in our houses? Buying used and flea markets will become super popular.

BUT a lot of people will lose their jobs. Retail, Commercial Real Estate, Mortgage Brokers, Restaurant staff, cleaning crews etc ....

The unemployment rate has the potential to skyrocketed with this.
I think it unlikely a lot of US citizens will lose their jobs. We still haven't seen the widespread spread of the virus in US cities. Most economists think this will be a few months drag on the economy at worst....not a depression.

Now they're saying virus can live in atmospheric aerosols blowing outdoors in the freaking wind.

That would explain the massive smoking equipment spraying everywhere.

If this can really live outdoors and hang out on doorknobs and ride the wind for over a week without a host, then it's pretty much a pandemic for sure.

Do you remember in not the last CDC press conference, but one of the ones before they were saying they were having issues with the tests. Sometimes the patient would be negative, the next day positive, the next time negative, etc. They admitted they were having a hard time as well.

I thought at one point China was skipping only using that test and also allowing the "glass" features on the CAT scan as a positive case. I don't remember which news outlet that was on or I'd site it. Sorry!

As someone that looks at chest CT's, the imaging findings are not specific at all for this infection. Pneumonia of numerous etiologies can look the same.

I imagine it gives a better picture than not having been.

I know they can be brutal. But they also maintain power by keeping their constituents fed, clothed, and so on. And a great many people in China are not in the CCP, and are not necessarily political. In some respects their system is akin to federalism, but the amount of local control changes over time with different leaders.

It's not like North Korea.

Until it needs to be.

That's the inescapable rub of totalitarianism, Chinese or otherwise. You live well at the pleasure of the rulers. When they decide otherwise, your world comes crashing down around you, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

Try telling the Uighurs how pleasant life is in China being well fed and clothed by the ruling CCP.

There could be a massive revolt but the timing isnt ideal for either side. However, if the party starts to be viewed as the protected (from the virus or as the cause itself) while the citizens start falling off in massive numbers then threatened people act in extraordinary ways

I'm not arguing that there's going to be a revolt. I'm arguing that quarantining a few cities of people for a couple of weeks is not an unusually heavy-handed response for the Chinese.

We in the US would see that as an unheard of response to an apocalyptic scenario. China routinely imprisons it's own citizens hundreds of thousands at a time. Having a few cities of people stay home for a week or so is not the Defcon 1 level reponse some in this thread are assuming it is. They run their country very differently than a western power, and you have to view their actions in light of their norms, not ours.

Now THAT is very illuminating observation. So you do see that here, or in Europe, or even South America---that response would be off the dial in its implication. I even think it would be for Russia. But you are saying no, not for China. The bold then is true? If that is true, then it might explain some of their ire at us "making it bigger than it is" -- without them grasping that to us such shut downs are mind-boggling. Hmmm....

Too bad people don't give a **** about the flu which has killed 9,000 people this year thus far as they do Ebola and coronavirus. People would wait days to get a vaccine for one of those but millions of people still fail to get a flu shot.

The flu doesn't present near as much of a problem if things go wrong.

The last time what happened? China's leadership imposing its will on its own people to do what they think what they think is best for the country at the expense of a particular group of its own citizens?

Pretty much all the time.

Flu kills about 0.1% of the people it infects, and my wife almost died from it several years ago (she is allergic to the vaccines so she can't take them).

This coronavirus appears to kill at least 20 to 30 times as much as the flu, with a transmissibility almost double the flu. No vaccine for it, no natural immunity by anyone, and it causes severe illness in about 20% of the infections with 2-week hospital stays.

I was in Germany all last week. Best I could tell this whole thing has been a non-event there. Only saw a handful of people wearing masks in the Frankfurt airport. None on the trains. A few observations:

  • The last time I checked the John Hopkins GIS map was on Jan 31. There were 11,374 reported cases and 239 deaths. I checked this morning, it now reads 37,592 infected and 814 dead. More than 3x in just over a week. Wow! And one of these deaths is in the Philippines and another is in Hong Kong...
  • I find is fascinating, and highly improbable, that there are no cases in Africa...
  • I watched BBC News Friday while I was in Frankfurt. They had a reporter from Shanghai showing what a freaking ghost town Shanghai has become. 24 million people live there - and on his normal commute he only saw a handful of people on the subway and in the streets. Eerie.
  • They are converting convention centers into makeshift hospitals in China - just row after row after row of beds.
  • For as left-leaning as the BBC is, man they do such a better job of reporting what's happening in the world and in greater depth than any news source here in the US.

They don't have the capability to identify and for the most part to test accurately. We have a network of labs all over the country. There may be a handful of labs on the continent over there.

Maybe not exactly a quarantine policy, but an extreme policy like their one-child policy should qualify as extreme to most other countries. Considering enforcement included forced abortions, forced sterilization, and fines.
