Book: Material World: The Six Raw Materials That Shape Modern Civilization (2025)

Summary (3*): No matter how far our society and our economies advance, a relatively few raw materials are still the most basic building blocks of everything. And by this, I mean EVERYTHING. This book lays out the discovery, usage, mining, and refining of six of the most important materials that many people don't think about at all, but that provide the foundation of survival for all of us on the planet. Sand, salt, iron, copper, oil, and lithium.
Thesis (4*): The evolution of technology has allowed a lot of people to forget how a physical thing is built, and even something that appears completely unburdened by the most basic of ores or products dug out of the ground has a hard and fast reliance on the availability. Something as ephemeral as a website needs a huge stack of actual, real things to be a reality storage media, communications, processors, glass, batteries and each of these are built on top of a relatively few key materials, and the journey upstream from that website to the copper mines in Chile and the salt slurries in the Netherlands is worth understanding at some level for everyone.
The book takes some liberties on *why* knowing this is important that I don't necessarily agree with (the author, who is British, has pretty much accepted as fact that Net Zero Carbon is the most important thing on the planet), but regardless of the reader's view on that, the book's full of information that most readers will at least find interesting, and perhaps make them revisit some opinions and conclusions with a better understanding of the implications.
Evidence (4*): Solely on the basis of helping average readers understand where all these supply chains ultimately lead back to, Conway did a great job at a 30,000 feet level. Imagine this book as a pretty sharp journalist describing engineering processes to a group of pretty sharp Liberal Arts majors, and that's the tone and depth getting the basic idea across in an entertaining way.
One thing I appreciated was his honest approach to the paradox of "green energy" that switching to renewable energy sources will require a pretty massive and sustained increase in these "environmentally unfriendly" mines, wells, and refining processes for the foreseeable future. Even though I don't agree with his basic premise (that we have to get to Net Zero), I do appreciate his acknowledgement of some of the true costs of the effort.
Readability and Re-readability (3*): Mixed bag. The stories and language are good and memorable, but the point of the book is that these are very long-term processes and constraints that really won't change over long periods of time. I just can't imagine coming back to this book much in the future, because I don't think the facts or conclusion are going to change much during my lifetime.
Persuasiveness (5*): It succeeded admirably in what I think it set out to do, which was to illustrate the linkages between the most basic of source materials to the most advanced products and services that we all consume today. Pretty hard to push back on that, really.
Who It's For: This is a good book for people that hear about "supply chains" all the time but don't really have a good sense of where they begin. Similarly, it's a good read if you're an investor in stocks, but want to begin understanding what your companies rely on in the way of raw materials and processing and how those commodity values drive the viability of the downstream business.

Material World overlaps significantly with another book,
How The World Really Works by Vaclav Smil, that I think is a better, deeper read than this one. Smil lays out his Four Pillars of Civilization (Ammonia, Steel, Concrete, Plastics), and uses data to show just how integral those are to society at large. For me, anyways, Smil was a more robust study of raw material dependency than this one, while
Material World had more entertaining stories of the discovery, mining, and refinement of those minerals. Both are good, but for me, Smil's book is better.
