Children of Dune finished just now.

My reading history with this series came to a halt when I first read Dune Messiah back in 1986, finding that book to be a bore with no action and an ending for Paul Atreides that didn't sit well with me. Still, I had a love for Dune, which I re-read prior to the release of Denis Villenueve's two-part movie series. When it was announced that a third movie would be made based upon the sequel novel, I re-read that book. Much older now, I believe I understood better what Herbert was saying with the events of that book, so much so that I will say I enjoyed reading it. And that prompted me to finish Herbert's series (I will not likely read anything beyond Chapterhouse: Dune).

Children of Dune was a much more approachable story for this first read than was Dune Messiah. Some of it was predictable, such as the true identity of the Preacher, while overall it was just compelling reading. As a slow reader over the last 20 years or so, I read this 600+ page book in about three weeks, which is closer to the speed at which I read in my younger years. I found the story of the twins to be the most fascinating part of the story, but also their interaction with their grandmother Jessica and their Aunt, Alia. I am most curious to see where Herbert takes the story of Leto II's evolution beyond human in the next novel.

Up next, God Emperor of Dune.

I just finished Fahrenheit-182: A Memoir by Mark Hoppus.

I actually really enjoyed the book. It helped that Blink was one of the first bands that really got me to seek out different genres of music. I think it was interesting to see he and the band's origin story as well as some of the inspiration behind their music. It also does a good job explaining their break up and eventual reunion.

A great read for any of the young Gen X/Millennials out there.

CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

Finished: The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien - unsurprisingly, I loved it. Framed more as a collection of myths and legends than the narrative style of the Lord of the Rings, but still just great.

In progress: We Pointed Them North by Edward "Teddy Blue" Abbott. Memoirs of a cowpuncher in the late 19th century. Written in a very conversational tone, and even just a quarter of the way in, I'm almost certain that McMurtry put at least a little bit of Teddy Blue into his characters in Lonesome Dove. Some choice quotes:
  • "All I ever seen in that country, except sagebrush, was Mexicans and goats, and I never did have a high opinion of Mexicans."
  • "You always want to shoot 'em in the right eye because that disturbs their aim."
  • "Cowboys don't carry box lunches."
  • "My father was all for farming by that time, and all my brothers turned out farmers except one, and he ended up the worst of the lot--a sheepman and a Republican."

Tuesday night I finished When the Moon Hits Your Eye, by John Scalzi. It's a weird premise, so it's a weird read. Some chapters were outstanding and others not so much. Without any spoilers, for some unknown reason, the moon suddenly turns to "cheese". It affects everyone differently, including astronauts training for a moon landing. It isn't one of his best, to me.
That same night I started Shattered Sword, based on the recommendations from this thread. It's a very good read so far, but progress isn't great, yet. There are too many other things going on right now.

Obligatory "Username Fits"

Just finished Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential".
It's a little dated, but only confirmed what I already knew: I would never, ever want to work in the restaurant biz.

I managed a kitchen at a fairly well known chain in Texas for 3 years. It's the most stressful job I've ever had and would never go back. If servers say their job is hard, they haven't worked any other role in a restaurant. It's probably the easiest role in a restaurant by far.

The GM of the restaurant I was at had to stop working in the kitchen after his 2nd heart attack. It's ridiculous.

Finished Nash Falls by David Baldacci. Enjoyed it. Not his best work and feel like it took some lazy plot leaps. But it was engaging and got better as it went. I am looking forward to the second one.

Started King Sorrow.

On the audio side, taking a nostalgic audio stroll through an old favorite of mine - Magician series by Raymond Feist. Will probably go through the first 6 or so of the universe. After that they get less engaging to me. Also started Suneater #4. Having a little trouble getting into it, hence the break to Feist.

Anyone else get into phases where they have trouble engaging stories? Feel like I am in one. Nothing I start is really grabbing me right now.

Finished: We Pointed Them North by Edward "Teddy Blue" Abbott. That didn't take long - great, quick-reading memoir of a 19th century cowpuncher. Can't recommend highly enough.

In progress: The Code by Margaret O'Mara, a history of Silicon Valley.

Ended up reading chapter 1 of The Will of the Many 3-4 different times over a few months before I could get to chapter 2 last fall.

Occasionally I'll also have to read a chapter or three before I can recognize the words being said in an audiobook.

Usually end up having to either switch settings, tones, genres, fall back to a comfort reread or just put the books down altogether for a bit.

I tend to read mostly nonfiction. So I tend to read multiple books at once. I will have a main book that I'm reading and several others. The main book I read chapters the others several pages to a good break point. I have found this works for me to get through hard to read books.
