Some sites let you adjust for inflation. Gone with the Wind always wins when you do that

No, they don't. Not in the reporting, at least.

BTW, what's a Chud and why we have, yet again, let someone hijack terminology?

The only legitimate Chud is C.H.U.D. = Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. And if you don't know what that is, then you should be ashamed of yourself.

T-minus 10 hours until I'm finally seeing here it for myself...

Quote:

A chud is a modern slang term used as a general insult to describe an unpleasant, boorish, or unattractive person, often implying they are a social "loser". While it originated as a specific political slur, it has evolved into a broader catch-all term for someone who is uncool or regressive.

Origins and Evolution

The Original Film: The term comes from the 1984 sci-fi horror film C.H.U.D., which stands for "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers," referring to deformed creatures living in the sewers of New York.

Political Slang: Left-wing internet communities popularized the term as an insult for far-right individuals, often characterizing them as stereotypical, basement-dwelling trolls. It is sometimes paired with the "Chudjak" meme (a variant of the Wojak character).

Mainstream Use: The term has since broken out of strictly political discourse. Younger internet cultures and mainstream groups often use it simply as a synonym for "jerk," "fool," or "loser," regardless of the person's political affiliation.

Basically, like, a scummy, trolly, angry, fuddy-duddy loser.

Thanks. Much irony in the evolution of this.

Ha, at least I've had my tickets since July 17, 2025, for that moronic, one-year-in-advance stunt Universal pulled. Way back then, tonight was the earliest I could get. Though, I do prefer Saturdays on opening weekend anyways.

Yeah but it probably doesn't hurt right? It's pretty clear that's why it was done even if there are examples like Oppenheimer that didn't cast a bunch of DEI hires.

The metacritic user score keeps going down. Hmm….

Rotten tomatoes requires proof of ticket purchase so I doubt anything on metacritic

Youtubers who fall on the conservative side of the spectrum have started using it as a badge of honor...as in "Yeah, yeah, we're chuds according to the woke crowd, and we're proud of it."

I'm not downplaying this opening weekend's success, but how much of that box office number is due to the inflated cost of IMAX tickets? In other words, if this was only showing on regular screens, would we be looking at ten to fifteen million less in the box office?

If it was only showing on regular screens, yes, we would be looking at however much less in box office this weekend.

But also, if it wasn't SHOT in IMAX, it would have cost less as well. They had to develop new IMAX camera technology to even pull this thing off, film is a lot more expensive than digital, they shot in / traveled to real, hard-to-get-to locations for IMAX, which is way more expensive than sound stages, etc. In other words, it probably just about evens out in the end.

100+ pages and I still don't understand the argument that you actually have to see a movie before you can have an opinion on it.

Rating a movie before you've seen it is beyond idiotic. It just reflects your biases and your information bubble.

Oh, budgetary-wise I get that. I'm more referring to the spin that studios and commentators put on box office returns. Its having an incredible opening weekend for sure, but the numbers are skewed high because of the cost of an IMAX ticket. I'm not trying to take away from its success, I'm just analyzing it the same way its generally acknowledged that Oppenheimer and Barbie were helped by the Barbenheimer effect or how inflation can be considered when discussing all-time movie box office records.

Its just a shame that Hollywood no longer reports actual tickets sold. THAT would be the true tale of the tape. And perhaps that's why the studios stopped reporting it, since we know they love to spin facts and it'd be a lot harder to spin the actual number of tickets sold.

Regardless, this movie is doing fantastic. The real interesting thing will be to see its legs in regular theaters in the coming weeks. If it has tremendous success in IMAX theaters I hope that spurs the construction of more true IMAX theaters, rather than the LieMAX, etc.

I do agree/wish that actual tickets sold was the standard, as I don't really care how much money giant corporations are making. I mean, I care in the sense that I want the industry to be healthy, but tickets sold would, indeed, be a way more accurate barometer for what most people really care about when making these kinds of "popularity" comparisons.

That said, even if not shot in true IMAX, just about major blockbuster now plays/releases in IMAX, and thus charges the same IMAX ticket prices. In other words, at least in comparing blockbusters to blockbusters, it's more apples to apples.

Yeah, I wouldn't know as I can count the number of movies I've seen over the last 10 years on one hand.
I sure as hell not seen an Academy Awards show in the last 20. But, seeing movie commercials on TV supports her hypothesis.

It's just too hard these days.

I'm on AMC AList. Have no idea how they pay that out. Saw Odyssey Thurs, seeing The Invite today, already saw Obsession this month, and will see Spider Man this month.

No idea how they allocate it.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
This is a great point/question, so I just looked it up and here's what I found...

Quote:

When a subscriber uses a pass like AMC Stubs A-List or the original MoviePass to see a movie, the distributor still receives a standard contractual cut of the ticket price.

Even though the customer's admission is essentially "prepaid" via their monthly subscription, the transaction is internally allocated as an actual ticket sale.

The specific allocation mechanics vary slightly by program:

AMC Stubs A-List: AMC internally records the visit using a baseline or "notional" value (typically between $8.99 and $11.75 depending on the market and year). From this recorded value, AMC pays the movie distributor their agreed-upon percentage, which usually ranges from 40% to 60% depending on the film's release window. The remaining amount is retained by AMC.

Original MoviePass: In its un-subsidized "loss leader" days, MoviePass purchased tickets at full box-office retail price through a prepaid debit card. The theater then allocated the revenue to the distributor according to their standard studio split just like a normal walk-up cash transaction.

Because subscribers tend to see more movies than average, studios often agree to accept this discounted average-rate payout in exchange for the boost in overall ticket sales and attendance numbers.

Yeah, that'd be interesting to know exactly how membership benefits are dealt with on that level. But, I mean, you gotta assume the studios want to know exactly how much revenue each particular movie brings in, so surely AMC already reports to the studios what exact movies members of A-list etc are using their membership on.

The first tweet below sums this all up perfectly. For me, it's not even a political thing. It's an EXTREMIST thing. On BOTH sides. To that end, yes, the second tweet is about MAGA, but the extreme left does the exact same thing / behaves the exact same way.

It's not that I hate right-wingers or anything of the sort. It's that I can't stand *anyone* who devotes so much time and effort trying to steal joy from the rest of us in the name of purity, their ideals, etc. The extreme right demands that the world must meet their purity/ideological standards, while the extreme left demands that the world must meet their purity/ideological standards.

And in the pursuit of that purity, neither of them care how ridiculously overbearing they are, how much they constantly **** on the things the rest of us simply want to be excited for, etc.

To be clear, that doesn't mean the alternative is shutting up and not expressing one's opinion. That's not what anyone is saying. Rather, it's about not being so loud and overwhelming with one's hate and negativity, just chilling the **** out, and not spending months on a message board desperately trying to win some stupid culture war. Opinions can be expressed without also draining joy from everyone in your path.

Just let us like or look forward to something without doing the very same thing you're railing against in movies and TV shows: endlessly preaching.
