I am a booster for our high school band. I cant believe we are screwing our kids over this way.

Insert the "but we need distance" talk.

The crowds are now at Kroger, the mall, Cinnemark, etc. Fitness Connection was packed last night.

Quick question.

Does anyone here think that they would die if they got the Flu? Or would you just ride it out at home until your immune system beat the virus?

Quick answer, probably ride it out. Since I got a vaccine in September, I'd be more comfortable with riding it out, while knowing I can go to a doctor for Tamiflu if it's not improving.

Did people expect giant corporations and governments to continue to allow massive gatherings of people who would sue them or vote them out after they contract a disease at one of their events?

Don't be silly. Anyone paying attention knew this was coming the moment China locked down a population the size of the US.

covid-19 made it to Alaska today... thoughts and prayers please.

In all seriousness im curious how things play out here if/when it makes its way to remote communities and/or our already small capacity medical system gets over burdened.

I wish I had a copy of the game plan that is being run by the state and CDC here in Texas.

Why should we close all schools for 14 days?
Do we have adequate testing in state, and what are the criteria that allows someone to be tested?
I was told that we had adequate stockpiles of PPE in Texas. Is that still true?

How many of those in self-quarantine tested positive? How many tested negative or weren't tested at all?

I'm actually upset they aren't going to play this without the crowds. It would have been awesome to watch just the players on that course.

Basketball or hockey in empty 15,000 seat arenas, that's just weird. Golf can pull it off.

Went to the local Walmart this morning and they had everything except for paper products, frozen veggies, and chicken. Did my normal shopping but picked up a few things to do if we stay home for 2 weeks. Will run to Specs later and good to go.

Bad information and trolls do us all a great disservice. But shouldn't discount all facts because some people hyperventilate or stir the pot. This virus wasn't a biopreparat weapon made in a lab; that doesn't mean it's not a concern. People doing a simple excel best fit function telling you the whole world would be infected by March shouldn't make you think it isn't capable of rapid, localized exponential growth.

We actually do have some pretty good ideas on when it got here and how, and how long it has been here multiplying. You can see it by the genetic branching of the virus.
https://nextstrain.org/ncov

People absolutely, with certainty, been sick with it without a diagnosis. That's actually part of the problem, not a point against responding. That means it can become widely spread by people with mild symptoms. It isn't the cases in isolation which are the problem.

Its good to avoid the localized hot spots, but since we have localized community spread in multiple cities, and large amounts of domestic travel, it's almost certain that this will spread to every major city in the next few weeks. Doesn't mean panic. Just means clear eyed view of whats coming.

Except for the fact that players from around the world from Europe, Asia, Australia, etc travel to play the event then share a locker room with other players.

Players were already withdrawing from this week's event before it was cancelled.

Blue star and an excellent post. We need a lot more of this, and a lot less of the cranks on both extremes (I.e. this is a bio weapon with 100% fatality on one side, and this is just a bad cold and everyone who is concerned is a panicky moron on the other. )

Good god the grocery store is a disaster zone. I just needed some regular groceries and there is hardly any meat. I've been in line to pay for 30 minutes.

I sure as hell hope this isn't a new normal.
It won't be. It'll slow down because people going to the store right now won't come back for a while ...

Restaurants and fast food are going to make a killing.

I'm hearing restaurants are deserted. This is going to be a disaster for small business.
I was at my local watering hole on Tuesday - looked like a normal crowd...

I think the mass cancellations of events, gatherings, and the implementation of a new travel ban may lead to a different result this weekend.

My thoughts are that if you believe that you would not die from the Flu, the more than likely you would survive the coronavirus.

Granted. The coronavirus attacks the lungs, so add smokers, asthma and people with lung issues to the list of high risk. But, overall and for most of us the treatment is the same. Stay at home and treat the symptoms and ride it out.

I think the CDC needs to come up with a message about when you should ride it out and when you should consider your symptoms to be serious enough to merit hospitalization. (Like if your lungs fill up and your blood oxygen level is low)

Your blood oxygen level can be easily monitored at home with a pulse oximeter. If it gets below a certain level then you probably need to be put on Oxygen. That is the kind of info we all need.

You can buy pulse oximeters anywhere and I think even the Apple Watch has an app to monitor it for you.

Drum Corp Intl still assuming they'll have a season:

Quote:

DCI will continue to adhere to all national directives and incorporate the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, public health authorities, and physicians to ensure the safety of our performers, staff, volunteers, partners, audience members, and everyone associated with DCI's nationwide operational structure.

With so many schools and events affected at this point, we understand that many in the DCI community are concerned about the 2020 Summer Tour, which begins three months from now. While there have already been some disruptions to rehearsal camps for the individual corps this month depending on their geographic locations, there will likely be more impact on spring activities. However, at this point, we are continuing to plan for a 2020 DCI Summer Tour.

You know, while my daily life is still fine and things are going well for me, happy about to move into a new home, etc.

I've actually moved more into anger about the over panic of this. I was slightly amused earlier but its more anger now seeing all the misinformation out there, the ratcheting up of the panicking, the media, it's really wrong. I pray within the next few weeks everything will calm down.

I've been extremely disappointed in the majority of Americans and their inability to face any kind of crises. This is 2020 for god sake's and people are acting like it's the dark ages.

Be smarter and calmer people.

On Wednesday we went out to eat and it was packed but who knows what will be today. Going later. Also going to a movie later it will be interesting to see how that's affected too. I'm halfway expecting for them to close them down all those, but Cinemark sent out a note saying they're just doing extra cleaning.

COVID19 attacks the lungs, yes. Highest risk comorbidity have been reported to be obesity and heart conditions, along with respiratory (actually worse than respiratory, weirdly enough).

You're right that for nearly all cases there's no treatment other than gatorade and maybe something to control fever (advil or tylenol).

The CDC has said you should call your doc if you have shortness of breath.

China was separating cases based on O2 of <93% or 94% as the trigger to call it severe vs mild.

We need to all help disseminate good informatoin.

If we advertised that we had plenty of testing kits available, wouldn't that have the unintended consequence of causing a rush on healthcare facilities? Tons of people with a cough would be showing up to be tested. Mingling with each other. Crowding the facilities. Monopolizing healthcare workers.

Thoughts?
