The plot of Arrival is much deeper than that, and her ability to understand the Heptapod language's power to perceive the future is what prevents the Chinese military from attacking them. Your tropey complaint applies a lot better to Stargate, and even then Daniel helps O'Neil nuke Ra in the end anyway. Maybe you were thinking of the Disney Atlantis movie? Oh, but wait, linguist Milo winds up saving the Atlanteans by teaching them their old forgotten language and fighting the mercenary Rourke, so it doesn't quite fit your trope narrative either. So which linguist-white-knight-savior movie are you whinging about anyway?

I really wish Cameron would make an Avatar-tech and world building version of Atlantis.

It was a good Disney movie and Cameron visuals for that would be cool.

Just watched it. Was going to check out the conversation, saw a few posts, and went, "nope, I'm out!"

I'll just say it was fantastic. That is immediately in my top 5 space/alien movies of all time, and was so about 45 minutes in.

Good movie. Really enjoyed it. Gosling did really well, especially the scene where he cries and thanks Rocky. Well done acting. Tear jerker.
