It is amazing that there are people defending this tweet by Trump.
Present the facts.
The tweer doesn't say or imply "present the facts". It implies that the only way a story such as hers is credible is if a police report was filed when it happens. Talk to a forensic nurse who deals with assault, they'll tell you this tweet is b.s.
"I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!"
Thanks for making my point. Bring forward the 36 year old filings that are the only way anyone will believe you.
I get where you're coming from Michael. I really do. But, here's the thing. Nothing about this particular accusation is credible. It doesn't deserve to be treated as credible. In fact, pretending this is credible does further damage to women who hope to be believed when they wait to accuse their abuser as it is human nature to lump things together...Oh, there's another Dr. Ford accusation.
Well said. What I'm trying to convey is that Trump could have accomplished the goal without calling her a liar (e.g. "The Democrats are withholding Ms Ford's letter and refusing to provide any details that would allow a reasonable investigation of her claims. The only third party she identified says it didn't happen. There just aren't enough facts to delay the confirmation any further.")
Or, he could've kept his mouth shut.
Here's the harm...other women will read Trump's text and think,. I didn't file a police report so my abuse doesn't count. They shouldn't think that way, but they will.
But they won't look at the dems using sexual assault as a political hail mary and not think anything of it?
I don't think it's the same. What the Dems are doing is Ford specific--she's participating, agreeing. the tweet embodies a principal--no police report, then it didn't happen. For someone wrestling with shame, such a message amplifies that shame (well, you screwed that up).
That's one reason specially trained medical professionals are needed for assault victims. To help them with those early decisions in a way that doesn't add shame (more shame) to an already traumatic event.
I believe it is the same. It's the Boy Who Cried Wolf theory. After a while, people just become numb to a sexual assault claim because of it's overuse to harm a political opponent, which hurts real victims and further silences their voices.
Ask yourself a few questions:
1. Do you believe the assault really happened?
2. Considering the timing of the allegation coupled with the lack of evidence and absurd demands to testify, can you see how many see this as nothing more than a political move and that nothing happened?
3. How do you think women/men who have been sexually assaulted/raped who see this as nothing more than a political move feel about having a life changing experience they didn't ask for used as a political tool?
