Amazon should have done an economic analysis long before they decided to pick the location. They shouldn't have gotten past first glance, if that were the case.
Political considerations (ironically) nudged Amazon to pick political power centers of NY and Virginia.
From a business perspective, those are horrible places to locate. You have to pay your people significantly more for the same standard of living as even an affluent center like Dallas.
When the politicians in NYC stop kissing their ace, amazon rightly told them to shove it. It only made sense if they were on board with them to make it easier to do business.
We all
THOUGHT it was going to be a business decision. We realized it was a political decision, based on the selections.
Based on them pulling out, it was either a dumb selection, or they've over-estimated their growth and are down-sizing the expansion and this is just an excuse. Maybe they decided to downsize and so, they split the number, in order to negotiate each against the other, and move forward with the better site, and blow up the relationship.
Doubt all that... I think it blew up (cost and politics) and they just scrapped it and it was just a terrible decision to begin with.
I think the stat I saw was that Amazon owns 20% of all downtown Seattle. That will be fun to watch... to see their implementation of Socialism. At some point, they have to help the homeless... amirite?!
Time will tell.
