there are 6 books not counting the slew of books written by Frank Herbert's less-gifted son. The first two movies are based on the first book, while this new movie will largely derive from the second book, with possibly some elements coming from the third book

I know the 70s were brought up earlier, and having grown up with all the boomer references to those films. I feel most were overrated once I finally got around to watching them. One liners being repeated from all those films, were not at all what I expected.

Smoky and The Bandit and Rocky are probably the only two films that hold up and have consistent replay value. The Godfather and Apocalypse Now are masterpieces, but I don't watch them when they're on like the other two.

I'm right there with 70's movies, and it's not simply the pacing. The Godfather is in my top 3 movies of all time and is one I can watch any day, if I come across it.

But every time I seem to sit down to watch a movie from the 70's, it just never quite gels with me.

The pacing on movies in the 70's was much, much slower. Wasn't until Raiders of the Lost Ark IMO that modern pacing began, something happening like every 10-15 minutes. I can see where folks wouldn't like it. You have to put the phone away & dial into a movie like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Jeremiah Johnson, The French Connection, The Sting, etc. (At least I do) Great movies, just much different than folks born in the 80s & beyond are used to.

I don't mind slow pacing. Chinatown absolutely lived up to its hype imo. I wouldn't consider that film as overrated, but I see why some do. There are other films like The Warriors, American Graffiti, and Alien I cant ignore.

It was "New Hollywod", and I know it was the era when films were moving on from the peachy rose glasses cinema was presenting. But Saturday Night Fever? It was nothing like what was presented to me as a kid from all the cultural refrences. Once I saw it as an adult, it wasn't a shiny dance movie starring John Travolta. It wasn't that good to me.

Alien, Star Wars, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Smoky and the Bandit are my favorites from that decade. But there are lots of movies from the 70s that I consider to be classics - The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Conversation, Patton, Tora! Tora! Tora!, American Graffiti, Dirty Harry, Animal House, Halloween, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Every Which Way But Loose, Escape From Alcatraz, Superman: The Movie, Midway, Capricorn One, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and 1941.

The first movie was a little slow, I'll give you that. It's a setup for the second movie, which was awesome.

I found Oppenheimer to be very uneven. The stuff leading up to the actual explosion of the bomb was great. The scenes involving the security hearing I found to be very boring.

I watched the second this weekend and I agree, it's much better.

Titanic - who wants to contract a menstrual cycle?

Cast Away - Good premise but absolutely terrible ending. At least get some poon from the chick who's delivery package you've been holding onto for all these years. I'm pretty sure the package had a satellite phone in it.

American Beauty - Mena Suvari, the prude from American Pie is naked? I'll give it a watch. Fast forward to now & Kevin Spacey really is a total creep.

Saw this one in the theater when it came out with my then girlfriend. Our first movie date. It was many years ago and maybe my taste in movies was somewhat immature. But my taste in movies evidently was VERY different than her's. My girlfriend turned to me at the conclusion in breathless amazement and gushed at how great the 'film' was. I did not experience that emotional climax, not even close, and just said, 'it was okay'.

She was angry with me the rest of the night. Yes, we did not last long. Have never had the desire to revisit that movie. (And has nothing to do with Kevin S.)
