Wrapped up a reread of Dungeon Crawler Carl from B1 to culminating in B8. So begins the wait for B9.

Not sure what I am going to pick up next honestly. I have a ton of series that I need to commit to and just finish.

Maybe I'll let yall pick for me. Narrowed it down to three.

- The Black Company by Glen Cook
- Sun Eater by Chris Ruccio(sp?)
- The Half a King series by Abercrombie. Can't recall actual series name off top of head.

I have read the first book of each one at some point or another. Really enjoyed each one but figure I'd have to restart all over for all of them to finish them out. Which one should I tackle first?

Haven't read that particular Abercrombie series but am currently on book 6 of Sun Eater and it's been pretty good, although I have heard that book 7 doesn't quite nail the landing. Guess I'll find out shortly!

I have also read the Black Company series and enjoyed it, but I think perhaps both series may suffer from being a little too drawn out. I'd recommend either, but just note that both have some times where they really bog down and it can be a struggle to fight through and finish. It does help to splice in a one-off unrelated book in between just to give yourself a little reset. I think Black Company has a little more humor mixed in throughout the series but it's been a few years since I read it

Have any of you tried "The Bound and the Broken" series by Ryan Cahill? One of the books was on sale on Audible and seemed interesting. Of course the book that is on sale is the latest release (book 4).


Also just a recommendation that I've not seen on here (it came to mind when someone mentioned the Baldur's gate book). I listened to the audiobook series The Witcher a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I definitely recommend the series, especially if you played/enjoyed the video game. And it's way better than the Netflix series.

I couldn't understand why fans of the Witcher graphic novels were so down on the Netflix series until I watched the making of the prequel, and realized these people took a world created by someone else, and used it to tell the story THEY wanted to tell, regardless of the original content. It's honestly insulting to the author and especially the fans.

They really did do a terrible job with it and screwed the pooch big time with the series. Especially not listen to Cavill, or really following anything at all pertaining to the original story.

Agreed, would've loved for HBO to have won the rights to make the adaptation for TV. Netflix and Hissrich completely **** the bed

I am definitely biased, but I love The Black Company, and really most anything by Glen Cook. His writing style is not traditional fantasy and is not for everyone, but I get a kick out of it. I also really like his Garrett, P.I. series, which is a fantasy pastiche of the hard-boiled detective genre.

I also have a soft spot for the Instrumentalities of the Night series, which is a fantasy version of ~13th century Europe. It apparently did not do well commercially, and the fourth book ended very abruptly.

It takes awhile. But like I said half way through once your more suited to it and the story its actually absolutely masterful (prose). Man is a literary genius with this one.

Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Not really a fan of Tyson, but this was a pretty good brief overview of astrophysics. I never studied physics beyond high school, but I wanted to learn a little more about the topic since it interests me, and I was able to understand most of this book.

Do y'all have any recs on Texas History?

It's oral histories from 1900 on, but I've heard rave reviews on this book.

Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky (physical book - first time reading this classic). After finishing up "Devils" by Dostoevsky earlier this year and needing a break from him, I'm ready for more.

On deck: Mark, an Expositional Commentary by RC Sproul

Well, last night I finished DCC book 8, A Parade of Horribles by Matt Diniman. As stated on the Dungeon Crawler Carl thread, parts of the writing in the latter stages of this book are some of the funniest prose I've read in some time, perhaps as far back as the first time I read Lonesome Dove.

With DCC finished, I started a new Kindle book named Lions of Medina: The True Story of the Marines of Charlie 1/1 in Vietnam, 11-12 October 1967, by Doyle Glass.

Just finished "Judgment of the Nephilim" by Ryan Pitterson

Fascinating book.

Started Primal Hunter last night, it's aight. I'm not the biggest fan of its use of 3rd person, and the author could give 2 ****s about world building or showing any kind of real reaction from the characters, but it is fairly mindless fun

Finished Red Storm Rising last night based on recommendations here.

Took awhile to get into, but I ended up loving it. I did feel like the ending was a bit abrupt in the Soviet side, but all in all a great read.

I have about 200 pages left in my re-read of Red Storm Rising.

I wouldn't mind this either, but I don't see any way Lara survives much longer. First, in a series where the nature of relationships is foundational and telling, none of Harry's romantic and semi-romantic relationships has ended well for the ladies. Lara has enemies galore and an underlying issue that I don't think Harry can let slide.

The White Court's Hunger is from an Outsider "Infection." Now, maybe Harry goes all Red Court (also Outsider via Drakul) but this time figures out how to remove the Outsider influnce from the White Court in one fell swoop without killing them all, perhaps with the help of other Starborn like the aforementioned founder of the Red Court and maybe with the guidance but not participation of Mac, who seems pretty clearly be a very old and very powerful fallen Angel. But would Lara want that? Would Thomas? Would House Malvora and/or House Skavis?

And most of all, what would Mab think about that? She's looking for reliable allies for the coming conflict and seems to prefer the White Court led by Lara as a vassal/ally. But tangentally I think there are only 2 people that Harry would go scorched-earth over (Maggie and Thomas) and if Lara was collateral damage, then so be it.

So much happened in Out Law that It's probably time for a reread already. Mirror Mirror was 33% done when Butcher spoke in Houston a couple of months ago, so it won't be long.

Completed: The Little Sister by Raymond Chandler. You guessed it, another Marlowe novel. I liked this one quite a lot, moreso than The Lady in the Lake. Good twists and some wonderfully awful characters. Plus, it feels like he got a bit more back in the swing of things with the level of his prose.
