covid-19 made it to Alaska today... thoughts and prayers please.

In all seriousness im curious how things play out here if/when it makes its way to remote communities and/or our already small capacity medical system gets over burdened.
I had asked that a couple of pages ago as I have a friend who moved out to their dream barndo in a rural area out west.

Que Te Gusto Mas replied to me:
Quote:

Was just discussing this, and I'm not sure if they do. This is likely going to be an issue because the resources are centralized in the urban areas. The only thing I can figure is there has to be discussions at the state level and agreements made at the local levels on allocating resources statewide as and where they are needed. However, there is a very strong chance we'll be operating at 50% to 150% above ICU capacity for an extended period of time based on the numbers they're throwing out.

as did Robk:
Quote:

I live out in the Big Bend, and our hospital has been pretty transparent. They had a press conference earlier this week that was pretty informative. Basically we have 2 ICU beds in the area. Once those are taken they will move people to El Paso.

ASFAIK, Milam county doesn't have a hospital but they are close to some such as the BCS area. Where my friend lives, they have a community hospital an hour or so away but I don't think it is too large.

Perhaps depending upon the rate of spread, speed of recovery, etc the rural areas would be able to better avoid transmission due to population density but perhaps also be stressed if the virus DID hit, due to availability of healthcare if serious cases arose.

Asking for a friend.

I think using a VPN that shows you in Italy should get the job done.

According to a friend...
My religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave.

Buried deep in that story was this info:
Quote:

Supply problems are ongoing, even after the federal government fulfilled a first shipment that included tens of thousands of N95 respirator masks, surgical masks and disposable gowns from a federal stockpile.

Piazza said the nursing association continues to receive reports that members at area hospitals are being asked to reuse or share personal protective equipment, wear only one mask a shift or conserve masks for use exclusively with COVID-19 confirmed patients.

State officials placed a second order for supplies last weekend.

Casey Katims, director of federal affairs for Inslee, said three trucks of medical supplies from the federal stockpile arrived Thursday morning, including 129,380 N-95 respirators; 308,206 surgical masks; 58,688 face shields; 47,850 surgical gowns; and 170,376 glove pairs.

If the measures taken now aren't enough, state officials have contingency plans they've been working on "for a while now," said Lofy, the state health officer.

"The next step is to start thinking about alternate care systems or alternate care facilities. These are facilities that could potentially be used outside the clinic or the health care system walls."

No clue what they're going to do with that.

This is a very interesting interview once Maddow stops talking.

Fascinating look into what China has been doing.

He talks about mild cases being everything from no symptoms to pneumonia. Massive range covered.

And God Bless those of you who won't listen to what he is saying because of what show he is on or who he writes for.

There's also another interview with a Dr. on KVUE that really takes the fear out of this virus. I am mobile now and can't locate it, but worth a read.

The Seattle homeless are going to be wiped out with this virus and spread it to nearly every corner of the city before they are.....same with SF, LA, NYC, Chicago, Austin, Dallas, etc.

Watch lib heads explode when someone realizes this and recommends rounding them up to put them in camps. It sucks but this population is going to be a super spreader.

Time to start making tough decisions...

Early on, I thought about the densely populated areas of India and poor sanitary practices and how it could spread..

I just came to this realization earlier this morning that we have areas just like that, especially on the west coast. If this virus gets a foothold in even a few of these tent cities it will run rampant through that segment of the population and be a breeding ground to infect the rest of the populace in those areas. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.
Maybe? Maybe as carriers, but one population most residents avoid are the homeless, so I guess I'm like you and one has to wait and see. I think children would be a greater risk for wide population spread due to the nature of our social interactions and also the symptoms of the virus being perhaps milder for them.

Well, to be fair the point would be to get the stuff you need now while the risk is lower than in the future.

Washington state is. I'm sure others are, but I haven't looked for it.

The last time I check WA, Tuesday, they had tested about 3,400 people with about 11% being positive, the rest being negative.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. I'm guessing most on this board don't spend much time in lower income areas. I've owned some apartments in very poor areas. The homeless are intertwined with the residents; at the bus stops, in the retail stores, restaurants, govt service offices, churches, food banks, etc.

This virus will infect these populations throughout the US. There won't be much testing or even a recognition that the pandemic is there until way too late in the story.

Everyone is focused on the politicians, sports stars, suburbanites, and international travelers, the real battle to "shift the curve" will be fought in the poor areas.

Houston area isn't even reporting the number of tests theyre performing.

https://www.khou.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/only-one-houston-area-county-will-release-number-of-covid-19-tests-performed/285-df63b4aa-381a-4cac-bcf9-cfc754ce4dad

Here's the number of tests.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/testing-in-us.html

Remember it's 2 samples per person.

Just subtract the number of confirmed.

I have seen numbers comparing the two, but I can't remember where. We are not seeing a lot of negatives because they're not doing widespread testing but only for highly likely positives - people with travel history or close contact with a known case AND symptomatic or in some cases travel history or close contact AND symptomatic AND hospitalized. It's dumb.

I'm guessing anything goes in state of emergency but at county level? Who knows... I'm sure I'll hear all about it tomorrow and the Rector had made an emphasis on faith in Jesus and not fearing (to which I quietly commented was idiotic in a pandemic situation, so I'm not displeased with the state of emergency but it irks me on the Dallas County level involuntary restriction)

What a ****ing joke! They ban churches, but make an exception for movie theaters? Sounds like it's time to temporarily rebrand "Mass" as a "live action religious Cinema experience"

I guess the point is that they should've done what a lot of us did and made their preparations weeks ago.

Now they're in such a panic that they're oblivious to the fact that they're putting themselves in a situation that they're preparing to avoid.

That's a fair point, and one I didn't consider w/respect to the facilities such as bus stops, etc. I haven't paid much attention to the celebrities, I figure they're going to do whatever they want to do, but average Americans will bear the brunt of any service rationing.

As a former track coach, I would celebrate that fact. The number of times I was with a bunch of track goofballs from 6am-9pm on a weekend made me question my sanity... And why I no longer am in education.

I was at the Boerne HEB nearly at opening this morning to grab some stuff to take to the ranch later today. First thing I saw walking in was a lady with a large package of paper towels in each hand and a nine roll package of TP under each arm headed to the self checkout lane.

I had to buy TP, soap and food/drinks to take with me to the ranch and pet food to leave with the sitter, so I was there for over an hour. Every single shopper except for one had at least one paper product in their basket, most had the max allowed. Also, after I passed the Clorox wipe isle they apparently put out some, the few that had them got the stink eye from everyone else. One guy had 3 large packages of wipes in his cart, from my limited time in the same area of the store, I am very certain he could have traded them for certain types of favors. This panic is truly unbelievable. I normally go to the grocery store every 10-14 days and we usually have enough TP, soap, cleaning supplies and paper towels to last well over a month on hand. It might be a smart time to start shorting paper and cleaning product manufacturers because based on what I saw this morning, most people are going to have a 3-5 year stockpile sitting in their garage whenever this panic cools down.
