Man I loved Momento. But the storytelling was straight forward and easier to follow. O well.

The first time I saw Napoleon Dynamite, I thought it was the stupidest thing ever, but then liked it a lot more after watching it again.

To the guy that doesn't like SpaceBalls. Get help. Do you like any Mel Brooks, or just hate comedy in general.

Napoleon Dynamite, another movie I don't like. Just don't think it's funny.

If you can't laugh at the whole character of Uncle Rico, I think there is something wrong with you.

That was Zoolander for me. The first time I watched it on a deployment, it was the dumbest movie I had ever seen and totally unfunny...by the 16th or 17th time it was played during the deployment it was hilarious.

Add another to that boat. Never understood the love for this movie. Came out the beginning of my senior year of high school and everyone was quoting it.

I could (and have) watched MD and PF 50 times each I bet. The others maybe a dozen.

Can you explain the plot of Mulholland Drive?

I love Mulholland Drive, I had to watch it about three times to really get it and appreciate it, but it's up there with my favorites now.

lol. Somewhat yes.

Basically the first 2/3 is a dream scenario of a failed hollywood actress who imagines herself as the ingenue Betty and her never seen lover Camilla as the beauty Rita.

The scenes where she comes to LA, blows away the producer on a tryout and envisions secret plots going on on set are just a fantasy scenario in her head. Lots of weird scenarios too like the Cowboy and the dinner party in the hills (up Mulholland Dr) all have an element of sinister forces working against her to derail her career.

At the dinner she sees Rita kissing Camilla and in a jealous rage she hires a hit man who will leave a mysterious blue key as confirmation when it is done.

She is actually Diane as we find out on the last 1/3 and living alone after her roommate/lover Camilla moved out. And she finds the real world blue key that confirms it is done. She had her killed. Racked with guilt and paranoia, after a violent masturbatory scene, she falls into a series of wild hallucinations and a psychotic episode. Unable to live with her failures and the guilt of what she has done she kills herself on the bed.

So most of that is out of sequence and told in flashbacks etc in the fractured dream. But the gritty real world at the end is the actual story - we only see the culmination of it but clues about what is real that worked its way into her dream.

Some parts are a little inexplicable - but its just parts of a dream that don't always make sense.

Lynch filmed the first 2/3 as a pilot for a TV series that was never picked up and would have had a much longer play out as a TV series and not wrap up so quickly. Like his TV series Twin Peaks it would have had some long arcing mystery and other odd characters and side plots most likely that just serve to distract. But then he decided to repurpose it as a movie and the final 1/3 was shot to wrap it up.

Yep. 3-5 viewings to start to really get it.

I had a film loving group of friends at the time and we basically all dove deep into that one and discussed ad nauseam after repeated viewings over a year or so.

It helped to have some people to talk to about it. First viewing I was totally lost as well.

Same.
Saw it in med school with one of my favorite med school buddies who went into psychiatry--her back ground in psychology really helped.

Agreed and I hate to say that.

It was large scale spectacle. And while the story is known (and dry) the acting left me flat and some of the casting was a miss imo

Damon was fine
Hathaway was good maybe the best actor/actress
Leguizamo was very good too
Holland was ok but I did not feel he was a great choice for the role
Pattinson same, a juicy character that did nothing for me
Zendaya was meh
Charlize was good but very limited role
Page pfffff

For a more recent film, I'd say Elvis. I just didn't think Austin Butler was convincing as Elvis and too many parts of the film looked distractingly animated.

Forrest Gump sucked. Agreed,

there are 6 books not counting the slew of books written by Frank Herbert's less-gifted son. The first two movies are based on the first book, while this new movie will largely derive from the second book, with possibly some elements coming from the third book

I don't like the Dune movie.
I didn't like it enough to watch the Dune second movie.
I probably won't watch the Dune third movie.
Also, I never watched the original Dune movie that came out 20-30 years ago.
I think it's gross that they eat and drink their bodies' wastes.
I'm not a huge Zen or Tim fan either.
I read the Dune book and thought it was just ok. If there's others, I might try and read them.

If you thought Dune (the book) was just ok, then don't bother reading the others. That's the best one by far.

Saturday Night Fever, was a lot darker than I ever expected. Deliverance, One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest, Midnight Cowboy, and The French Connection. All overrated to me.

I know the 70s were brought up earlier, and having grown up with all the boomer references to those films. I feel most were overrated once I finally got around to watching them. One liners being repeated from all those films, were not at all what I expected.

Smoky and The Bandit and Rocky are probably the only two films that hold up and have consistent replay value. The Godfather and Apocalypse Now are masterpieces, but I don't watch them when they're on like the other two.
