So, anyway, finally caught the movie. Loved it. Much different vibe than I expected, but it was really good.

The plot of Arrival is much deeper than that, and her ability to understand the Heptapod language's power to perceive the future is what prevents the Chinese military from attacking them. Your tropey complaint applies a lot better to Stargate, and even then Daniel helps O'Neil nuke Ra in the end anyway. Maybe you were thinking of the Disney Atlantis movie? I'll just say it was fantastic. That is immediately in my top 5 space/alien movies of all time, and was so about 45 minutes in.

Good movie. Really enjoyed it. Gosling did really well, especially the scene where he cries and thanks Rocky. Well done acting. Tear jerker.

A woman really Fs over a guy. He saves the planet and could get any ***** he wants, but decides to go live on another planet with a talking rock.

Loved the book and in the theater. My kids watched it with us last night. They were all glued and invested. Two of them cried at different parts.
Huge risk dying on the way back to a planet that's probably a majority beyond thunder dome status
Disliked the books but found the movie to be solid. My gripe with the book was Rocky just always fixes everything. They streamline that significantly which really helps in that department.
I think the Martian is the better book and movie though.

My wife and I really enjoyed this movie last night. GREAT movie that I will enjoy watching again one of these days when my wife forgets that we have already seen it.

Grace had only enough fuel to get home or get Rocky home. 1 of the 2. He sent the Beatles, and saved Erid and Rocky's race of beings.
This is a part of the movie (and huge in the book) that was hard to miss....and yet.
I doubt they missed it. Just making a surface level joke.
And Grace even leaves the party where people are "hooking up", so the joke kind of lands.

Caught this last night. Kinda weird with the spider rock alien (and how bizarre it was for Grace to decipher the language so quickly) but a really good movie nonetheless!

Honestly don't remember how they handled this in the book but I didn't have this thought at all when reading the book.
When I saw the movie I was thinking the same
Thing as you. So I think it must've been an adaptation issue probably in order to save time.
It definitely was. The book does an excellent job at progressing the translation process. I knew that the movie would have to shorten that and skim over it quite a bit going in.
The translation deal went on for quite a bit in the book. Just took a long time, not just what seemed like an afternoon in the movie.
