Hot and dry kills it
Wet/humid slows it's spread, but preserves it some in warmth (probably because droplets tend to be cooler)
Cold/cool and dry is the most conducive for preserving and spreading (worst situation)

Keep in mind that climate controlled buildings are mostly cool and dry (bad news)

Saw interview with one of the infected from the cruise ship. He looked to be in his 60's. Said his only symptoms were a fever that came on quick, 103, and lasted for about 8 hours. Also a dry cough. He's going to be fine. His wife who was with him didn't get it.

You know it's serious when they're talking about pushing the Olympics.

They've been discussing it for a while now because they just don't know what will happen by July.
This is all project management 101 expectation management stuff.

Last week they floated the idea of pushing the Olympics to the fall, now it's next year. Going to quietly make that announcement within the next month.

From the cdc website
Quote:

It is not yet known whether weather and temperature impact the spread of COVID-19. Some other viruses, like the common cold and flu, spread more during cold weather months but that does not mean it is impossible to become sick with these viruses during other months. At this time, it is not known whether the spread of COVID-19 will decrease when weather becomes warmer. There is much more to learn about the transmissibility, severity, and other features associated with COVID-19 and investigations are ongoing.

The spread rate is pretty slow in Australia and Singapore, so I'm going to adhere to the experts saying otherwise.
Both countries have shut down air travel from countries with outbreaks.

Singapore also throws anyone with so much as a cough into a hospital bed and hammers them with HIV antivirals.

Call me when the US starts doing that.

The spread in Singapore is low because they quarantine anything that moves

Spoiler alert, it will slow down considerably in the warm and humid summer, and probably come back in another form next winter, and we as a society will have to accept it is a part of our lives like the flu.
Or maybe it comes back really weak next year, either way it would be better to accept the reality of viruses.
Next year won't be an election year.
Trump will fix it.

Just to update on the Twitter rumors from earlier today.

Daniel Radcliffe does not have coronavirus.

https://nypost.com/2020/03/10/no-actor-daniel-radcliffe-does-not-have-coronavirus/

And people still wonder why I say don't trust something just because it is on Twitter. The whole thing started out just like the celebrity death hoaxes do, and spread around the Twitterverse.

Live in Panama (Central America) in tropical environment/warm humid weather down here.

Got first confirmed coronavirus case yesterday. Now today, the number of confirmed corona virus cases is increased to 8 with 1 death. Principal of a school got it and died and 2 other teachers at same school now also sick. 66 people currently under observation.

Suspended all national events and some schools have been suspended until April. Universities still open but we will see over next week if it gets a major foothold here and they have to crack down further on activities.

Update to my last post of the situation down here in Panama.

First confirmed case yesterday, then announced 8 confirmed cases today - and now 2 (two) deaths out of those 8 people.

The two people who died today (on the same day) were both teachers who worked at the same school. A 64-year old Principal of the school and a 49-year old teacher. Both passed away the same day (today) after catching this thing sometime in the past couple of weeks. The 64 year old apparently was a diabetic but the 49 year old had no known health issues. Just bad luck it seems and the virus took him down.

A third teacher at the same school has it but relatively mild symptoms. They also have approximately 70 people under observation. A doctor contact has told us privately tonight that they have more confirmed cases already in queue (at least 10 more) but are waiting until tomorrow to deliver that information.

Panama tonight in response has closed all schools in Panama City until April 7th at the earliest. All public events, concerts, sporting events nation wide have also been cancelled.

I know some people want to look at this situation that governments have been overreacting...but this thing apparently just came into Panama and killed 2 teachers at the same school on the same day. When was the last time anyone heard of the flu quickly taking out two teachers like that at a school nearby to you? I can tell you that for me personally, that gives me some pause.

Well over 1,000 people get the flu in Panama every year. Hot weather does not mean that respiratory viruses cannot be contracted, it just means that the environment is less condusive to them being so.

Exhibit A, B, and C are Vietnam, Thailand, and the Phillipines. They all have an insane amount of back and forth travel with China, and did so mid Wuhan outbreak. Today, their Covid levels are relatively low. By any measure, they should be completely overrun unless they have some common variable working in their favor (hot weather).

Sounds crazy and impossible but Seems like time not to over react but be preemptive. These rolling shut down will just drag this thing out - I'd say everyone stop moving around as much as they can - close the schools, offices, travel, events all at once for 14-21 days. A pause if you will. Presently closing a school district this week, another couple next week, etc , a city here and a couple cities later, doesn't seem like it would stop anything.

Warnings from Italy; what would their country look like if the "system" collapsed?

"I am writing to you from Bergamo, Italy, at the heart of the coronavirus crisis. The news media in the US has not captured the severity of what is happening here. I am writing this post because each of you, today, not the government, not the school district, not the mayor, each individual citizen has the chance, today to take actions that will deter the Italian situation from becoming your own country's reality. The only way to stop this virus is to limit contagion. And the only way to limit contagion is for millions of people to change their behavior today.

If you are in Europe or the US you are weeks away from where we are today in Italy.

I can hear you now. "It's just a flu. It only affects old people with preconditions"

There are 2 reasons why Coronavirus has brought Italy to it's knees. First it is a flu is devastating when people get really sick they need weeks of ICU and, second, because of how fast and effectively it spreads. There is 2 week incubation period and many who have it never show symptoms.

When Prime Minister Conte announced last night that the entire country, 60 million people, would go on lock down, the line that struck me most was "there is no more time." Because to be clear, this national lock down, is a hail mary. What he means is that if the numbers of contagion do not start to go down, the system, Italy, will collapse.

Why? Today the ICUs in Lombardy are at capacity more than capacity. They have begun to put ICU units in the hallways. If the numbers do not go down, the growth rate of contagion tells us that there will be thousands of people who in a matter of a week? two weeks? who will need care. What will happen when there are 100, or a 1000 people who need the hospital and only a few ICU places left?

On Monday a doctor wrote in the paper that they have begun to have to decide who lives and who dies when the patients show up in the emergency room, like what is done in war. This will only get worse.

There are a finite number of drs, nurses, medical staff and they are getting the virus. They have also been working non-stop, non-stop for days and days. What happens when the drs, nurses and medical staff are simply not able to care for the patients, when they are not there?

And finally for those who say that this is just something that happens to old people, starting yesterday the hospitals are reporting that younger and younger patients 40, 45, 18, are coming in for treatment.

You have a chance to make a difference and stop the spread in your country. Push for the entire office to work at home today, cancel birthday parties, and other gatherings, stay home as much as you can. If you have a fever, any fever, stay home. Push for school closures, now. Anything you can do to stop the spread, because it is spreading in your communities there is a two week incubation period and if you do these things now you can buy your medical system time.

And for those who say it is not possible to close the schools, and do all these other things, locking down Italy was beyond anyone's imagination a week ago.

Soon you will not have a choice, so do what you can now.

Please share."

I don't disagree with many of the posters here, however, it seems like there are several (you know who you are) who consistently post 'this doesn't look good' twitter links.

I will agree that things are not looking good for containing this virus, most people are looking for legit ways to prevent the spread and not 'holy *****... 'insert twitter post here' this is definitely not good".

Twitter will be the downfall of modern civilization... This is pretty sad coming from a guy who is only 31.

Italy is socialized healthcare. I don't know if they are cleaner than Greece, but I know for a fact that Doctors smoke while treating you in Greece.

Can't imagine how Italy cannot comprehend this thing.
