For those who haven't seen Rebel Ridge yet on Netflix (which released earlier this month), A) it's really damn good, and B) one of the many reasons it's really damn good is because of lead Aaron Pierre, who gives a star-making performance.

Dude has my vote here for sure.

Oh yeah, absolutely should be him based on his physicality and presence in Rebel Ridge alone.

If I recall correctly, he was in the post-credit scene of Batman v Superman? Or maybe Justice League? Either way, he joined Lex Luther on a yacht for some reason.

No, what I'm thinking of was more than just a post-credit scene. It may be Arrowverse or something like that, I guess. His name is Slade, right?

Honestly, no clue. I know next to nothing about the character, save for the fact that Joe Manganiello was cast to play him (and appeared in that post credit scene), I think as setup for the villain Batman was supposed to face in Affleck's scrapped solo movie.

Google tells me he was in Titans (Esai Morales) so maybe that was it.

Deathstroke = Slade Wilson

Deadpool = Wade Wilson

Deathstroke = Super duper serious

Deadpool = Not so serious

Deathstroke was in Arrow for the first couple of seasons too. He looked a lot like Joe Mangianello. \

This animation reel is insane. It's super short, and not like Pixar or anything, but this is the first time in a long time I've watched something like this and have no idea how they did it. It legit looks photo real but also animated at the same time...

honestly i think DC is overdoing it with way too many projects in development.

and yes, it think marvel still needs to pull back some more.

In terms of live-action, they currently have...

- One movie in post-production (Superman), for release in 2025.

- One series currently shooting (Peacemaker season two), for release in 2025.

- One movie that shoots in January (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow), for release in 2026.

- One series that shoots in January (Lanterns), for release in 2026.

In other words, that's only two movies and two series over the next two years, which doesn't feel like much at all to me. Everything else they're currently developing will be for 2027 and beyond. In fact, I was just thinking how impressive it is that Gunn has stuck to his word so far, they really are taking their time to get things right, not rushing scripts, etc. Never mind the fact that they have crazy impressive talent behind the scenes on all of these projects. IMO, the DCU could not be in better hands, and this feels like the exact right pace to (re)launch the franchise.

To be honest, and this is not saying anything bad about the movies, but i'm actually looking forward to the tv series the most. I love the first season of Peacemaker and based on what I'm seeing of the Lantern series it sounds really cool.

Quote:

Last week, the Hollywood Reporter broke the news that James Hawes (Slow Horses) will direct the first block of episodes on HBO's Lanterns while adding that Aaron Pierreand Stephan James screen-tested for the role of John Stewart opposite Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan.

With the testing process now said to be concluded, I'm hearing that the current frontrunner for the role is, in fact, Stephan James, an actor who I suggested for the role of John Stewart when hardly anyone was discussing him for the plum part.

Now, I'm not saying that James has won the role - just that, if I were a betting man, he's the guy I'd bet on. Aaron Pierre just doesn't look like the kind of guy who needs a mentor like Hal Jordan.

But… let's not forget that when Nicholas Hoult reportedly tested for the role of Superman, it turned out to be a backdoor test for Lex Luthor. Maybe Pierre will wind up playing a villain in Lanterns, or perhaps elsewhere in the DC Universe, whose maestro James Gunn is said to be a big fan of the rising star of Rebel Ridge.

That said, as of Monday night, I'm hearing that Gunn, showrunner Chris Mundy, and his fellow EPs Damon Lindelof and Tom King are leaning heavily towards James, though it's unclear whether a final decision has been made. You know how fluid these things can be.

Personally, I think James is a better fit for the role... and frankly, the better actor right now, though Pierre has greater movie star potential. But James is a magnetic young actor in his own right who played Jesse Owens in Race and starred in Barry Jenkins' adaptation of If Beale Street Could Talk, in addition to the Prime Video series Homecoming, which paired him with Julia Roberts. Next up for James is a supporting turn in Netflix's awards contender The Piano Lesson. That's a hell of a pedigree for a 30-year-old actor.

I even watched James' Quibi series #FreeRayshawn, and stand by what I wrote the other week - he's the kind of actor DC should be looking to be in business with. I'd say that someone at DC heard me, but it sounds like they saw it with their own eyes over the last few days.

DC declined to comment on any casting rumors, with one insider suggesting that any speculation regarding a frontrunner would be premature at this point. Stay tuned…

Gunn just said on Twitter it's Aaron pierre

At some point won't they just let Jon Stewart play John Stewart? He was almost convincing as a real person in "Big Daddy"

I really don't understand this. They want to reboot the DCU, but immediately throw us back into the old one right after the new universe has just started.

Makes zero sense.

Gunn has talked about this before, and I've tried to relay/explain as much as I can, but the gist is basically this...

Season two of Peacemaker takes places exclusively in the new DCU.

That said, a lot but not all of the events of season one, that took place in the DCEU, also took place in the DCU iteration. So, in other words, the broad strokes of season one will be backstory for these "new" versions of the same characters. However, things like the Justice League appearing at the end of season one, and other instances that are highly specific to the DCEU, didn't happen in these characters' history, if that makes sense.

I agree that it will likely be confusing, is not ideal, and that Gunn probably should have killed his baby, so to speak, in favor of a completely fresh start. But season one was so popular and well-liked that they decided to keep the show going and retcon certain events instead.

They should open with a "last season on Peacemaker" where 30% of the recap is stuff that didn't actually happen in S1 but they're retconning it in during the recap.

It makes perfect sense. The DCEU doesn't make money. They are rebooting it. Peacemaker did make money, so they are retconning it in the new DCU.

Possibly in conjunction with the release of the movie in July? Warner Bros/DC is apparently doing a massive Superman marketing push next year.
