Good god the grocery store is a disaster zone. I just needed some regular groceries and there is hardly any meat. I've been in line to pay for 30 minutes.

I sure as hell hope this isn't a new normal.
It won't be. It'll slow down because people going to the store right now won't come back for a while ...

Restaurants and fast food are going to make a killing.

I bet people can't afford some of these grocery hauls very often. You'd think people are preparing to not leave the house for a month.

combined with social distancing (if adhered to), there's still time for diagnostics to be useful

and they'll be useful for the second wave (and the third and the fourth)

Governor Abbott is going to make an announcement tonight or tomorrow to recommend the entire state shut down schools and events of more than 20

Speculating or have a connection?

Connection. I was skeptical on the 20 number as well and was told "I guess we'll find out when he announces it."

Days off won't count against the schools.
Update on this. The 20 number wasn't a firm number, but it was discussed with Abbott yesterday. I just can't imagine he announces a prohibition that strict at this point.

State of Emergency will be declared - obviously. K-12 shutdown is advised for at least 2 weeks.

Panic begets panic, and we live in society filled with a lot of stupid people.
I was at the Boerne HEB nearly at opening this morning to grab some stuff to take to the ranch later today. First thing I saw walking in was a lady with a large package of paper towels in each hand and a nine roll package of TP under each arm headed to the self checkout lane.

I had to buy TP, soap and food/drinks to take with me to the ranch and pet food to leave with the sitter, so I was there for over an hour. Every single shopper except for one had at least one paper product in their basket, most had the max allowed. Also, after I passed the Clorox wipe isle they apparently put out some, the few that had them got the stink eye from everyone else. One guy had 3 large packages of wipes in his cart, from my limited time in the same area of the store, I am very certain he could have traded them for certain types of favors. This panic is truly unbelievable. I normally go to the grocery store every 10-14 days and we usually have enough TP, soap, cleaning supplies and paper towels to last well over a month on hand. It might be a smart time to start shorting paper and cleaning product manufacturers because based on what I saw this morning, most people are going to have a 3-5 year stockpile sitting in their garage whenever this panic cools down.
Not much better at the HEB in College Station this morning. Decided to get up early and go shopping when they opened for two reason. Don't want to fight a 200+ person line to check out, and was hoping to be actually able to find stuff.

Got there when they opened and it was probably 10 times busier than it was last Friday at the same time. Thankfully I was able to get about 90% of what I was looking for, but fresh fruit (especially bananas) and bread were hard to come by. There was some bottled water, but the entire paper products aisle was completely empty. They did have bleach as I saw people with some in their carts, but no wipes and little if any other cleaning products. And of course, zero hand soap, hand sanitizer, isopropyl alcohol with signs saying they didn't know when they would have stock.

The canned food aisle was packed with people loading up full boxes of anything they could get their hands on.

Was talking to the person in line behind me and just like me, all she wanted to do was get her normal groceries, not spend her life savings on toilet paper.

Nurse friend says the state is lying about the testing. They state is saying they have more tests than are being requested.

The fact is, the tests are being requested, but they will not test unless the person has traveled to certain countries or other strict criteria.

No community spread if you dont test.

Criteria is being set by local officials or hospitals.

Even if commercial labs can test, there's confusion / limitation on getting samples. Commercial labs have phlebotomists and aren't set up with PPE or training to do these swabs. Local doctors offices say they dont have PPE so they can't safely take the sample.

Then there's actual limits on tests anyway, so they're prioritizing them for acute cases.

We had since January to get this sorted out.

Similar deal - The Texas Color Guard Circuit and Winter Guard International cancelled all the rest of the events for the season effective immediately. You may have never heard of that, but thousands of high school and college aged color guard and percussion kids had their seasons cut short. The state championships are held at Reed Arena over two weekends, and then nationals are in Dayton Ohio. These kids put thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of rehearsal into their shows - costumes, flag silks, props - some of them are crazy extravagant and they've been rehearsing since November.

Done.

All of that to say, it's not just athletes. We had a Senior from our school fly back from a Spring Break mission trip in Honduras early to compete in the Area competition only to find out as she was getting off the plane that it was cancelled and she had unknowingly already performed her last time of her high school career.

Depends on the city / state / hospital.

Local organizations are starting to give the feds the finger and rightly so. Maybe some good will come out of this in the form of pushback into bureaucratic overreach.

I was there too. Some people were going crazy - overflowing carts of stuff. I just bought enough for two weeks of groceries, as we are going to mostly stay home for the next couple weeks out of an abundance of precaution. i work from home and my wife is probably going to be allowed to and while CSISD has not yet announced another week off, I expect them to follow TAMU, Blinn and Bryan.

My wife was there yesterday afternoon and they were out of meat, most produce, paper products, most bread... they restocked some over night but it still looks like a horde of locusts went through there. Still zero paper products and very little bread. In case you think I'm kidding, this was HEB Tower Point at 7:45AM this morning:

San Diego update because there's ALOT of people saying this is going to be a disaster...

No schools have closed. I expect that to change and spring break to be a week longer or so similar to match what the Texas ISDs are doing because it's the trendy thing currently. They go on spring break later this month and first week of April. They'll do distant learning and already have plans in the works.

Other than that planning, the restaurants and other public spaces are normal. Actually, the bar was more crowded last night meeting friends for work. I attribute that to the new later sunset and more daytime.

Have a group going to big bear this weekend. It's been snowing this week and hope it's good. Hoping the hysteria makes the slopes not nearly as crowded.

Haven't been to store because like a normal person I did my biweekly shopping last weekend.

Gf went to the store for booze supplies earlier in the week and a couple dinner items...said it was normal.

Talked to a doctor at the gym and they do have a patient but he isn't worried in the long run. Expects things to be kinda crazy because of people, but expects it to be normal in about a month, well as normal as we can be with people still screaming the world is ending.

Oh yeah, went to the gym. Besides everyone wiping down everything thrice with Clorox wipes, it was normal for a Friday morning workout.

I don't understand the run on foods. We don't have a shortage and this isn't a natural disaster where supply chains have been decimated or power lost. Come early next week or even this weekend there will still be shipments. Are these people hording going to be buying daily? Doubtful. Well except the people dwelling in basements posting on here

Yeah, pandemics are comprised of multiple epidemics. The local epidemics don't happen all at once. That's why the testing thing is hurting us, everyone's panicking and in the absence of info some places are shutting down early when they don't need to. Then when they DO need to, people will ignore it.

I've been led to believe the entire continental USA would be infected by this point in time by this very thread.

This thing didn't just pop up in the states. It's been here since at least January, if not before then. People have been sick with it that didn't know they've had it. The difference now is the panic flames have been stoked. We'll both continue on and do what we can within the boundaries set by the government.
Good luck to you and the others on this board, you're more rational than the others that tend to post doom on the board, and more cautious than those like me.
