On the HIV topic, if this virus were to infect people with corona-HIV and not kill them or make them that sick, and part of that process would make them immune to other forms of HIV, then you just "cured" HIV.

Can somebody explain this new HIV theory now?

I'd ask him why the Chinese are using HIV treatments on coronavirus patients.

They've reportedly found parts of the virus's genetic sequence contains HIV sequencing in it.

If true, it would mean the Chinese engineered the virus. They were doing HIV research at the facility in Wuhan.

Supposedly it knocks out a pathway for HIV.

BTW. There's also a chance that those sequences were natural. But that's like saying Epstein suicide was a suicide.

Northern Europeans carry a mutation that makes them less susceptible.
Now then some of those are immune because they lack a receptor that virus needs to bind to to replicate.

Some small percentage of mostly Western European whiteys are supposedly immune. The number I always heard was 5%.

Take that with a grain of salt. I only know this from hearing it and it might be an urban legend.

How are you going to handle the influx of city people requesting to come stay with you if SHTF?

I've already had the conversation w one friend. Told her to find other accommodations if/when things go south. My family coming from the city get first dibs. It wasn't a good feeling.

Truth be told, I've got a list in my head of those that I will take their call and those that I won't. It makes me ill, but reality is finite/limited resources means tough decisions.

I had a conversation w another friend (married mid 30s) over a couple beers. When this virus thing was just getting rolling, I asked him what he do it a worst case. He admitted that w/o Uber eats he and his wife were screwed. Smart guy but zero common sense. Needless to say he's not on my invite list.

We have 1600 acres.. if they want to bring an rv and post up on the back 40 somewhere we have some room .. I don't think all "friends" would want to be in the middle of no where .. a few at best

I'm only at a few hundred acres. But got plenty of food water and supplies. I'll take a couple fam in and some friends that I know would be productive in case of a fight or prolonged societal meltdown. Obviously if this thing were to go long enough I will need help going to "procure" more supplies.

Essentially I'm thinking a gang of sorts. Let's hope this thing peters out and nothing drastic has to happen.

A possible explanation is that this is the maximum testing quantity available in China . Also why suspected cases is still climbing

I am trying to understand what is the real issue with this particular strain of whatever it ultimately turns out to be. Is it more virulent? Higher death rate? Spread faster? Not really sure I understand the hysteria vs the regular flu. We've already had over 10k die in the US this year of the garden variety flu. Where and why does this one vary and create panic?

As has been said, because there's no immunity or exposure to this. So if it gets out, it could run through the population at a much higher rate.

seasonal flu has low mortality, this may also be orders of magnitude higher.

There is reason to suspect that China was studying (if not modifying) this virus in a bio lab. China's reported numbers are suspected to be several times lower than real numbers. Infected persons are spreading the virus before showing symptoms. The mortality of this virus seems to be 20-30 times that of the normal flu. The spread of this virus appears to be 2 to 3 times more than the normal flu. I'm sure I have left off several other important facts.

Spreads about two orders of magnitude faster than the regular flu.
Mortality rate is about 6.5% compared to 0.1% for flu.
The real problem is that about 20% of cases require hospitalization.

The death rate may be a lot lower due to the unknown number of cases that are mild and never wind up being tracked. Right now the death rate is only for those bad enough to go to the hospital or seek out testing. At least I hope...

Measles can have lots of complication but the main issue is that the R0 for measles varies between 12 and 18. It's incredibly infectious and dangerous to unvaccinated populations.

I wouldn't say that if the research is true then the virus being engineered is a certainty. It's certainly possible for such a mutation to occur naturally, although I do lean towards it being unlikely.

For instance, let's say a bat is a carrier for both HIV and SARS, and that one of his cells contains RNA from both viruses. Viruses are famous for their use of "transposons" which are small sequences where certain enzymes can cleave and reattach the RNA. It's possible that the amino acid residues brought into question by the paper were flanked by these sequences, the Coronovirus ones were cut out, and then replaced with complementary ones from HIV.

What makes me skeptical about it occurring naturally is that these things are random in nature, so seeing one or even two groups swap over might be reasonable to expect.

But four all at once, with this Coronavirus strain being the only known one with any? That strikes me as a statistical outlier and pretty suspicious, especially given the presence of a Bio Level 4 lab in the immediate vicinity that was supposedly doing research on bat Coronaviruses.
