Remember the whole series, as Chase has stated before more than once, is about Tony and his two "families."

We got our answer to questions about each of the four members. The show was about them. Now Chase wants us out. This is one reason why it's a great series.

Is David Chase scheduled to be on any TV soon? I think most of the TV viewing country would like to hear what he has to say.

Don't know, but he's on the Star-Ledger's blogger's chat tomorrow. Should be interesting.

From the Today show to Nightly News to Jim Rome, to The NBA Finals press conference, to USA TODAY, to Sportscenter, to The View...everyone is talking about the end, or the ending.
I watched it again today. I watched the final 4 minutes (the entire Journey song) and the 10 seconds of silence before the credits rolled, and had to laugh. I thought about how initially disappointed I was, but then figured I would have been disappointed if Tony was wacked, arrested, left alone, or any of the above. Chase has set up a bigger cultural question than "Who Shot JR?" ..."What happened after Meadow walked in?" Brilliant!

Here's one ending I would have like to see...Meadow walks in and shoots the hitman ( Tony would have given her a small gun at their dinner together, explaining he was worried about the Coco incident) before Tony is shot, saving her family's life, and thus becoming a female Michael Corleone...first despising her family's lifestyle, then embracing it.

I would have liked to have seen Meadow show up at my house naked.

"The lack of resolution -- the absolute and deliberate failure, or more accurately, refusal, to end this thing -- was exactly right. It felt more violent, more disturbing, more unfair than even the most savage murders Chase has depicted over the course of six seasons, because the victim was us. He ended the series by whacking the viewer."

Tony's not dead.

Another problem with a movie is that so many characters died in the last season. Chase said he has considered "going back to a day in 2006 that you didn't see, but then (Tony's children) would be older than they were then and you would know that Tony doesn't get killed. It's got problems."

I don't think it means what you're reading into it.

I think he's saying that you would know a definitive outcome (in that case-Tony is alive), which he doesn't want to do.

Here is the interview with David Chase. He talks about how he likely will not do a movie. I hope there is no movie. It will cheapen the series-ending scene of any of its ambiguity/intrigue.

BTW- When seeing Tony eating the orange, I also thought he was going to get whacked. Also, Phil was wearing white shoes when he got shot/run over.

After all the speculation Agent Harris might turn Tony, instead we saw Harris had turned, passing along info on Phil's whereabouts and cheering, "We're going to win this thing!" when learning of Phil's demise.

"This is based on an actual case of an FBI agent who got a little bit too partisan and excited during the Colombo wars of the'70s," Chase says of the story of Lindley DeVecchio, who supplied Harris' line.

one of my favorite parts of the episode...this did seem a lil out of character until we find out its based on a real person.

i like the idea of going back to a day in 2006 and doing a movie. however, this can probably only be done in the next year or two to remain realistic.

Ah, you know that he wouldn't die in the movie. Duh. Oh well..

Between the two halves of season 6, I stopped having HBO (and my girlfriend at the time kept deleting them off of her Tivo), so I finally just finished Season 6 this weekend.

Wow.

And going back and reading this thread for the first time, its hilarious how confident so many people are (especially Redstone) about what is going to have. Not "I think..." but "I know this..."

However he did have one the best posts on this therad.

quote:
This was a good episode. Closure all around.

Tony’s therapy has in fact ended successfully from his point of view (or as badly as Melfi came to fear): his un-self-aware, sociopathic self, has been validated.

There is also closure in the completeness of Tony’s corruption of Carmella and the kids. There was always some doubt about Carm’s complicity in the mafia life (e.g. her complete naivety regarding Adrianna’s fate); by the end there is no doubt that she knows exactly what Tony is and that she is along for the ride.

The screwed-up, suicidal, angst-ridden AJ is bought off with a BMW, some nookie with an underage fashion model, and an apprenticeship with Little Carmine. So much for his worries about how screwed-up the world is.

And even talented, idealistic Meadow has found herself: she’ll marry a mobster’s kid, and pursue a big money career as a mob defense lawyer. Even better, she has acquired Tony’s capacity for blind self-justification: she’s really doing it all in the name of civil rights.

The narrative may have broken off, but the psychological journey of the characters has been completed – what more do you really need to know about any of them?

AgCanuck also pretty much nailed the ending on Page 7.

quote:

I'm sticking with a "life goes on" type ending. I don't think the Feds finally get Tony, I don't think Phil is going to whack Tony, Tony's not going to flip.

Thoughout the entire 6B season, Tony has alienated and hurt firends/family. I think the show ends with Tony still in "power" but being very alone (and maybe a little paranoid about his future as boss). I've wondered if Carm would leave Tony at the end of the show, but she needs him way too much.

I do think Melfi will end Tony's therapy with her. Her therapist's comments may have solidified something she knew deep down. Both Tony and her have questioned the usefullness of their therapy sessions in 6B.

Oh and I don't think the ducks come back. Tony had the asbestos dumped in their pond (you can hear ducks in the background when the asbestos was being dumped). Tony's right- "everything he touches turns to ****".

I'm really glad despite all of the clamoring on this thread and the rest of the internet, that they didn't make a movie. What could 2 more hours do that they couldn't do in 87 episodes. And unlike Sex and the City (which didn't make for too bad of a movie) with the subject matter being so much heavier, it would have cheapened the whole show to go back for a money grab.

Man, I am way late to this party. But, then again, I'm late to all the best tv series. I watched "The Wire" for the first time just a few years ago. Same with "Breaking Bad". I actually watched the first three or four seasons of "The Sopranos" last year and then just stopped one day. Decided a few week ago to binge the last of it. For a show that is often talked about in GOAT television conversations, I don't think it was that great. Entertaining? Yes. Great? Not really.

Also, Tony was killed in that final scene.

It proved that a high production value , r rated, shorter season drama is commercially viable. It set the standard that everyone uses today, however the show was hit and miss, but had some good acting.

Finally binged this show. What happened at the end of the finale? Hulu blipped out and the stream went down right before Meadow walked through the restaurant door.

Finally watched the Sopranos. Amazing, especially the overlapping impact it had on tv to inspire such shows as Mad Men, The Shield, Breaking Bad and others. Quite a legacy. Really fun reading the thread mentioning DVD collections and so forth, seeing how much things changed since the show debuted
