Read the book over the weekend and watched the movie last night. Big mistake on my part to do the two so close together. I didn't particularly enjoy the film and spent the whole movie comparing it to the book in my head.
I really enjoyed the book. I am a science guy, so I enjoyed the science part in the book. It was a little deep at times, but necessary. I don't think the movie did enough of this. They just showed him a couple times at a whiteboard doing calcs. Ok, I get it, but I liked the Matt Damon line in The Martian, 'I'm gonna have to science the **** out of this' and would have liked to see that aspect built up in Grace in the movie.
I thought the movie downplayed Rocky. He was more like Lassie than a Mr. Fixit. They also rushed the bond between them. I understand you can't put 2 hundred pages of bonding into a movie, but they should have done more. When Grace realized Rockys ship was dead in the water, my thought was, damn, sucks to be him, when it should have been heartbreaking, like in the book. Movie really glosses over the selective breeding on the taomeba to be nitrogen resistance. Make it a 4 part series.
Ep 1. Grace into and mission backstory. Ends with meeting Rocky in the tunnel.
Ep 2. Meet Rocky. Develop language and bond between them. Start working on the problem.
Ep 3. Collect Taomeba and all the bad stuff that happened with that. End with Rocky half dead.
Ep 4. Long episode. Finish it all up.
