Read the book over the weekend and watched the movie last night. Big mistake on my part to do the two so close together. I didn't particularly enjoy the film and spent the whole movie comparing it to the book in my head.

I really enjoyed the book. I am a science guy, so I enjoyed the science part in the book. It was a little deep at times, but necessary. I don't think the movie did enough of this. They just showed him a couple times at a whiteboard doing calcs. Ok, I get it, but I liked the Matt Damon line in The Martian, 'I'm gonna have to science the **** out of this' and would have liked to see that aspect built up in Grace in the movie.
I thought the movie downplayed Rocky. He was more like Lassie than a Mr. Fixit. They also rushed the bond between them. I understand you can't put 2 hundred pages of bonding into a movie, but they should have done more. When Grace realized Rockys ship was dead in the water, my thought was, damn, sucks to be him, when it should have been heartbreaking, like in the book. Movie really glosses over the selective breeding on the taomeba to be nitrogen resistance. Make it a 4 part series.

Ep 1. Grace into and mission backstory. Ends with meeting Rocky in the tunnel.
Ep 2. Meet Rocky. Develop language and bond between them. Start working on the problem.
Ep 3. Collect Taomeba and all the bad stuff that happened with that. End with Rocky half dead.
Ep 4. Long episode. Finish it all up.

What a story line.

A woman really Fs over a guy. He saves the planet and could get any ***** he wants, but decides to go live on another planet with a talking rock.

Flawless.

Grace had only enough fuel to get home or get Rocky home. 1 of the 2. He sent the Beatles, and saved Erid and Rocky's race of beings.

This is a part of the movie (and huge in the book) that was hard to miss....and yet.

Wasnt there a line at the end of the movie where rocky told grace that their scientists had his ship ready to take him back to earth, but grace hesitated? So maybe that was hard to miss...

Or maybe i remember wrong?

yeah, in the book they fix his ship but part of him is hesitant b/c he doesn't know if Earth as he knew it is still there. Could be a dangerous and depressing place to return to. Also, Erid's gravity is way stronger than Earth's and its causing rapid aging for him and wrecking his joints. He's worried if he would even survive the trip home. I think by the end of the book, he's been on Erid years. Also, due to time dilation of traveling to Tau Ceti, then Erid, and presumably back to Earth, just about everyone he ever knew would be dead.

Other things from the book: It took a long time to build enough language translations to finally be able to talk science and work the astrophage problem. It also took them several weeks to build the chain they use to go fishing on Adrian. Also, after rocky saves Grace's life, grace returns the favor by picking rocky up and putting him in a xenoite airlock. Rocky's body temperature is so high that Grace gets severe burns on his arms.

Also, they kind of show this in the movie, but don't explain it. Grace is able to find Rocky's ship at the end by spinning the hail mary in a circle, firing his engines (which emits IR light), then quickly turning the engines off and turning on the petrovascope to look for reflected IR light coming off of rocky's ship.

That would have been cool information to know raising the stakes for Grace as he realized how desperate things were getting on Earth. He might not have wanted to be the hero, but when faced with the reality of the planet taking extreme measures to preserve itself, that might have really had an impact on his mindset.

For Grace to know of course they'd have to create some kind of way to communicate, and not being a smart person I'm not sure how they'd do that, but maybe have there just be like a long delay, so he can get messages from earth, but when he gets them they are like 2 years out of date. So he knows what's going on, but he is not able to have an active conversation to guide his work with Rocky.

In the book, paving the Sahara and nuking Antarctica all happen before he leaves Earth

Yes, same with the book. They had plenty of astrophage on Erid, the problem with long voyage home (after dropping off Rocky) was food. The food supplies would be used up and the coma slurry would run out.
The book addresses his health issues his first several months on Erid because of malnutrition. The Eridian scientists eventually were able to grow meat in lab from his cells. He referred to them as "me" burgers.

I guess it's been too long since I read the book. I swear y'all are making half this stuff up.

Last two chapters get into the nitty gritty of what happened to Grace.
