A few days ago, I finished People of the Dark by Robert E. Howard (The Robert E. Howard Omnibus: 99 Collected Stories (Halcyon Classics)). If you have never read any of his works, this book is a good starting point. It has lots of Conan stories, quite a few of them from the Crusades era with Christian knights battling the Muslims for control of the Middle East, a line of stories about a boxing sailors, and some mystical stories.

This morning I finished The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien, which is a reread for me. On to The Return of the King to finish the plot line.

I'm only half way through it but going to put out a plug for Five Decembers by James Kestrel. Definitely a very good and interesting read. Crime Story about a detective in Honolulu at the time of Pearl Harbor attack. Very Joe Friday type writing done well.

Believe it or not, I actually have enjoyed the knockoff so far. We'll see if he finishes it. It isn't verbatim but it is close enough that you have to wonder how he got away with publishing it.

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick
Murder at the ABA by Isaac Asimov
Blacktail by Scott Hawkins in-progress

Murder at the ABA was okay. It was short and made me laugh a few times. I also like the Asimov was a character within the story.

Now onto Blacktail which just released today. It's the second book from Scott Hawkins. Although I've only read it once and was a bit lost at first, I remember really liking his first book (The Library at Mount Char) by the end of it. May reread it after this one depending on what else I have up next. Wanting to dip back into a bit more sci-fi to finish out the year.

Just finished Dune Messiah. Very fast read. Wanted to read prior to seeing the movie.

Next will be Royal Assassin as soon as it's available from the library.

I've dived back into Sun Eater. Started Demon in White last night (#3) last night.

Side note: Kindle is now doing recaps of previous book in a series. I appreciate that.

Reading a non-fiction book right now about Los Angeles homicide detectives. I expect I'll finish it, but the author's unironic reference to "mega-rounds from AK-47s" had me shaking my head a bit.

In context, I think the author was trying to make clear that the bullet holes from AKs were larger than those from handguns but wanted to express it in a sensational (and nonsensical) manner.

Finished Everything's Eventual by Stephen King. It's a collection of short stories and most are very well written. I also finished my 5th or 6th time through Bram Stoker's Dracula. This was my first time with the Audiobook version. It's such a great story. Love the characters and the settings. The dread that hangs over you the whole book. Quincy P. Morris is a bad ass Texan! I love the quote (Stoker in the late 1800's) saying if America keeps producing men like Quincy they will surely be a power in the future.

Please let us know your thoughts on book 3. I stopped after book 2 because the main character generated no feelings from me. I didn't like him, nor did I dislike him; he just was the narrator of the story. Many of the contributors to these threads have recommended it, and said the series picks up in book 3, but I'm not sold on it yet.

Also, that new feature on Kindle is great. I noticed it in a couple of books recently was impressed with not having to look up a synopsis somewhere online. You never know when someone will post spoilers in a recap.

A Passage to India by E.M. Forster.

It's a good book, clearly earned a spot on classics reading list.

Takes place in India prior to independence. The dynamics between colonial English and Indians is great. Same with Christian/Hindu/Muslim differences. Beautifully written. It's not a thriller, but there's a good plot.

It drags at times. If you aren't in right frame of mind for this book, it will be a slog.

Finally finished the original Red Rising trilogy. I'm not a huge sci-if reader, but it's definitely a good story with a complete arc, interesting characters, and some great unexpected turning points throughout. Highly recommend.

My only criticisms are that it starts very slowly, the writing style is fairly dry (all first person), and it ends with a cheap eye-rolling plot device.

Yeah, I enjoyed the first Red Rising trilogy and would give it an overall recommend, but I was also ready to be done when the first trilogy wrapped. Never inclined to start the 2nd set.

2nd Red Rising trilogy is a big improvement over the first IMO.

I would recommend that over Suneater series

IMO 2nd red rising trilogy grows up with its characters. Has much more weight . I enjoyed it more than the first trilogy. I am biased admittedly as it's one of my favorite series.
